Stupid, stupid Melbournians

OK, so I was at college on the weekend (as usual) and I went to visit my friend a few rooms down from me. He is from Melbourne and a friend of his was up for the weekend visiting. We introduce ourselves and the conversation proceeds as follows:

The Melbournian: Hey, where are you from?

Me: I'm from Darwin

The Melbournian: Cool pause Don't they live underground up there?

Me: stunned pause No that's in Coober Pedy.

The Melbournian: OK

Me: In South Australia

The Melbournian: Ahhh...OK

And then I left but....wtf? Are we in the same country and on the same planet?

Anyway thats just my little rant.

I love explaining to Telstra and certain freight companies that "No, We are NOT Remote" and it shouldn't take them 5-7 days to PICK UP my laptop... stupid ignorant mexicans.

It's amazing what the perception of the NT (Esp. Darwin) is to others in the southern states. A friend of mine had a cousin in Perth that, when he came up here to visit, was surprised that we had bitumen roads...

*sigh

I suppose it doesn't help that i tell my melbournian cousins that everyone has crocs as pets and that we dont have bitumen roads and the airport runway is dirt :P

I get that a lot too... Not just from Melbourne people...

The best are Adelaide people, who live there and never been anywhere else, and have this opinion that Darwin sucks, and Adelaide is the best city in Australia.
Then they come to Darwin and realise just how much of a hole Adelaide really is compared.
Dont' get me wrong, Darwin may not be an awesome place, but it's a hell of a lot nicer then Adelaide.

And the roads up here rule compared.

I have conducted a long scientific study of women in different cities, with reference to universities.

So far the women at Adelaide University are bitumenised streets ahead of Charles Darwin University.

And as a state, WA produces the best University women.

I was refering to Darwin in regards to life style... Education is a completely different topic all together. Part of the reason I didn't school myself in Darwin.

I can't speak for Adelaide lifestyle, of course. I do love it here.

As for the anecdote at the top of the thread, I had similar experiences when I first arrived in Sydney.

meh, yes some people in melb dont know whats around them. But you go anywhere else and people wouldnt know about melb as much. Until you go and experience it, its hard to reinforce your thoughts. Thats why people love TV docco's, they dont need to leave and they get feed someone elses experiences on the place.

Ive been a few places and I would say that overall the lifestyle in Australia is a crapload better than a lot of other places. Narrowing it down I would say Perth is to the best place to live...its pretty relaxed like darwin but has more of an outdoor lifestyle as it has beaches you can actually swim at, + is not so hot.

Darwin is not too bad. Havent lived in Adelaide or Sydney before though. Comments from Sydney people?

Sydney's a whirlwind of opportunity and great times if you know where to look. However, its also cramped, fast-paced and money grabbing - guaranteed to give you its share of yuppie-crackheads on every corner, willing to sell you their 'get rich quick' schemes for a song. It's also backpacker central, you'd be hard-pressed to find a pub at night that doesn't have Irish folk songs being belched out in the background. :D

On the plus side, the night-life never stops. It's the city that never sleeps ;)

Ha yeh sounds like Melbourne..lived in Footscray for a while there and that was kinda fun as long as you got into the whole cafe culture / nightlife thing. If you didnt, well, its just mega traffic, smelly trains etc. Im getting too old for hitting the town now so ill leave city centre life to the younger generation..

Adelaide is a nice place.
Stayed there for a while, while on holidays.
Im very used to Darwins pace, so even Adelaide was too hectic for me. Cars everywhere !

Melbourne. Makes me want to murder people. Simply put.

how is darwin in terms of traffic?

in sydney, what should literally be a 15 min drive can often take up to an hour and a half in peak time.. no kidding..

Darwin doesn't have peak time traffic.

yeah we do. twice a day - the first one from about 7am to 8am, and the second one at about 4:30pm - 5:30pm.

fully makes my trip about, 5 minutes longer. is shocking.

Makes my trip... maybe, thirty seconds longer from Uni to home. Whoo.

Sometimes it's a bit of a bitch crossing a main road... but there's always a traffic light or a roundabout somewhere just up ahead that you can turn easily at..

heh, our highways grind to complete stop for two hours morning and afternoon. 110km/h zones become a parking lot as people road-rage their wage to and from work.

i swear, if our radio stations didn't have such amusing characters on at those times, homocide would be a more popular sport :P

Heh, one time at melbourne airport this guy asked where I was from. I said 'Darwin'. He gives me this blank look. Me: "It's in the NT"
Other guy: "Ahhh.. the interior"

I moved to Adelaide about 3 weeks ago for uni.
Upsides: nice ping, internode dlsam :-D , you can go to the footy/cricket more than once a year
Downsides: traffic, bad roads, too cold :p , and most importantly: no paul's iced coffee :-(
