Therefore as of Sunday 21st Feb, a committee was elected by voting of members
what members?
Post 3
The majority of previous and current admins/officials who constantly put there free time into making DGA/EVO work where there and invited to start the association.
There were 2 members present, Clackers and Spongebob, who both have been or still are presidents in previous associations within the Northern Territory.
We obviously couldnt invite everyone to the first meeting as the meeting would have gone for hours on end with endless non required questions being asked. Not saying these questions arent relevant at all, however, as stated, we used previous and current admins/officials who thought of this idea and have put it all together to start it.
Hope that answers your question Burk.

Cool.
Will there be an annual membership fee to be a member of DGA?
Post 5
Quote from Sponge:
There will be a general meeting held once a month whereupon all members of the DGA may attend. If you are over 18 years you can officially vote on a general item.
Will this meeting be held on the same dates as DGA events to encourage participation?
Post 6
if there are any changes what will change?
Post 7
Will the monthly meetings be held at the same venue and time, or will it change with every meeting?
Post 8
The monthly meetings will be be held at the same venue and are called general meetings. We will try to hold them at a consistent time but it will depend on the dates of the lan and obviuosly the availablity of those attending.
There will be a yearly membership fee to join the DGA and it wont be expensive or outrageous. This has yet to be finalised by DGA.
Post 9
When you pay your annual membership fee for DGA, it will probably give you a membership card and a rang of discounts to certain things (shops, comp gear etc). That is what we are trying to achieve. This works for both the gamer and the shop so it should work well.
The annual fee will only be small.
The main changes metal will be that where more organised, will eventually own all our gear of top quality, bigger lans, heaps of competetions with great prizes, sponsorship, grants from the govt etc. Lots of good stuff for the gamers.
At the beginning we may have quite a few meetings so that we can get organised. Then it will settle down a bit. We have a lot of work to do so after DGA26, it will get busy for us. Should be fun.

I keep telling you guys: you don't need government grants. You never have. You never will.
You know I'd be disappointed if you took government money. But I'll leave the matter here. No point in my hijacking this thread.
But still. Bah. :P
Post 11
doesnt matter if you need grants from the government.. it's all money.
Post 12
do us soon-to-be members have to wait a year for the AGM, when we can vote in pres, vice pres & other committe members..
i suppose my question is how long does a presidency last? (and in turn other exec & committee positions)

I would actually like to hear this out .. how could we not need govt grants??
Now stayin in a discussion matter lets put this out.
Cisco routers in excess of $60000 and up .. how is that money going to become available to us in a non profit club without having to do other things in other areas??
I think this is a positive move for DGA as it allows for future plans and bigger LAN's
Post 14
This is a question and answer thread El Presidente. A place for constructive questions and to place to maybe get behind something that will assist you as a gamer.
I am basing this on the fact that I have in the past and will in the future assist with the growth of the DGA and the governemt in particular Youth Sport and Rec, very much support organisations such as ours.
Now if all you have for us is negativity and critisism about how we do business I can see no point in disussing this further. Perhaps if you have genuine concerns you will consider perhaps joing the comittee, but I dont belive you will because like many others you dont want to become involved in the politics of associations and hence you would prefer just being able to attend, hook up, pack up and walk away.
Thats fine and is your choice. The thing is some of us want to do more and we are.
Unseen is spot on in what he is saying and its people like him that earn the respect of other people with their positive support. The last thing I want to hear is some comment based on the nothing.
And the comments about never have and never will are only confined within the minds of people who have no vision, lack leadership qualities or stand around with their heads buried in the sand.
Burkyn the positions are for 12 months at which time an AGM is held and a new comittee is voted in. To be eligle to vote you have to be a senior member that is over 18 years of age.
You have to bear in mind though that if you accept a position in the comittee there is alot of work that needs to be done. And Im not saying this lightly at all. All the current members of the comittee are workers and are actively involved in the running of DGA.
It is a position of trust and more importantly you must be able to work as a team. If your interested in a position as a comittee member approach one of us at DGA this week and well talk more.
Now back to the thread...
Post 15
You Seriously Dont need $60000 Worth of Routers. Govt Grants would be nice...but you have never worried about it before. IMHO you should have been an Asso. ever scince Evo 1.
1 Thing i dont like is that the Commitee was "Elected" Before Anyone was even aware that it was happening. the only people that acutally knew, are those that are on the board, and a handfull of others. It just seems a little Biased to me. i suppose there is only that one group of People that can Run it..(seen as they are the ones that have in the past) but it still should have been an offical vote, not Vote the committee before the members even exist.
what will the Perks of being a member? (ie. Reduced rate, Prizes, Special Seating, special lans/meetings)
Post 16
well said spongey.
and i'd just like to ask, how do we go about joining the committee?
Post 17
We need the router so that we can handle the amount of interest that has grown for DGA over the years. At current our network is barely able to handle what we want to do with it.
The perks of becoming a member in the short term will be minimul but long term as more organisations become involved you will be looking at Discounts to a variety of stores, cheap movie tickets etc etc that sort of stuff.
With the current voting in of members this was done with the current DGA officials to get the ball rolling. From this moment all other votes will concern all members.
Post 18
Heretic please dont think it was abiased election.
what youve got to remember is that the comittee was elected before any Constitution or bylaws were written. It wasnt bias but done this way to ensure the DGA lans in their current format would still happen. We now have Public liabillity insurance and the legal ramifications to the DGA for not following the legal avenues was in short damning. Im not going to go into that here but will say that it would only be a matter of time before we were muscled by those in authority. The resut would have been no more DGA lans.
Lets face it those who are currently on the comittee are the ones who are always there setting up and packing up consistently. Its for a period of 12 months and then if you are over 18 and are a member of DGA you can vote who you want.
You really have to be sure here because if you vote in people who are unable to run the club, there will be no lans, comps nothing at all. Hence the reason why it was done this way to ensure all the hard effort was done before hand.
The people in the positions now are doing what they have done since the commencement of DGA years ago. They have shown they can get things done and in all honesty it wasnt done to to upset anyone. We are doing this because we want DGA to survive and allow you as gamers to have a great time and enjoy yourselves. We dont get paid for what we do, we do it because we care and are dedicated in ensuring the transition form a non legal identity to a legal one is smooth.
Also look at the big picture with the other organisations being Gamers underground Etc. They are all linked together and all interconnect in someway.
If you want to be involved in the comittee I am looking for some junior reps to assist with liason between the comittee and the jumior gamers. Interested?
Oh and the perks you mention are some of the things we are looking at plus a few more.
If so see me at DGA

I understand why Liberals don't like the idea of handing out money to non profit community groups - it makes them wake up in a cold sweat.
But how the average gamer could possibly be against a non profit association like DGA getting money to buy better equipment to make YOUR gaming experience better is beyond me....
Post 20
Cool. Thanks man :) i understand what had to happen now. Personally i would have chosen the same people myself, but that is another matter. Yeah sure ill help out with any Representation You need. ill be more than happy to give back something to DGA ;)
Like Kurt Said once we get the ball rolling there are all sort of things you can get into. Making a Permenant DGA Venue, Net Cafe's, Australia wide comps....i mean look at CPL. now a Multi Million dollar Empire, was once a few People having a competition. of course Darwin Is limited somewhat. :(
im also Surprised to see no Recoil and other DGA admins in there.

Post 23
lol. Rec your name was hiding from me i sware it :P
the one person i am thinking about was Mr. CoCo. unless he is hiding too :P
Post 24
Im sure as soon as Mr Coco has finished his busy schedule he will join us as some others like Unseen. Regardless they are people who have earned the respect of the gamers and the current members in the new comittee for their outstanding contributions to DGA and for their continuation of assisting whenever they possibly can.
These people may not be illuminated in the front line but they operate quietly and with efficency in the background. Without their support and assistance the task of putting one of these things together is a little harder.
Food for thought...

If u guys gets grands will DGA buy/rent there own place to set up for perment lans?
Post 34
Quick Question.
Is DGA going to be set up like a club in essence, or is it going to be more like a business.
A club I mean, will it be an organisiation owned and run by all the gamers, or will it be more like a business that provides a venue and equipment for people to attend the dga events.
Just wondering if the gamers that attend the lan events, will be part of the association, ie members, or more like customers/clients
I am just a little confused with the terms, members, junior members, and gamers/junior gamers. Not exactly sure if there is differential between a member and a gamer.
Tho I am sure it will soon become quite clear once the constitution will be releases.
Will there be a draft of the constitution that we can all see before it is submited, therefore having an opportunity to make some input by others that may have some good ideas
I think this is a great idea and a step in the right direction

Any well-run association looks a lot like a business. FWIW DGA has spontaneously evolved to be more business-like, simply to cope with the size of their LANs.
I expect that the constitution will take a fairly standard format: paying members elect an executive committee once per year at the AGM; the executive in turn appoints administrators.
The junior/senior divide sounded like it had something to do with age. I would expect that the idea is to restrict voting rights to persons of a certain age. It might also mean seniority within the organisatiton, so it could be that voting is restricted to persons who have seniority, ie admins or long-time members.
So I expect DGA will be the same as many small-to-medium sports clubs: with a large body of casual members who come along to play, and a small body of volunteers doing a lot of work to make it go.
I'd be very surprised if admins or executives ever received any payment for their efforts, partly because it muddies the non-profit status of the organisation and more simply because I don't think the money is there. We won't know until the first AGM and the first treasurer's report. :)
All in all however I think it's a sensible move for DGA to make.
Post 36
Yes, it's been stated that only those over the age of 18 will be allowed to vote.
Post 37
is the DGA Admins group going to be updated to reflect the committee?
Post 38
El Presidente is fairly well spot on with his assumption.
No person in DGA will be paid for any service. This I can assure you. There are no exceptions to this rule. It is being run like any other Association an example being a football, tennis, cricket club etc. The whole organisation is totally voluntary and is being run in a total legal environment.
The voting restriction to persons over 18 is in line with the legalities of Constitutions to protect the club and to ensure the positions applied for on the Comittee are able to be succesfully run by the person being nominated. This is a standard Constitutional clause in just about every sporting, educational or entertainment constitution.
A member of DGA will be someone who joins for a fee and that member in return has certain rights open to him within the DGA. It is also anticipated he is able to recive discounts at certain retail outlets for parts etc.
The Consitution will be posted along with other documentation once we have been through the legal process of applications etc.
What you have to consider is what we are doing is for DGA and you as gamers and members alike. We want this to survive and every person on the comittee is dedicated to work his guts off and make it work. If a problem comes along, we will build a bridge and get over it with the best resolution in mind. That being to ensure you all have fun and enjoy yourselves at a lan event.

what about mine question

Quote from Fremen:

At current pretty sure its going to stay at the Greek School which we hire pretty much once every month.
Its a little hard to say on the gov't grants but I am pretty sure a venue that is suitable would be on the table just not straight away :)
Hope that answers it.

thanks dude :D

Question:
I'm very new (stupid) to this becoming a whole association thing, even though i've been clued in on certain aspects.
If the chance arose that there was a plentiful source of funding or surplus revenue, could it mean the purchasing of a server for an online DGA Ass./GU gaming server?
*twiddles fingers*
Cow
Post 43
Cow, the short answer is yes... including something like that in a grant request would be quite do-able in my mind, providing exposure for the organisation and our events.
Post 44
yeha how great would that be if we got 2 servers online for GU, DGA
then we could have a few permant games running and as new games come out we can run that server till it gets boring
not that would rock :p
DGA see if you can get this going and then OD can make some fine ass game servers
Post 45

The grants need to thought thru and worked out the best way to utilitise whatever money is granted to us.
The DGA Team will be doing these things soon.
Everything else about the Association needs to be finalised first.
Then the submissions can be put forward.
Have patience.

Ok heres just a quick few q's.
Couldnt you hire out say Darwin Skills Development Scheme rooms? theyve got like 3-4 rooms that can hold 30-50 people, with desks and network ports along the walls.
Also, if on the commitee, are all the meetings mandatory? I only ask this because of work, i dont think i could get every weekend off, not in my position anyways.
Cheers,

1) You know the big huge arse hall next to DSD well thats where DGA is atm .. The hall with the canteen on it. It holds 100-150 people so thats better suited to DGA.
2) On the commitee you would only join it if you can make 95% of the meetings. So in saying that. 4 out of 5 meetings. So no not mandatory but you have to think of your position and the input that you could provide.
Post 53
Most organisations have rules about attendance: the usual one is that missing two or three without leave is grounds for dismissal.
Anyway, since when did 4/5 = 95%? You been hitting the bottle again kurt? :P :D
