I'm looking at finally getting a digital camera, not too sure of what I want, just want one that isn't too expensive (say around $200-300).

If anyone can suggest a camera or what spec's i should be looking for in a camera it would be greatly appreciated.

For the price you'd probably be looking at 3.2 - 4ish Megapixel, 3x Optical zoom etc.

Most DigiCams are good at certain price ranges: for the price you suggested - sony, canon, nikon, olympus, fuji and konica minolta are probably all comparable.

Find one that fits in with what you need (size, LCD dimensions, optical & digital zoom, resolution , whether you need comprehensive manual controls or not... etc) for the price you've outlined above.

For point and click I'd got for the Konica Minolta DiMAGE series (like the X31), very easy to use and picture quality is very high. Really good camera for photos of friends, family, get-togethers/parties etc.

For anything else (amateur photography)... close your eyes and pick. I reckon you can't go wrong with a Fuji Finepix camera or a Canon Powershot or Ixus. The Nikon Coolpix cameras are also top notch, as are the Olympus MJU-300's.

Never been a fan of sony digicams but they are good nonetheless. if you can find a Cyber Shot DSCP43 or 73 they will probably do the same job.

Thanks for the post's guys, gonna go out today and have a look, hopefully i find one I like :)

EDIT: Looking at the Canon A95 (decided to lash out and spend a bit more), Scorptec have it for $455, went to Ted's and Dick Smiths, both rip off's, will probably try Target, Myer and so on, but looks like Scorptec is the cheapest.
