I'd like to know just how many people will own up to this...

Post 2

how many people withdrew $20, got $50, and immediately withdrew their limit afterwards, requesting $20 notes?

Post 3

people dumb enough to not know they will be caught and liable to return the money proberly are too dumb to think of that in the first place :)
if that makes sence

Post 4

If everyone that benefitted from the error were to deny it, there is no way the bank is going to take them all to court to recover the money.
I doubt they would want that kind of publicity.

On the other hand, banks are bastards.

Post 5

lol its just like accidently transfering money to someone elses account if the person declines giving the money back jack you can do about it :S

Post 6

Yeah I always find things like this stupid.. Bank fcks up.. should cop it, im with Jug.. bastards :p

But on the other hand, I do understand why they'd want it back.. but still im sure it wasn't much, to a bank that is.. no idea on the capacity of an ATM, but 100 people x ("000 a day / 20 x 50) would be $250k and no way theres that much in an ATM at any one time. By the sounds of it I doubt it was emptied.

But what can you do.. "selects $20, 40, 60, 80".. spits out 50s... hmm what to do now, bank not open, cant get to one, god knows.. I bet most were unintentional (sp?)

I wish to god somebody had told me about this - I was there yesterday getting lunch. Got out my eftpos card, thought about the fees, saw the queue at the machine, and just paid on VISA.

Damn...

Post 8

Thats wrong I think buddy.

My work overpaid me 9K one week...took the buggers 2 weeks to find out and I had to give it back :(

Also we have deposited into an incorrect account on ebay and the bank just took it back out and reversed it no questions.

Post 11

If you overpaid a bank(obviously not savings), they would make it hard as possible to get your money back, i say do the same and make them work for it if they want it back. Just deny it at first and see how hard they persue.

But yeah if there are no legal implications(as the story suggests), tell them to get stuffed. If they want the money back, they should dock the poor employee who's probably getting reemed over this as we speak. Harsh i know.

Post 12

it was a contractor..

bet they don't get any more contracts with that bank...

Post 13

if your work over pays you of course they are gonna get there money back or you'll get fired LOL

but if a jo blow accidently gives you $500 then stiff nothing they can do there is a 35% chance to get your money back trust me i've tried it i was doing net banking pay bills for the business i was on the phone not paying attention i accidently paid "50 to someone and thank god it ended up being myself i sent it to my bank sa account LOL

it costs you $35 to retrieve your money but they said no guarrente and you have to wait 24 hours to find out if you ****ed up or not LOL.

Thats a new one...haha

There is always the time where you recieve the wrong change, instead of "0.00 they give you $20.00, not paying attention to what they are doing!

Post 16

or when you sell a $5 hotdog to a drunk american, they pay with a $50, and walk off without collecting change

Post 17

It's the bank's money, and the bank has a record of every transaction made. There are contracts which govern these situations and I expect that the relevant bank will simply go through all transactions for that day and adjust them to the appropriate amounts.

Note that those people who expected $50 notes were getting $20 notes, so when the bank has finished up things will probably even out somewhat.

You'd have to be a moron to think you'd actually get one over a bank on an ATM, of all highly-monitored things.

The people should charge administration fees and take 5 working days before the bank can access the money.

They'll quickly discover that the bank didn't sign a contract with those terms.
