ok im just wondering how many thing i can run off a single power point, cause in my bedroom ive got a 1hp aircon and a comp + monitor +51cm tv and ps2 all running off a single power point which im guessing isnt good but ive got no where else to really get any power from, i believe the circuit is a 10 amp curcuit that runs both my room and another room which atm is unoccupied i was just wondering how much i could run off just this one power point please help!!

You will need to get someone in to replace your existing PowerPoint with a 4 Port Powerpoint.

Here is some info about Safety of PowerPoints at home....

Electric shocks can be caused by damaged electrical cords and plugs and improper use of powerboards.

* Keep extension cords away from hot objects - appliances like toasters and irons can burn through the cord's insulation.
* Check electrical cords and plugs regularly for fraying or other damage and replace if necessary. Most appliance repairers only charge a nominal fee to replace cords/leads on irons and toasters.
* Don't place cords under rugs where they can be walked on.
* Don't overload powerpoints - most powerpoints are designed for 2,400Watts (10amps)
* Don't use more than one double adaptor per powerpoint - use a powerboard with overload protection instead.
* Put safety covers on unused powerpoints and don't let children play around powerpoints.

well the most ive ever had running on it at one time has been the aircon and computer so it hasnt been really pushed so far and ive only jusy put the tv in here like yesterday but i believe it was still running on the same circuit :S not really sure

i have 5 reasonably power hungy comps (all 450+ watt power supplies because 350's keeps dieing, if that makes a difference) computers, aircon and various other little things.....and i share with kitchen (on a 15 amp line)....will be getting my own 10 amp line soon but due to multiple blackouts

well thats allright but my problem is not quite as bad as it could be because soon some ones moving into the other room that runs on the same circuit as mine and that room also has an identical aircon to mine +plus may be running another computer in there so i was wondering if i was pushing it now cause then i would really consider gettin a quote on a whole new circuit being put in the rooms

Not only electrical shocks, but more common that is a great way to start a fire.

A powerpoint that draws more current than it's rated for will overheat and/or melt down (eventually) causing a fire. This happens at night while you're asleep, or sometime when you're not home, and kiss goodbye all that stuff in your room/house.

Feel the power cords some time when you're at the next DGA.

One powerpoint ONLY for the airconditioner - the rest of the stuff is fine by itself on ANOTHER SEPARATE powerpoint.

well thats sorta gunne be difficult cause that involves me gettin off my ass and finding the old 10 m extension and running that from the spare room and into mine which will be a bitch cause itll have to go right across the hallway :(

Well if that's more difficult than having to get off your arse and go out and buy stuff to replace what you lose, go for it.

the hard bit is finding the cord cause the only other extension chords i have around here are only 3 metre cords and ill need about 3/4 just to get to my room but thats no good and i have no idea where we put the 10m cord last time i saw it was when i lent it to some one like 3 years ago so i might have to buy a new one but would anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get a new circuit installed to 2 bedromms both 15 amp circuits?

You'll probably find yourself hitting a circuit breaker and blacking out when your using too much power... it happens in our kitchen when we try to use the toaster, kettle and microwave all at the same time... the whole thing shorts and circuit breaker turns off that part of the house...

or you could pay an electrician to put in a new circuit breaker (if you have room in ure current switchboard) and running the aircon seperately on that. The reasoning is because an aircon constantly turns on and off, and everytime it turns on it pulls a whopping great amount of power. Just another option thats all

or just replace the circuit breaker with a 1/4" bolt ... mind you make sure the house insurance is up to date

lolwell i was considering getting a quote on gtting 2 new circuits installed one 15 amp to my room and maybe another 15 amp to the other room cause of the aircons

hahahaha we had to do that at my dads place had 3 pc's 2 aircons washing machine fridge dry tv few little things adsl modem router xbox all off 1 curcuit and i could have everything running id chuck some washing in the washing machine *BANG* flicked the curcuit breaker :D lol..

Just by replacing the circuit breaker may not fix your problem. I've seen people replaced the circuit breaker to a higher ampage type but then burn out the wiring in the house = dangerous if you like starting a house fire. Check what maximum ampage your house wiring can handle will be a good start. If your ampage use is grater than the wiring can handle in that room maybe route a new wire from the switch board & place another power outlet in your room.

Watts / Volts = Amps

450wPSU/ 240V = 1.875 Amps
(Note 450W is at full capacity which most computers don’t actually run at)
Or you can cheat & use a current meter to check each appliance total current draw & then add them all up. :)

I say a maximum of 4 or 5 computers to one outlet (including monitors) also a good idea is not to switch them all on the say time.

PS : Don’t plug your computer on the same outlet as your airconditioner or fridge. You will get constantly power surges when the compressor starts & stops.

well the aircon never starts and stops the compressor it just keeps it going cause its set to get really cold :D but i think ill get 2 new circuits put in, both with new wiring considering the house is like almost 18 years old so i think the wiring wouldnt be able to handle more than 10 amp? any way gunna get a quote for that and see how much

If you want your aircon to run constantly it's easy, just remove the thermostat. :)

... just install smoke detectors so u know when your conductor has exceeded its max current carrying capacity... then u have time to run and save your computer :)

I don't know much about this sort of thing (suffice to say keep your fridges and aircons on different things to everything else) but I would be safe then sorry. I know it's hard work getting up and doing something, or paying someone, but that beats regretting having to do those things.

Check the size of the Circuit Breaker that feeds your room (probably does multiple rooms of your house). That will give you the Max Current you have available to run your air con and your computer in your room and any other rooms supplied by that Circuit Breaker (C/B for average power circuits range from 10amp / 16amp / 20amp).

Dont remove the Thermostat from your Air Con as this will only stuff it because if it has no cut out it will only Ice up and not work.

Smoke detectors are a good idea but if your Cicuit Breaker does'nt Trip before your wiring catches on fire you are in trouble.
