When at 9:30 CST - the ABC predicts a 12.1% swing to the CLP, more than 20% swing against the Opposition Leader, and a 30% swing to the ALP in my electorate of Daly. Only one thing can be said.

A great result for the ALP and a crushing defeat for the CLP. If the CLP are wise they'll learn from this and look at it as an opportunity to start over with a clean slate, although I think now it won't be long before the CLP disappears and then re-emerge as the Liberal Party NT.
If they have a good, long think and refocus themselves they might be in a position to mount a realistic challenge come the 2013 election.

Not surprising that just about 80% of the Territory hates Burke...i do and someone in my family was actually part of the party at one stage, and if i think he is a wanker what do the rest of the territory think?
DVC i think your right, there very little hope of the CLP of existing in the state it's in, hopefully the Feds can step in and make things a little bit more professional and brighter for the future of the territory. Lets not get too carried away here, a one party government isnt democracy, Labor needs CLP and CLP needs labor.

For me personally, the only reason CLP got my vote was simply because of my personal hate of Clair Martin and her campaigning (even before the lead up to the election). She strikes me personally as a self involved egotistical maniac.
At the same time, I feel the same way about Dennis Burke but a little less strongly.
This election was simply a case of picking the least stinking piece of shit, and unfortunately, they were so close it was too hard to really tell.
In any case, we can look forward to another four years of Claire Martins face on every second page of the NT News, with very little REAL achievement.

On a personal point re: her dealing with skills shortage in Australia, local business has been dealing with it since it became a major issue themselves, without the benifit of government input.
If they want to help, make the bludgers at immigration actually do some work, or if they're overworked, get more there so we CAN get these skilled people in at a shorter period of time. Also, make sure the people hired aren't self important pricks.

I do think that a second stint in the wilderness might be able to shake out some of the rusted-on uglies in the party, so that'd be a plus. I don't think the Liberals could be arsed to set up shop in the NT. Why would they?

I've said this before but I think that both parties need to sack their campaign workers because they both sucked ass this year... It was so immature the way it was done this year... I've seen more mature fights between two squabbling 6 year olds...
I don't really care about NT politics because its all the same shit (literally). I just hope they'll get some sense into their heads and promise things that really matter like giving me a new computer :D

It's a case of supply and demand, I suppose. With the disintegration of the CLP there's a now a lot of disenfranchised conservative voters -- the same people who kept the CLP in power for 27 years, and the ones who turned their backs on the current CLP on Saturday night.
I think parties like the Libs and the Nats would be looking at venturing here knowing that if they present themselves as willing to meet that demand for a conservative party then quite a few people will vote for them. I'd say a large portion of that 12% of the Territory that swung to Labor didn't just wake up on Saturday morning suddenly loving the ALP. My guess is that many of them were traditional CLP voters who just knew they couldn't in good conscience vote for Denis Burke.

Shane Stone's analysis was pretty compelling though: if the Libs move in, so will the Nats. There'll be a few diehards who stick with the CLP. So you'll have a three-way contest for any conservative vote, increasing the chances the people will say "That mob can't get their house in order - f**k 'em, I'll vote Labor again I guess".
I mean look at other states. There's Libs and Nats in most places and it just doesn't work out very well.
Furthermore, people aren't stupid. They'll realise that a Liberal branch is the CLP with a new name. It won't change the members, it won't change the policies. The CLP needs to win back trust the old fashioned boring way by not sucking.
Generally voters make the right decision. It looks like the CLP did not deserve to return to government, and the CLP needs to deal with it.

I hope the CLP just puts it's head down and gets on with the job(all politicians job's for that matter), of doing their best for their electorates, rather than wasting more money analysing the whole scenario which has been over analysed enough. Maybe people are reading too much into this latest election, by sounding the death knell of the CLP.
