i live in the millner district and the telsra mob say its gonna cost us $989 just so we can just get it.
ppl say that all u need is a normal fone line and other ppl say that they can do it thru the cable line u know from austar
can some one help me by telling what the F*** is goning on with this

ADSL comes through a normal copper pair and had nothing to do with austar and EVERYTHING to do with Telstra.
ADSL can only be enabled through a phone line. As Burk said, it has NOTHING to do with Austar. The only way you can get ADSL is if your phone line is copper because of the way ADSL works.
When you speak on the phone, you only use a small portion of the frequency range available in copper, and this suits basic speech just fine. However, when you use dial-up, you are limited to that same small portion of the line as it goes down the line using the same part as what speech in the telephone does. ADSL works by utilising the rest of the available frequencies in the copper lines instead of the voice only frequencies. That way you get MUCH more bandwith and because you are using a different set of frequencies you can use the phone at the same time as the phones specific protion of the line is left untouched. However the phone will pick up ALL activity in the line, so a line filter is needed to remove the ADSL part of the traffic, and allow just the phone portion to come through.
You WON'T be able to get access to ADSL if you have pair gain phone lines, because as the names suggests.......
How it's going to cost that much to have it set up is beyond me. Unless that's a quote for sat-net, the only other reason I can think of for that price is if they are going to install a copper line for you as you have pair gain lines.

You mean transpositioning.. which tel$tra don't cahrge for.. they do it (or try to) when you apply for ADSL.
Try applying for adsl with another company, like iinet or Internode, they seem to have a great ability to get pass the bullshit that Telstra make when it comes to Adsl.
I also live on Millner ( Possiblly one big RIM ) and cant get ADSL. I applied with Internode and they currently have telstra looking into getting me transpositioned. Only time will tell if It can actually happen. Only another few weeks of waiting before I get the denied :P ... arnt I hopefull. But anyway to even see if your line can get transpositioned takes 5-6weeks because they need to acctually come out and take a look. If they can get it transpositioned then you have to wait another week or so for telstra to actually do it.
I wish I knew how many places around Millner cant get ADSL, maby worth talking to our local member and getting him to put some heat on telstra for the people of Millner.
Telstra got cheap and nasty and put pair-gain everywhere.
They have no ability to look to the future.
They see short term savings and profit only.
Thus all you guys who have pair gain are totally screwed over because of telstra not even considering what future infrastructure plans might be required.
Funny thing is, as noted above now they have to go around and fix/rewire or whatever their mistake. Actually you mostly get flat out refusal to do anything and so must be condemned to the 17th century and modems.
So the total excersize costs twice as much now.
Efficient business that.

yeah p-air gots it but he had to bug and bug telstra till they did something to let him have it

After 4 weeks telstra has got me off my crappy lines (RIM) at the request of Internode. I will probably be on ADSL in another two weeks. Horray, surfing on 46.6k is much better than 28.8k.

so what u mean i should do is go on Internode and if i make then a plan they will send telstra into my place to put in that connection
Yep thats about it.
If you dont mind going with Internode as your ISP. Then just apply with them over the net: http://adsl.internode.on.net/signup/index.htm You will need to give your credit card details and stuff, but dont worry you dont get charged untill they can actually offer the service.
It took 6 weeks all up for Telstra to do a XDSL - alternative pathway check and get me on to Internode. Internode bassically put pressure on telstra to get you on to copper, because they actually want your buisness.
Any way now I am happily surfing at 512k.
