it is on topic.
hitting the windows key, which is next to control and alt, will bring up the start menu, unless explorer is in a hung state (which is what causes the start button itself to stop drawing)
the only fix i've found for that is to log out and back in again.

I have the exact same problem Blue.
Although the only time it happens to me, is when i run games windowed. Are you doing this at all?
Its not just a graphic bug either, its almost as if the code has been removed. The button ceases to exist.

it means explorer has shat itself (stuck in some sort of loop, somewhere) most times the entire task bar stops working properly, minimised windows can't be activated from the task bar, the quicklaunch buttons wont work, system tray is useless. either reboot or log out/in. sigh.

Aye i think my computer may be infected just a little by some stuff. But yeah i run CS windowed.
Start bar back now i think it was a one off :P
windows key didnt work to bring it up back then.

I had similar thing - task bar and start button all gone
It was some evil bit of code from a web site ... Spybot fixed it though ..
