Death
Death are death metal band from Florida, they are credited with starting the death metal genre, they were fronted by guitarist Chuck Schuldiner who sadly died of a brain tumor at the age of 33 late 2001.

They arent really as brutal as a band like cannibal corpse, but what they lack in brutallity, the make up in precision of sound.

Immortal
Immortal are a Norwegian Black metal band who formed around 1990, unlike most other Nowegian black metal acts, Immortal chose to distance themselves from the exstremist satanic terrorist activities such as the actions of bands like Emperor and Mayhem, who burnt down churches.
Immortal have gone through many members, including losing their guitarist who got Carpal tunnel syndrome and thus, was unable to play.
On their latest album, Sons of northern Darkness, which im my opinion is their best effort, in terms of sound quality, they have a mixture of thrash sound, and majestic gothic sounds, their earlier work, more emphasis is placed on the thrash sound. Immortal are my favorite band. Sadly these guys broke up last year.

Cannibal Corpse
Cannibal corpse formed in Buffalo, New York in 1988, after releasing their first demo "A skull full of maggots" they quickly gained quite a fan base, in 1989 they released their first full length album, Eaten back to life. from then on, they became notorious for their voilent gore soaked lyircs and offensive song titles such as "Entrails ripped from a virgin's ****" and "Meat Hook sodomy" they have been banned in various countries, including Australia, in Germany, it is illegal for them to play any songs from their first 3 albums when on tour, and their third album "Tomb of the mutilated" is is banned completly.
Since their formation, they have gone through two rhythym guitarists and are now with their second singer, who in many people's opinion is better than their first.

Behemoth
Behemoth are a Polish Death metal band with Black metal elements in their music. Originally, they started out as a black metal band, but changed their sound to a rougher, death metal sound. These guys are very technical and have a lot of interesting sounds not normally heard on a Death metal album.

Iron Maiden
From east end London, started the new wage of heavy metal and were front running pioneers for bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer etc. Very melodic tune to the music, a lot of time changes and not to mention a **** load of songs to choose from, Steve Harris has written hundreds of songs most of which have made the studio albums. If you love metal and want a band that has meaning to their songs with awesome melodies then Maiden are for you. :cool:

Jesus - Death and Immortal happen to be a couple of personal favorites. Good choices.

Astriaal
Aussie melodic black metal. These guys recently released their debut full length after numerous mCD releases. 'Renascent Misanthropy' is a brilliant mix of old style true black metal, with influences from the greats such as Burzum, Immortal, Mayhem and Satyricon, but with a modern and sophisticated edge. The music doesnt thrive on minimalism, neither does it rely on the standard concepts of black metal (death to christianity, etc). Instead, lyrical concepts delve into the concepts of astral existence, celestial transendence and the conquering of the mind and the universe. Unique and amazing.

Windir
Singer/songwriter Valfar started this band as a solo project some years ago, and eventualy, other musicians came on board to help out. After 3 demo's, four full length albums were released. The bands sound is typicaly norweigan black metal, but with a heavy mix of folk and polka into their music. Its quite funny at first, but it realy grows on you and the tunes played on traditional instruments on top of the distorted guitars and furious blast beats make this extremely enjoyable. Unfortunatly, Valfar died of hypothermia early this year. He and his music will be missed.

Vehemence
Recently got in touch with these guys through my zine, and had the opportunity to listen to several of their tracks. I can safely tell you, these guys are great. Their sound is distinctly death metal, but with heavy influences from the Gothenburg feild of melody. Think early 'At the Gates' and you'll get a good idea.

Psycroptic
Amazing technical death metal from Tasmania. Who would've thunk it! This is fast, furious, insane and utterly brilliant. These guys mix the standard death metal formula with a variety of styles, including black metal, grindcore and power metal (mainly concerned with the lyrics though). If you get a chance to pick up their 'Scepter of the Ancients' album, you wont be dissapointed.

Destroyer 666
Aussies know their metal... anyone who disagrees shall be shot. Frontman K.K. Warslut brings new meaning to the words 'extreme metal'. Essentialy, this could be considered 'blackend thrash', but its realy just great metal, about as headbangingly good as it gets. 'Phoenix Rising' is a landmark in extremity.

Agalloch
These guys are from America. I didnt think Americans knew anything about good music (except Vehemence), but I was wrong. While the closest comparison lies in the Swedish prog deathers Opeth, it's still a weak comparison. A listen to their latest release 'The Mantle' will confirm that this band has something different from every band before it. The blend of accoustic atmosphere with black metal elements and vocals... is just unique. Pick up a copy, have a listen. Its magnificent, epic, atmospheric and moody. One of my personal favorites of all time.

This band is the soul reason why UK music owns all. You could even go so far as to say the greatest Art Rock band of our generation.

Muse
Much in the same style of Radiohead, this UK band is growing in popularity. Although similar in genre to Radiohead, the music is quite different. They incorporate a lot of 19th century Classical music into their rock and use a lot more synthesiser in their music.

Very unknown band here in Australia but in the UK I hear it was a hit when its album 'Ego War' was released last year. Think British Gangster Rap sung/rapped to different styles of music. Accent is good for a laugh but the music is upbeat and catchy.

Yeh, i second that - Muse is INCREDIBLE when you're whacked, but Radiohead just don't do it for me

Formed 1990, San Diego California. Has gone through countless line-up changes (it is rumoured that the band has seen 16 ex-members pass through their ranks), with Wade Youman (drums) being the only original member still left in attendance. He was eventually joined by Scott Russo (vocals), John Bell (bass), Rob Brewer (guitar) and Steve Morris (guitar). Unwritten Law debuted in 1994 with the independently released Blue Room, before signing with Epic Records (primarily for better distribution), which in turn reissued their debut. Their sophomore effort surfaced a year later, 1996's Oz Factor, which was produced by Bad Religion's Greg Graffin, as the band switched labels once more, this time to Interscope Records. Their self-titled, Rick Parashar-produced third album was issued in 1998. Shortly before its release Bell was replaced by Pat Kim of Sprung Monkey. The quintet waited four years before issuing another release, Elva, which saw them move towards a more mainstream rock sound and score a bona fide MTV hit with "Seein' Red". The same August, Morris was injured by a bomb planted at his California home by a vindictive neighbour. Shortly afterwards, the band announced they had signed a new recording contract with Lava Records.

Azreal: Ok i stole that from MTV, but recently if nobody else has heard - Wade Youman has been fired from Unwritten Law after starting the band when he was 12. It's shit, their's nothing else to say about it - and the Az is angry

What is it in their music that makes you cringe I wonder? If you can appreciate music like that of Muse it is very strange you can't appreciate that of radiohead. Maybe you have only heard a few of their earlier songs that you didn't particularly like... What songs have you heard that made you come to this conclusion?

I've got about 5 of their albums, for friends sake - and i've listened to their music. It just doesn't do it for me, and no - i don't think you can compare the two. Muse are heaps more talented, the sheer amount of individual sounds in each song are incredible.

Hmm... perhaps a few non-metal suggestions...

Actualy, I cant be bothered describing, but I do heavily reccomend these to any non-metal fans who enjoy good music.

A band that is just awesome - The Smashing Pumpkins

Ok, so there's one song from Radiohead, that I've heard, that I like... and that's Creep.

Leonel: Paranoid Android, 2+2=5, There There (It sounded like they were building up to SOMETHING and they just kept letting it go...bleh~), Idioteque, You and Whose Army, Karma Police, No Surprises (although this one isn't 'terrible' - I just think it could have been better).

Whereas I like many songs from Muse: Hysteria, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist, Time is Running Out, Feeling Good, Butterflies and Hurricanes, The Small Print, Falling Down, Sunburn, Dark Shines and Stockholm Syndrome. Those are regularly on my playlist... I do wish I knew why so many people love Radiohead... but, generally, they don't appeal to me and I think Muse are very distinct from Radiohead.

EDIT: Another Band I highly recommend is Stonesour. Yes, they are good.

hmmm...they kinda sound like radiohead, a little too much if you know what i mean...there's also a fair bit of jeff buckly in it with the whining and the screeching. we love our jeff, no one can compare. pitty he's dead like all the other singular wonders of the music world.

Wow that is very curious... You have listened to some of the good hits of Radiohead yet still don't like them. No Surprises is one of my faves on OK Computer... but are the others terrible or just plain unappealing to you? I seriously can't understand how you can't love Radiohead :confused:

Personally, The uniqueness of Radiohead and its ability to add such depth to their music is what strikes me. Not many other bands these days can manage to achieve that same depth. To me such depth is a show of real talent. Old school music shows a lot more depth than mainstream music nowadays. But then again they didn't have a lot of digital enhancement. They had their chosen instrument and their talent. I also love Muse for this same reason... They have this depth that isn't apparent in a lot of music today. Radiohead just manages to go deeper. Also its the fact that I can determine a Radiohead song simply by the singing of a line of lyric that Thom Yorke is singing :P Can do the same with Muse and Powderfinger.

The Bends is a good album to listen to if you're Radiohead-curious but can't quite wrap your head around some of their newer less mainstream songs.

High & Dry and Karma Police are the two songs that initially cought my attention.

I can listen to other non-mainstream material but Radiohead just doesn't do it for me - on the whole...

As an example the lyrics seem random sometimes: You & Whose Army... It's probably got a really great reason for being like that but even if I sat down and analysed the shit out of it I don't think I could tell what they are on about. Then there's the question of the significance of it...

Another: Everything in its Right Place... huh!?

I probably don't like Radiohead for the same reason I dislike some of the modernistic abstract art like "Blue Poles" - the type of art where a black line down the centre of a huge canvas is supposed to make the viewer feel lonely an unimportant in the grand scheme of the world.

So, not my thing.

I guess the flipside is it probably makes a lot of their fans 'feel' a certain way... it doesn't move me in the least.

I find that the most amazing music is the kind that can be left up to interpretation, that can mean something different to different individuals.

If you don't get anything from their music, if it means nothing to you... it doesn't mean it doesn't mean anything at all.

Nah, you see, it would be impossible to tell you the meaning, as it's the meaing TO ME. Which was the point I somewhat ineloquently made earlier. If you cant see it, oh well, your loss. Find some other music where you don't have that problem. BUT, if you DO see it, then each message will be tailer specificly for you - it takes two to tango. And THAT is the beauty of great music.

If you REALLY want a 3rd party take - read this - it's quite well done.

That's what I was getting at, tell me what it means to you. But oh well, I guess it is my loss... but then again, if the music doesn't have a meaning for me - can't relate to it in any way - then, to me, it isn't great music.

as for band recommendations, well basically my favorite bands are: radiohead, muse, queens of the stone age, chemical brothers, audioslave, and also I like whatever is on au.ets-global.org:8004 and radio.ausnix.com:8000, especially johan geilen's A State Of Trance is really good :)

Dualith - if our music taste was any more similar, I'd bare your children. I think you should have Administrator access based soley on that short list of bands. ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHA thats a funny response if I ever saw one... I am actually surprised at the amount of people here who enjoy Radiohead as much as either me or dualith... Its good to see not everybody has sucked themselves in to commericialism or death/black metal :P

Using 'commercial' in the same context as death and black metal is plain out wrong. Commercial would be the largest demographic of music listeners in the world, while extreme metal would be one of the smallest. Get it?
