Post 4
EVO was awesome, thanks DGA and all your sponsors. Urit loves the new case :)
Post 5
glad it went to a worthy gamer. :)
also, the members draw went to
DVD
Zard999
Elmo
3 new members, all without ADSL, and all can get it. Couldn't have asked for better personally. :)
I will write up a big evo post after my next nap.
Post 6
DOW comp was won convincingly by phoenix and brownie
CS:S comp won by aR vs SB.
NFSU2 comp was cancelled due to lack of interest.
Post 7
i shoulda won case... have you seen it? neotheo took pic of it, im making new one though. Hope it goes well
Post 8
actually, i think it was better that urit won. :)
Post 9
yeah he was the only one who actually reacted to a prize... except for mavrick who practically ripped his pants off to show eater his blue underwear for a DGA shirt
Post 10
Was a good LAN indeed.
I must say thank you to all participents, as this EVO was one of the cleanest LAN's i can remember. Everyone was much tidier than previous. :)
BIg thanks to Harb for running the comps, without any assistance from myself at all :P
Also to Eater, who once again fed the masses with his meaty delights ;)
To w00p for spending hours making cables etc
The list goes on :)
To those i didnt mention, you know who you are.
And of course, thanks to IGN and all the other sponsors, for supplying some kick arse prizes and making some happy gamers even happier.

It was a great LAN. I was very impressed with the way people conducted them selves, everyone was well behaved.. cept for the dude who called me a noob + some swear words for standing in front of him in a cs game :| .. never got to tell him to come up to the admin table and say it as the server went down :( . I was also impressed that there were no major network or power issues, a few problems here and there but took no longer than a few minutes to sort out.
Thanks to the people who helped out, especially Hamburgers, Jay and Toasthall who took time off work to help. They made the weekend alot easier for the rest of the official.
The main annoyance to the weekend was the people who walked in without paying and then lied about it, they were caught in the end. I believe we tried our best to make sure we caught everyone before walking in the door, but for the people who lied about paying it's a very big dissapointment. Thanks to the people who did the right thing by queuing in the line and or going to see an official. We also had a heap of new people at this lan which was great to see.
I hope it was a good way for all the kids to wrap up their holidays before going back to school. I heard some great comments from the parents which i was pleased about.
... and i still cant' believe i drew my own name for the prize draw :P
Post 13
things did occassionally slow down though

I quite enjoyed myself, besides the Aircon problem on the first day (and it was a bit slow...) the saturday was f'n awesome and the sunday was good too... or the whole two hours that I was there for :p

apart from the annoyingly intermittent packet loss saturday afternoon? ~3% packet loss over 5 hours is very ordinary, and made TFC completely unplayable for quite a few of us.
Post 17
Yeah that sucked.. but it was fixed and it was better than having the whole entire network fall out or everyone suffering the problem. It affected me too, but I didn't notice it for very long.
Post 18
Soz bout that Paladin but we didnt forsee the clowns up the back right habd table that came in late pluggin themselves into all the switches hey could reach and making it hard for everyone, but it was sorted quickly by the Admin crew and everyone agreed that the network was nice and fast for gaming and leeching.
Id like to say a big thankyou to the Admin crew for making this an enjoyable LAN
Big Thankyou goes out to the all important people that make a great LAN event possible.
Big thanks to Jeat for helping organise the member prizes from Internode and for the boys making an appearance for the prize draw.
And a extremely big thankyou to all the new members who signed up on the day.
Keep your eyes and ears open for the next DGA held LAN event and other events coming soon ;)
Happy Eater

Omega
I had heaps of fun and really wanna thank Harb for wikid comps & time table .. and to thank Omega For their generous providing of a Demo Machine, although it wasn't ready to play on until really Saturdi!
Also Thanks to Eater And Brownie for the Wikid Food!
another great DGA event... Glad i could help out!
Post 20
hang on eater those clowns were us. and wasnt the problem that a couple of cables on the switch next to us were buggered so info was being sent but not recieved and all the buffers on all the switches filled up?
im not complaining or anything i am just trying to see how us plugging into 2 switches made a problem. lots of networks are set up that way. please tell me what we did wrong and why it went wrong so we dont do it next time. coz we never meant for the network lag to happen
if you dont want this to go further and have people arguing about it please pm me. i just dont want to start nemore wars atm
Post 21
i don't no if this has any affect on the network at all.. but i remembered at CSC where i plugged 2 ends of cat5 into the switch (so it loops) and it litterally killed the network for 30mins atleast.... no one could access anything it was that bad.... if you plugged to cables into 2 other switches... could this do the same thing?
Post 22
It sure could, and does. Great way to sneakily kill a network :)
Post 23
so then how does a backbone work. the basic way a network works is it sends info to an address and it doesnt matter how or which way it gets there. this was the reason the internet was built like this so there wasnt one big central point that could get taken out and sever the connection. it was built to be basicly unstable. to survive a nuclear war. i dont see how plugging 2 uplinks into one switch ****s it
Post 24
uhm, what was the setup on that table exactly?
Post 25
we had our own switch with all our computers on it and that was uplinked into 2 switches
and yes it was a switch not a hub
we only did it to increase bandwith because if one person on the table started leeching then the whole table lagged.
we tried to plug into the gigabit backbone but we couldnt find a cable long enough
Post 26
your single switch was plugged into two dga switches?
Post 27
yep. and one of the ones we were plugged into was the one with all the problems.
Post 28
I heard they tried to plug it into several switches (2+)....
Post 29
right. loops in a base-T network are bad. you end up with packets in a neverending state of transmission, essentially flooding the switches. (think of them as doing laps). broadcast storms, etc. good way to bring a network to its knees.
frankly, dga should outright ban anyone from plugging anything other than a pc into their network, and they should probably supervise that too.
Post 30
no thats everyone exaggerating we plugged into 2 not 3 not 15 just 2. if that is the case about the network how do you explain the internet then
Post 31

like this:
it's not built entirely of ethernet.
idiot.
(also, managed switches, or switches implementing the spanning tree protocol are able to work around dipshits causing loops)
Post 32
yes we all agree the consensus around here is that im an idiot but lets keep the name calling to a minimum here please. im going to pm u paladin so this doesnt end up into a flame about me
Post 33
Upon entering dga and paying you are in effect hiring out one power outlet and one network port. for any reason you may require more then one please come and see an official, more then likely you will be granted your request.
As for multiple network cables into the one system it is not needed at all. 100mbit is more then enough to satisfy your gaming and file sharing needs. If for some reason 100mbit isn’t enough for you and you haft to HAVE a dual ethernet setup then talk to an event official requesting a 2nd port and if there is oodles of vacancies on your switch and we done see it causing any problems I’m sure you will be granted your request.
Asking for assistance on these issues will help eliminate power and network issues.
This isn’t directed at one person, it’s to all the people that use more then one network cable for the same computer.

not if its 100mbit shared by 10. we had 1 100mbit connection going into 1 switch which was used by 10 people. which is the reason we plugged 2 cables in.
next topic please
Post 35
The amount of ports available to a table represents how many ports and seats are available for that area. As was planned beforehand. Where do you get on and decide to change the network structure. Nobody should be plugging in more than a single ethernet connection for themselves. If you need more ports, see an admin first.

Actually it is ..
The problems occur when people start to leech .. heavy downloaders and uploaders is where all the bandwidth goes.
All you would have to do is talk to your table if nobody else was having problems and get them to stop leeching.
You can run a 10mbit network and have flawless gaming.
But then there is also the bottleneck effect of the switches.
But hey they did a good job for what they have.

There isn't any bottleneck when it's not messed with. All switches plug directly into the backbone. Which is what ended up happening with KIZAs stuff, we got a long enough cable and plugged it into the backbone.
Post 38
Anyways we all know now not to do that so lets be movin along ;)
Kiza my son next tiem you bring (or your boys) a switch can you see me b4 you even think about plugging it in, ta :)

okie dokie then

wouldn't be a foskey evo without the loop. theres been one at all of them so far ;)
Post 41
heheheh yerp is why we (actually OD) identified the problem and we had it fixed about 10 mins after that.
But after that we all got along coolies
Post 42
uhm, okay. clearly i mentioned it to the wrong admin then, because about 30 seconds after it started happening i told one of you there was a loop in their network. for future reference, who SHOULD i mention that to?

hahah go w00p  ok the one thing i was so impressed with was admin knowledge - man, i hadn't been to a LAN in many months - so my very limited personal wisdom was crap quite frankly. And all of my old mates who have now grown into shiny shirts that say DGA could help me :-D was sweet as, thanks you guys, made it a hella awesome lan :)
PS. As for the people that didn't pay, did anyone at all remember that awesome clip someone had at a lan years ago about the dude that cheated at CS over in the States somewhere? Please, tell me someone knows what happened... :)
Post 44
1 that was set up
and 2 they do that they would be sued..
But yes the guys PC and Monitor flying was nice .. Like how he picked up the shell and walked off :)
Post 45
Haha is that what happened I heard the admins all plugged into the gigabyte switch and ran the servers off the other 100.
Whatever the case theres always problems and you can only learn!!
Post 46
:|
right... well no. that's crazy talk.
Post 47
all admins were on a 16 port 10/100 switch, placed above the backbone.
