Need for Sleep Underground 2 comp

Okay, this is the selected game for the tourney. Fair enough. It's unreliable as hell but the masses have spoken.

The question is, what kind of performance restrictions are we going with?
I see the options as either "opening level stuff so that everyone can play, and the veterans can cheat by upgrading tiny stuff you don't notice" or "unrestricted. go nuts with your 99999hp beast machines..... for the two people who have unlocked everything. everyone else is boned"

Personally, i'd prefer option 2. I don't have a fully sick beast yet, but with three weeks notice, I could do something about it.

Ruling from the judges?

Post 2

Most likely option is that we get a savegame with everything unlocked and give that to people to use for the comp.

Then all car tweaking is the users responsibility.

Post 3

I agree with Harb...thats what I figured would happen...especially as I lost all my saved games in the last format and cant be arsed finishing it again.

Post 4

if there is anyone cheating they will be shot. :)

Post 5

The only problem with using a savegame is... unique parts. The car that helped me finish the game has unique transmission and unique N20. If I were to go up against someone that doesn't have these parts I'd have a distinct advantage.

How would we get around this? Allow those users that actually unlocked uniques to use them... or ban the use of cars in the garage?

Post 6

See this is the problem with letting people play what they want..

Now what the hell is a unique part, and why can't i get a savegame with unique parts unlocked

Post 7

A unique part is something fixed to a car used in the career mode and can't be attached to any other car... It's a use once kind of thing.

You get the part by racing against all those little orange dots on your radar and outrunning them. There are other uniques like visual upgrades... and it took me about 100 races to acquire two unique performance and one unique visual upgrade.

The only way to get around the problem is to go to everybody's screen and make sure they aren't using a car that was used in Career mode.

Post 8

shit

Post 9

we could get everyone to load the savegame provided, therefore they will all have the same set of parts, and no un ique parts

Post 10

and then go around to everyone's computer to make sure that they've loaded the savegame provided?

Post 11

It would limit the need to check every user... you would still need to check the user that spread the savegame around. I suppose I will have to put up with re-tuning the car I want... Yay.. more Dyno testing... :(

EDIT: ^ Then there's that... Colin McRae would've been so much easier :P

It would be relatively easy to check whether they are using cars that they used in Career mode... but you would have to do it every race to make sure :|

Post 12

stupid car games :(

Post 13

Why not just let people play with whatever saved games they've got - of course some people are going to have better cars than others, but let's not forget that this game is tweakable as well (ie, all the engine fiddling around stuff).

Are we saying it's unfair because of the unique parts? Why not have people register as Class A or Class B (depending on whether they're using their own saved game or not), and that way individuals decide whether they want to put up their own beast against everyone else, or take the shortcut method.

I don't think that necessarily having a more powerful car is an advantage - it's how good you can drive the beast.

Post 14

Having a more powerful car is a big advantage. The drivers skill doesn't have as much to do with it as the car they are driving.

Just go for everything unlocked. The best that can probably be done is the winner of each race to have their car checked before they are declared the winner. If they had unique parts then they get disqulified so second place winner has their car checked.. etc. It would be easier than checking everyones comp before the race.

Post 15

You won't be able to check if they have unique parts - it doesn't show (unless you go to the trouble of checking the specs against another car with all level 3 mods, but that still doesn't account for tuning of parts).

Post 16

Quote from Seqo:

Well seqo seems to know what he is doing :P. Instead of going around to everyones you only go around to the winners. I haven't played NFSU 2 only the first one. So i am not 100% sure how this will be done.

Post 17

You can see in quick race mode whether or not the car is a car used in Career mode. However, I could easily do up a level 3 Audi TT that is an exact replica of the one I used in career mode (without uniques) and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference... so when you come around to check the car I'd show you the 'replica' even if I didn't use that one.

I like Xaine's idea, have two classes - restrict the first class to (same car/same selection of parts) and the second can be an open class.

The only problem is that the 'restricted' class... you would still need to check.

Post 18

and then there is the people who use NOS cheats.

Post 19

Burk - the cheats are easy to pick up, as it is a trainer that has to sit in the background (so just get competitors to alt-tab before a race - not a hard option, as there will only be about 4 to 6 per race).

That fool from the last DGA was even stupid enough to use a trainer that had an in-game display - even easier to pick up.

Post 20

'that fool' made it a bit obvious too.. and it completely wrecks the game..

but Xaine, you'll probably be happy to know i lost my save game with my mustang.

Post 21

I lost my save game...but a solution to the overpowered car problem, chuck them on a URL track with lots of corners and no straights....you can have the fastest car but if you cant drive for shit, ur gone

Post 22

Quote from Wrathlon:

kinda defies the purpose of the game ..

URL / Drift / Drag etc etc ..

To make it work the comp would have to use all the race types. and low and behold back at square 1.

To make the comp fair it would have to have every race type.

Post 23

you could make it everyone use the same car. Design for the car will be hidden, so if you car doesn't look like the one in the save game, we know your using a different car.

This way everyone is on equal footing.

Post 24

mmmm....good idea, worth a try

Post 25

Except Id lose everytime unless someone used the Corolla or Pontiac...only cars I can really drive in it. I say let everyone use the car they like and monitor who is using what...I would be happy to give a hand with this.

Post 26

^ as with what Wrathlon said. People will be used to certain cars and will obviously want to drive their preferred choice. Choosing one car for all competitors will leave some at a disadvantage... thus, defeating the purpose of restricting the tournament in this way.

Post 27

Really you could only go unlocked with this..

3 weeks to go if anybody is SERIOUS about playing they will spend the next 3 weeks getting there car better.

Post 28

Can you use steering wheel to play. Since I have never played nfs it won't make any advantage :)

Post 29

I'm sure any sort of steering wheel or gamepad would be allowed.

Post 30

i idnt cheat last time i just kicked your ass cause i was in a much better car. the mx5 is the only car that has all 4 bars full with all level 3 parts

Post 31

lol, i didn't see any names mentioned

Post 32

Quote from close001:

i'll be watching you especially closely now

Post 33

so have you worked out how the comp is going to be run ??

I mean with only 3 weeks away and my car not as good as it could be do I need to spend the time maxing it out only to be told I cant use it ??

whats the go??

Post 34

I think, You should let people use their car's from their own saved game and also for those that haven't passed it supply a saved game.

Yes the people who have finished themselves will get a slight advantage cause of unique parts but maybe this will make more people spend time to pass the game so they could use their own saved game. This way the people playing will be a bit more experienced with driving in the game :)

Post 35

I agree with Tachi........

Post 36

I didn't read all this but a few things I'll point out.

Copying save games to computers is easy.

However, it means that everyone will have the cars done up in that save game. Which means people have to make more cars (assuming they'll want to show off more than one). Cars take time to make.

Unique parts cannot be used in Quick Race/LAN mode. You CANNOT use your Career car for anything outside of the career mode (unlike NFSU), you have to make other cars using those parts unlocked. Which means the maximum a car can be done up, is with level 3 parts. However, unique VISUAL parts are available to use (wide body kits, unique rims, vinyls and spoilers).

In Career mode, you have to go to 'World Map' and complete ALL events to unlock all tracks. By completeting the ones SHOWN on the map only, you will not unlock all tracks - if you want variety in your dragging, this needs to be done. Because otherwise there's about < 10 tracks to chose from.

I have a save game which is completed. I am working on FULLY completing the game 100%. This should be done within a few days. I dunno when DGA is and I won't be there (NSW). However, I can complete it, then send it to someone or everyone or host it. They could download it prior to DGA, then do up their own cars. This would save time at DGA, everyone would have the same parts, and all maps would be unlocked.

Whoever hosts the game, can choose the restrictions on cars. When you actually join a game, you can see what cars people are racing with (you can't SEE, but you can see the name of) and the challenge to you (ie, even, sufficient, challenging).

Also, people should note that there is an ALWAYS ACTIVE filter. You need to adjust the filter to suit everything (race type, race breaker, restrictions). This is quite ghey, but meh. So the restriction should be set to LEVEL 3 only. Because while Drifting, having NO tyre upgrades makes drifting easy. This means that cars joining the game have to have all level 3 parts installed.

Hope that all helps. This is my 1337th post, and I know im a big NFSU2 nerd :)

Post 37

Quote from Amphibious One:

Yes you can - just flashed it up again to be sure, and my career car is one of the cars able to be chosen.

Post 38

I can vouch for xaine, and his cars :)

Post 39

If you let people use career cars you are limiting this competition to only the people that have played the whole way through and people who are willing to play with someone else's career car.

Cuz career cars hack. Unique upgrades make sure of that.

Post 40

That's the reason I suggested Class A and Class B style comps - those dedicated to build a career car with uniques, and those who just want to compete.

That way you're not penalising those without career cars, and at the same time you're letting people who want to, compete with their career car.

Post 41

Why not just those that are serious about playing .. go get the trainer bloody cheat the game to do your car up at home and then come to the lan with the best car you can??

Post 42

OMG....is it really that difficult to have someone just check the cars before a race starts....I already said Id be happy to help with this. This would of course depend on the format of the competition...exactly how is it going to be run as in competition layout....4 in a race? 2 in a race? Designated times? Any other details?

Post 43

Wrathlon the 1337 h4x0r will 'check' his own car hey....

Post 44

Wrath, it's too easy to switch to another car before the race starts. It wouldn't work.

Post 45

From what I can see its either do what Xaine said .. With restricted and DGA sets the car that people use and Unrestricted .. which car hacks wins.

Or you go fully unrestricted with 3 weeks give people the trainer to use at home to get there cars hotted up

Post 46

I mean it doesnt really matter, my Civic is going to slay you all :)

Post 47

Do they have a Daewoo Matiz, couze that will beat you all :p A wopping 796cc motor and 13 inch wheels, hot stuff!! All three cyclinders hammering away to give it a huge 50hp. 0-100 in 17.6 seconds and a top speed of 143kph. Beat that!!

(damn my wife must have been hammering it from Katherine, she reckons she was doing almost 150 all the way)

Post 48

was it on the back of a truck?

Post 49

No, but maybe it was stuck under the tailgate

Post 50

i have a completed version of underground 2 with suped cars we mite be able to use my file.

Post 51

Quote from dragon xr:
i have a completed version of underground 2 with suped cars we mite be able to use my file.

a lot of people have them too by sounds of things... its just what to allow in these save files in the comp...

Post 52

Surely we could use a trainer to unlock lev 3 everything and just forgo the uniques?

Post 53

... Then there's that.

Post 54

You know, there are standard cars done up... But then I'd prefer to race someone with my done up car... That's just the way it is.

I mean, it's not like you're cheating using a car with 'unique' mods... Who cares? All those whining and complaining about how it's not fair, get over it.

Post 55

It's just an advantage which others won't be able to make use of, making it just that tad bit unfair for those that don't play the game very much.

Post 56

the people who have completed the game and got the unique parts are gonna own those who haven't on technique alone anyway

/me shrugs

Post 57

And on the flip side, those of us who have gone to the trouble of playing the game, and creating their own car with uniques, wanting to see how they compare with other players, are made to be disadvantaged also - just as unfair.

That's why we should really have two classes of comp....

Post 58

What if the only unique mod I have is the bloody spoiler, and I don't really give a shit.
So what about the more skilled drivers? What about CS? There are people who spend nearly every waking hour playing that game, and then there's me who's not bad for someone who plays it once in a while (at lans only)... You don't see me bitching about always getting headshot by the the people who are clearly more 'Skilled' at the game then I am. The difference is that this game rewards skill.

Post 59

At first I thought that it would be unfair, you don't see people who continously playing fps's through their entirety have unique weapons when they play in a comp. However people who have been playing it for months would have better skills anyways, so what would it matter if they have uniques. Plus if I had built up my car I would like to race it against others that have cars they think are better.

For enjoyment for people who don't have uniques though it would be good to have 2 classes. It would get a little dissapointing having really good players with uniques lapping you for the 3rd time.

Post 60

Yo Unseen,

Can I keep that AWP I had at the end of the last clanwar for Evo mate?
I think I had 12K too, can buy all you guys colts for the pistol round too

I know it's a bit unfair but because I play this game more than other ppl I should be allowed to be better.

I can't believe some of you guys :)

Post 61

lol, fair point

Post 62

as long as its not "unique" other wise we will have 2 more pages of BS :)

Post 63

it's pretty ****ing simple. fps = level playing ground, where the only distinction between players is so-called 'skill' (not taking into account machine performance).

nfsu:2, where some players have access to better mods than other players, is NOT a level playing field, and it is no longer about who has the most 'skill', and any competition where the playing field is distorted by access to different levels of upgrades is a farce.

consider if you were playing an fps, where you were limited to having just a pistol, but other players had 'unlocked' access to assault rifles and the like. fair? hardly.

Post 64

Does kalgo's blood count? and I scratched it jumping down from the nest in inferno at WCG. Been holding onto that AWP ever since. :)

To the Games admins.

Get this sorted please guys otherwise it will be a mess come Evo time.
It's obvious what has to be done.

2 comps

1.
A unlimited cars/uniques/whatever, make it a timetrial or H2H on one track that should be announced weeks ahead of the event for ppl to practice. Everyone's ego will be satisfied that everyone else has seen their uber/cheated cars.

2. Same thing but with a preset basic car no mods on a track announced weeks ahead of the event so ppl can practice with that car and that track/tracks.

I have faith in Harb, but its draggin on a bit :)

Post 65

Right seeing as this is getting unhelpful I'll tell you how i see it at the moment.

a) I am not running 2 driving comps in addition to the fps and trs comps.

b) At this point I plan on providing whatever reasonable trainers + savegames are available to whoever wants them. If you wish to race with your career car, good luck.

c) The alternative where I go and check everyone's computer, is not an alternative, the alternative in this case will be a cancellation of the racing comp or a change to the 2nd preference.

Keep in mind that running 2 comps also means I have to go check everyones computer to make sure the 2nd division isn't using uniques.

As for the comp: It will consist of three rounds. Drifting, Sprint and Circuit. And then a finals series with the highest ranked.

Small random groups will compete against eachother in each round in a best of three tracks. They will be awarded points for 1st 2nd 3rd etc for each race. The highest scoring players after the three rounds will go on to the finals series which i have yet to decide the format of.

Tracks will be chosen during the first day of the lan. Competition will be held on the third day in order to allow for people to get their cars tweaked, and to practice on the tracks chosen.

Whoever wins the top three will have their computer thoroughly inspected for any kind of unfair cheat.

that is all for now

Post 66

whats the prize for it? or is it just for pure gaming pleasure?

Post 67

woohoo a decision ..

what about the rts and fps ?? how are they being done ?? double elimination ?? single ?? 2v2 and 5v5 Im guessing.

Post 68

other comps will be 2v2 and 5v5

as for elimination I'll work out a system shortly

Post 69

Cool a final decision :)

Post 70

ive finished my carrer and still says 73% complete

Post 71

w00t starting to take shape.

Post 72

So long as there's a drifting comp, I'm happy in the end. ^_^

Post 73

prizes for comps will be worked out (if any) by the treasurer closer to the event. It really ties in with how many people are registered.

Post 74

now all we need is times and details on how and where and what with .. for all 3 and people can plan on when to come ..

Post 75

i have just one question, how do u actually use ure career car??? ive been trying for like an hour and i just cant do it...
and one more question, how much better is the uniques to the level 3s? maybe they only like 1%? or maybe they dont do anything at all, maybe it just something extra to do, does anyone really know how much better they are?
Cant u only have a maximum of 4 ppl per race? not 6?
And i cant log into the lan lobby of nfsu2 when im offline, i can log in when im connected to the net, but not when im disconnected. I tried playing nfsu2 with lepi, but i could not log in to the lan lobby, whereas he could (he was connected to the net, and when he disconnected he could not log in to the lan lobby either...) How do i fix this?

that is all...

Post 76

at the upper right of the car-selection screen there'll be a category (stock or all cars or whatever). click the arrows on either side to change it to career. this is how you select your career cars.

about the other questions ... i'm sure xaine or seqo or wrath will help.

Post 77

We tested a car with all 3 performance uniques against one with just level 3 mods, and in exactly the same circumstances (ie, taking the same routes on a track) found that there was a 2 second difference - which is an unfair advantage.

Ideally, having 2 classes of comps would have been nice, but logistically, this just isn't possible, so for the actual comps it will just be level 3 mods, and that's it - no career cars.

Post 78

huh? I gathered from Harb's post that Career cars are going to be permitted...

I'm confused.

Post 79

point b

b) At this point I plan on providing whatever reasonable trainers + savegames are available to whoever wants them. If you wish to race with your career car, good luck.

back to square 1.

Post 80

or maybe from the admin lan they changed what we were told earlier in the post.

Post 81

Seqo as xaine just pointed out.... ^^

Post 82

Quote from Unseen:

Yeah, that was the case.
