WTF! Category 4 cyclone from nowhere???

I don't know if it's just me but WTF!

Apparently there's a category four cyclone in QLD heading for the coast! It looped back, and formed into a category 4 in the space of what I think would be 24 hours!

Currently at 935hp's!

Some plots even have it heading into the gulf and over to the topend....

it was a very quick formation though.

So is this cyclone going to give us Darwin folk days of monsoonal rain?
Cause if its not then ill be upset and wont be taking any notice of the cyclone. The time for a cyclone to provide us with days of monsoonal downpours is way overdue and I’m not liking it one bit.

All these reports of it being stronger than cyclone Tracy what a load of BS ! How do they know how strong Tracy was when the gauge to measure the wind blew apart at the airport after winds of over 180kmph were recorded ???? It's almost like a competition to get a cyclone to be faster and more destructive than Tracy ! :mad:

What he's saying Doyen is that the gauge broke at 180k, so there is no telling how strong it actually got.

Like when the gauge broke, it's not like the winds said, 'whoa fella's the gauge broke, we'll just stay at the same velocity now'.

For the top end's sake, I hope its nothing like tracey in either case.

Interestingly, Darwin felt an earthquake 1 week before both Tracy and Thelma..... spooky!

anywho, if that thing bunny hops the QLD peninsula, then it could track the gulf all the way to probably groote eylandt and head inland towards Darwin.. it's happened before, and with this cyclone being so intense it could have the power to make it to Darwin as a Cat3+

For the record I was in Darwin when Tracy struck. The wind came in two bursts, one prior to the eye passing over us and then the second one after. The second lot of winds were by far the most destructive. The gauge at the airport broke in the first winds. Tracy was not a big cyclone in size but it was compact, very strong and it hit this town in such a way as though it's mission was to destroy Darwin. It succeeded. Most housing, 75% was destroyed. I got in my mates car to see my parents who lived only 2 km away and it took me 2 hours to get there because of the massive debris around. I too hope nobody eles experiences what we did on that Christmas eve 30 years ago. It's nature at it's most destructive worst. :-(

i've got quite a few albums of folders from tracy's cleanup.. and i know it doesn't do justice to experiencing it.. but these photos tell a devastating story.

I believe Tracy was a category 4.

It's a pity they only build housing, since Tracy, to category 3.

As was said with the wind guage, Tracy was only marked Cat4 cause the highest recorded speed puts it as a Cat4...in reality it was probably a 5

Speaking of cyclones and rain and such, anyone notice the new BOM rain intensity radar? ... Looks pretty schmick, a lot more detail.

I read alott into Darwin history there are alotta stories you wont find on musem walls i can imagine what it was like to find ppl that had been killed by flying debre, my friend savas service station was ripped to shreads but since then has been repaired an is still standing today in darwin city :) (Next to uncle sams).

What i saw in east timor would make any sane person physically sick an i know i never wanna see or smell that again and im sure seeing a site after a natural disaster would be exactly the same.

AFAIK, Tracy didn't rip large amounts of bitumen from the earth. If it did (I could quite easily be wrong) then, yes, it'd probably be a Cat 5.

Category 4 Cyclones don't have the ability to do that... (Haven't touched this type of reading for a long time now so I'm probably not remembering the details correctly... but yeh... I'm reasonably sure ;))

cape melville is going to be a flattened area today :( .. should be hitting them this arvo full force.

I could be wrong seqo, but isnt it tornados that suck up and tear bitumen up whislt cyclones just blow everything away?

I believe Tornadoes are able to do it easier as it is such a small point of contact between the wind and the road. Which is why it takes the highest category cyclones to do the same...

Wooo cyclone is heading Darwin way!! Was downgraded to 1, then has reintensified to a 2, hopefully gets bigger as well.

Big cyclone off the WA coast, but only cat 2, but is about 300km's in diametre :D.. woo...

Err make that about 400-500km's

well. i'm right so far..

i'm starting to think if it doesn't go inland it may go north and along the coast.

Models have it going along the coast - watch all the way to cape don atm.

even along the coast will give me a day off so Im happy :D

Oh yeah .. any models or tracks you guys have post them up ..

Previous 1 I looked at was it becoming a low and traveliing inland, but obvious thats out now.

Best guess it will head south once in the gulf & flood Katherine again.

JTWC has been hopeless with this cyclone to date (burks track) so I wouldnt take too much interest in it.

i couldn't find any others.. but yeah, that one looks like they just got a pencil and drew a line straight to Darwin.
