It's been a long time since I've used a modem. I can remember when 33.6kb were brand new and suppose to be fast, then came the 56k, and of course adsl. But I was just wandering, have they made any faster modems then 56k? I heard of dual 56k or something like that. Does anyone know if i could get a fast modem and which ISP provides them. This is because my college has a d/l limit of 25mb... So help plz :)??

Nope nothing much has changed in terms of Dialup Modem speeds for like 5 years. 56k is still the best out there. ISPs typically don't provide them - you have to go out to dick smiths or someplace and buy one off the shelf.

Dialup modems are limited to Dialup speeds.
Broadband modems are limited by the hardware used. Most only go to about 8mbit. Some will go a bit higher AFAIK (12mbit were sold as Broadband packages when I was in Japan a few years ago).
Then there are ISDN modems. Which are generally 64k and Dual 64k... don't know much about ISDN though.

I can't get adsl either, because someone reckons it won't work. Maybe because i will have to use a college line, which means 24/7 access i guess and they dont' want that!!... But would ISDN be different, like would it be like a dialup but faster?? Because people can use dial up....
Also a friend says he uses dial-up from his dad connection. If my dad had the net in darwin, could i ring that number or does it have to be in the area of south australia?

ummm my modem can go up to 150kb a sec BUT the phone lines are limited to 56k for some supid ****in reason

The phone lines limit speed on dialup because of the way it works. Phone lines were originally invented for voice transmission, which they do fine by using a certain rang of frequencies in the line. When you use dial up, only a very small portion of the available frequencies is used for speech, so thats all you get for net connection.
ADSL uses the rest of the frequency available in the lines, which is also why some places cant get ADSL, because they dont have that extra bandwith to use.

close001. Your modem can only go to 112k... and that's not the modems line speed.. that is the rate the modem is transferring information to you computer. NOT over the phone line.
