ok i'm in a band i play an alto sax ( school band )..... hrrmm this looks like this thread is gunna be crap... any ways
in 2nd of july i'm going to a tour, it's for this "international youth and music festival" i'm going to Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria, we're representing australia as they said, i'm coming back at 18th, cost heaps of money as well so yeah. Back to the International youth and music festival, it's a competition of the bands and i gotta march, we've been planning this last year and i had to march in the scorching sun which is horrible but you know it is worth it i guess, and we also have this thing that we combine with all the other bands and play a few pieces that we only practice once. The worse thing i guess about this is we gotta have heaps of practice and like near the end of the day you get really tired and hungry, and we also gotta do fun raising like sell chocolates, lamintons, get sponsors (like individual people, companies etc etc), and also a pre tour concert we're doing on Friday with james morrison, play in the parliament house("0, 000), and marching to a place called st andrew church to darling harbor (", 000). We also had to publisise ( dunno spelling -.-) ourselves, so far we did that 3 or more times, we have been on live television, march in the easter show, play at parliament house, march to darling harbor, and Sydney Morning Herald came by as well to interview some of us so yea.
Doubt you guys interested but i might wanna tell you this anyway, it is my friest time to goto Europe and i guess it's a 1 time experience.
lol sif practice... if its a good piece you should be able to memorise it :P. What pieces are you playing... give us more details! I don't understand why you'd want to go to europe tho... next year our school band gets to go to japan >=D

theres a competition there ini Vienna why not go there?? i heard everyone wins something, and the people who goto japan is our rugby team. Also we play pretty crap music but meh it's a one time experience thing for me i guess

and Jay... try loosening that empasure (not sure how to spell that one stupid french word) and you won't need tally ho's like ever. I used to have that problem of teeth digging into bottom lip until I had to play really really high notes that were overly sharp and keep them flat through lipping down. That really loosened my empasure and ever since I have never gone back to tally ho's... And don't tell me empasure for alto is diff to clarinet cos I know that... but its not diff to bass clarinet :P
It wasn't so much what I was playing, just how long and what I was playing (in note day long in trios, duets, stage band, main band, and then combined band at music camp). Also a main factor that my lower canines didn't tend to help the situation much.
Edit: Oh yeah and when I start reaching the upper stratosphere on my alto, the tone just seriously bottoms out.
how does tally ho's help sore lips then cos when their sore theres nothing much you can do...
saxes are piss easy instrument to learn :P give me a sax tell me the fingering in one octave give me a sheet of music and I can do it :P
try having to change all your fingering when you hit the upper register and having to mess around with embouchure to get tuning right in the higher octaves. actually scratch that try messing with embouchure to even play those high notes... if your gonna play any sax... play a bari because bass > treble :P

Lemonjuice: Yeah I did enjoy playing the saxophone(s), for the ~8 years I did during school. Just haven't had time since I started engineering, and time is so limited so I've dropped it more or less. When I start working I hope to get myself a sweet custom w/silver bell at some stage.
Since I bought my sax after 3-4 years of playing Ive still got my original 301? series yangisawa semi-pro model. Has a sweet as low-middlehigh register, but gets typically hard to maintain tone on the higher registers as with most student-semi models.
Got an otto link gold plated 5 star series metal mouthpiece. Usually with a medium fibrecell reed or some sort of 3.5+ bamboo (haven't used the old bamboo reeds for a while).
Switch back to the old stock hard rubber for more sweet sounding pieces, I will one day have to buy a nice hard rubber classical mouthpiece.
Only ever did up to a grade 5 exams during year 8, but after that I just stuck to stage bands and stuff, more on the practical side than theory. Working toward exams just drained the complete fun out of it.
I did help start the group and gave most of the ideas for a stage band group called Jazz-pzazz. (omgwtf they decided that on the day I was sick - typcal brassband n00bs). When I left that, yeah went to hell. I made my point one day and left.
I did dabble among flute and clarinet for a while, but never had the $$ to go very far at all.
We've also got neo who took up the Tenor for a while, after prolly a Sander's influence and mine after 3 years. I think he's gone to the string side now though. for the chick methinks ;)
Tally ho's are also a magical thing, sometimes it also helps to wipe those strips between the pads if they're starting to get sticky. As for why do they feel better. Would you prefer to ride a horse bareback or with a saddle if you had a 18" dildo stuck up your arse.
yes! 3 more dayz left i can't wait i just started packing but the problem is i got a ***k load of work to do before i go which sux cause it makes it seem like a long long long long way to go, wish the techers would forget about it :'( , anyways my friend also bought a dsc-f717 sony digi camera for me to take it there which is cool.
