What is used at DGA, DC++?
Do we get given an IP on the day if unregistered?
Will there be Net access for basic ICQ/MSN messaging or browsing?

we are using DC Final..
No internet access!
Unregistered = no entry

omg that is so funny
metalattack you have no idea mate
we use ftp
damn ftp.
I guess it is faster in the long run.
Maybe DGA should consider using dc... there really weren't many FTP servers up last night compared to the amount of computers that were on the network. I know I could have set one up and shared my stuff but I didn't really consider it beforehand and when I came I couldn't find any FTP server programs on the FTP servers that people had up. Also AFAIK DC is easier to do searches with, because everyone has file lists.
I know DGA has just switched to FTP but at the moment it looks like setting up a ftp server is more trouble than it's worth to most people who attend DGAs.
I dont think DGA should even support file sharing in general. If you want a dc server, then by all means go ahead and set one up, but i dont think DGA will support the idea. I don't really like that they support FTP, I think if people want to go illegally leech (mostly) then they should be educating themselves, not relying on DGA.
FTP is as easy as it gets, its really not that hard. 5 min on google and anyone could setup an FTP client.
DGA uses FTP sharing only and only to be used after 12am.
This is for number of reasons. First reason DGA is not about file sharing, it's about gaming. When games are played the pressure of file sharing on the network makes things go slow. Windows file sharing is not encouraged for big files like movies, games, series etc because it slows the network down dramatically. Unfortunatly this wasn't very well inforce at DGA32 but I assume it will be inforce more harshly in future.
IP address are automatically assigned when you connect to the network. There is currently no internet access at DGA. A ftp server can be downloaded from this site http://www.bpftpserver.com/
Is there anyway to get a Darwin Wireless uplink for DGA events??? Also a better FTP server is Gene6 which is available on my server, its easier to setup and use, and has a lot more features...PM me for details.
HAaahhahaha it was while i was packing up to go to dga.. omg.. :(

Well isn't it better to support FTP and push it through instead of using windows file sharing which hogs bandwidth? Stopping file sharing altogether is a bit drastic and that measure would probably see a substantial dropoff in attendance (which I assume isn't a good thing) . If FTP is properly enforced then people will either start putting up FTP servers OR sharing less both of which aren't too bad considering the current system...
Also DGA's not really 2 days, it's more like 24 hours and a tad. :S Seem to be packing up earlier and earlier.
Also only 40% were actually playing games and stuff. Then again there's not much that can be done about the people that go and sit over the corner and do nothing but leech...
Dude its more like 12 - 14 hours because it just dies after like 2:00 AM sunday... it peaks at like 4 and like drops off at midnight...
the best fix is to get some decent switches that let you prioritise traffic, such that game traffic is ALWAYS given priority over non game traffic. problem solved, for a price.
also, it's not that windows file sharing is more bandwidth intensive by design, its just far easier to use so there's more people doing it. if everyone suddenly sets up an ftp server, and everyone suddenly figures out how to use them, you're back to the same problem.
I can't say I noticed any network lag while I was playing games.
but when some1 is leeching from you by windows file sharing, ure ping goes up to like 60 and it lags you down more than dialup.. Thats just what happened to me.
and some of the css servers were really laggy, it was a constant bad thing.
Cant u turn off all file sharing except for games and patches, until midnight. Turn on file sharing after midnight? It would drop numbers, but then more serious gamers could attend and play for the 12 hours, whilst the timetable is up or whatever...
and then u wouldnt get dissapointed gamers not being able to attend because they did not register before the dedicated leechers
EDIT: no offence leechers, but if you want to leech move to sydney and get cable for 24/7 leeching
Very well said owa.
lol....OMG A PING OF 60, that is adsl speed, and ping of 60 is very playable, otherwise, well said

that's more to do with your system; i can have multiple people leeching off me to the tune of 30MB/sec and not see any latency increases. if you have that problem, turn your shares off.

they can't actually, they don't have the hardware in place to do this, all dga can do is request that people refrain from file transfers, and deal with anyone they find who continues to do it.
Sure 60 ping is very playable... when your on the net and everybody pings about the same.. but when your on LAN and everybody is pinging about 3 maybe more times lower than you its not very good...
Owa, the fix for the window file sharing problem is easy... just turn your shares off like Paladin said... The reason windows file sharing isn't meant to be allowed is for latency issues... So why share through windows file sharing and then complain about it? the less people that share, the less there is to leech and the less people leeching...
i only turn on filesharing on my computer when im leeching files.
seems like that works for me. and i let people leech when i dont need my computer.
Yeh, i get hard-core system lag when people leech off me, so i say nay ****ers, NAY.
Also, generally when the lag hits the servers, its not typically one or two people it hits, its usually everyone in the server.
And generally most server lag is caused by not enough bandwidth on the network for everybody ..
with no file sharing a 10meg network would run DGA ..
Hear hear. What's the average shooter use for bandwidth? 128kbit/sec? 256? Maybe a little more with the LAN settings enabled. 100mbit should be able to run every single person (200?) at an Evo event simultaneously in any game they like, without any lag or latency problems.
I was reading of the lans in US and here, running on 10meg for 2000people ..
Its all due to leechers and the bandwidth they chew.
Well, if we dropped back to 10meg, the leechers will nick off, caus it would be too slow for em anyway  :P
Im not saying too do it :) Id rather play with gigabit as well .. Just saying that it can be done :)
Ahh, but i saw the golden egg inside the gooses bum! =p
Looks like a crappy excuse to justify being near a gooses bum if you ask me :p
But yeah....10mb would be gay
i dont see how internet oc3 is like 154mbit and dga lan is 100mbit...
seems a bit weird. couldnt it go to 1000000000000000000mbit or something?
1000mbit would be better but it is too expensive. Is there a way you can limit ips to like 1mbit a sec until midnight?
Limiting bandwidth like that would really suck though....especially as you can get faster speeds playing on the net.

traffic shaping like you asked about requires more expensive hardware than dga currently has.
isnt there an admin program that can do it from a set computer?
if not cut out a few wires... works for me
Personally if you're experiencing lag... don't share while gaming. It's your own fault if you choose to do it. Don't blame those who are leeching off you.
oh wait. you mean limit on an individual computer? look into net limiter. or really, just dont leech/share.
I have used netlimiter at a LAN to control the speed of my ftp shares.
I noticed it made no substantial difference to the "lag" I experienced while gaming.
Ftp is the way to go if you want to host files and have more stabilized computer performance as apposed to window file sharing.
If you lagging in games it’s properly due to your CPU being under load not the network.
Obviously if everyone is lagging this is not the case.
christ wtf is going on. karama getting dsl, parts of humpty doo getting dsl. knight making sense?
someone check the temperature of hell, stat!
I think it's a sign of impending doom...the whole worlds going mad :p

Hmmm, this is tricky. People are apt to try and pin malicious property damage on you. I'd advise against it.

I don't share files at LANs, use my USB Memory stick or CD. However I quite often still experience lag due to others leaching on the same switch, Or perhaps it's some hardware problem with the switch. And it's usually everyone on the table experiencing it not just me. (eg. DC comp DGA 31)
when i said cut out a few wires, i was joking, the cable wouldnt work if there were a few wires missing... :|
I think it would still work
So long as you don’t cut the blue and blue/white
Because with cat5 network cables they only use 1 pair of wires to transfer data. Cat6 is faster because it uses all 4 pairs to transfer data.
cat5 is bs
