I had a 4GB iPod mini for about 3 months before I lost it, and was looking around the Apple site when I found the iPod nano. It's pretty much the same as the iPod mini, only it has a colour screen and is about half the weight and thickness. The best part is, it's only $60 more than an iPod mini ($360) and if you want the 2GB iPod nano, you'd be paying about $300.
The thing is, I'm going to Japan in October, and I'm trying to save $500 for spending money, as well as $200 for a digital cam to take there. It's a 15 hour flight, so I'm hoping I can borrow some money from my mum or something so I can have both :) Anyway, enough of my ranting. That's the iPod nano, and that was the point of my thread.
i have a few questions does the ipods got fm radio? what about these nano things? i kinda want one, but im too lazy to read up on them and im going to get a k750i and i thin they have fm radio.
so what other cool things can ipods do beside play music?
They're pretty cool. They were sold out on the launch here in Japan... Hugely popular, though they do look good.
Can I suggest Brooke, you'll probably want to save more money if possible for spending. There's so much stuff over here that you just want, but I guess that's one way to control the spending. :p

The nano has radio (Triple J, 2DayFM, Nightline, SBS Worldview) called Podcasts, although I'm not too sure how it works :/ Nano features

I'm going with school, so we have a $500 spending money limit :( I was told that I shouldn't get an iPod in Japan because their wattage is way different and the hard drive would be in Japanese, which is a bit of a hassle if you want to get it repaired.
hmmm, i'm about to order one, but dunno whether to get black or white, i'm edging towards black, but would rather see them in the shop first, anybody seen them yet?

I've only ever seen photos. I'd get black if I end up buying one. Can you let me know what you think of it, e.g. the good and bad sides to using it?
My mum said this morning she'd buy me the nano for an early birthday present, so now all I have to pay for is the digital cam :D

Podcasts isn't really radio. It's just radio that has been recorded and made available for download. You have to download the Podcasts onto you iPod to listen.
However, due to copyright laws, there is usually no music on them, meaning the whole thing is really just one big talkfest.

Apple are very anal about internation purchases even if it has internation warranty you usally have to contact apple in the country you bought it from and put through a job to the australian apple shops and i can tell you right now you will have to send it down south as the apple repair center in darwin is closing, unless someone else takes up the contract which i doubt no monies in warranty jobs.
Student discount is good if you willing to fill out the forms fax off a copy of your student card ect its really not worth it unless you buying a $3000 system :S.
and anyone buying an apple ipod my suggestion is pay for extended warranty in the long run its worth it when the internal batteries F@#% up your looking at "80 for new batteries :S
Korny, if you broke an IPod you'd have to send it down south anyway... Hell, they'd just send it overseas again anyway.
Because the Nano has no moving parts, it's not likely to break even when falling, though a hard throw may cause some serious damage.
As for warrenty, the Ipod is covered under an international warrenty simply because of the type of unit it is. I have a 2nd gen 20gig Ipod, and I've never had a problem with it, and I bought it in HK of all places.
Add to that, the Nano is an item that really, if you managed to smash it, it'd probably not be worthwhile repairing it anyway, I see it dropping price again soon enough anyway.
And as for Japanese Language, I wouldn't worry about that, all Nano's are the same, as are all Ipods, regardless of which country, you simply choose the language you wish to use. The power adapter will be, like all Ipods, 100-250v compatible, meaning you can use it in Japan and Australia no worries (just double check on the power adapter though before plugging it into an Aus power plug). In any case, if it isn't, it's not really a hassle anyway. And with the current price in Japan, you won't be doing too badly with the exchange rate.
i thought these sorta things usually charge off firewire and require you to spend extra money to buy a charger... You could probably just charge it off firewire until a charger comes out for it...

Well I know the 4th Gen Ipods can charge off firewire and USB2, firewire being the fastest only just. Also got a power adapter with my 20gb ipod.
I like the nano too, looks good. Just a bit small on the storage side of thing for my liking. For music only it'd be perfect.

battery ****up, or battery dying from improper recharging etc?
and a $37 discount for filling out a couple of forms isn't a pain in the arse at all in my books
brook: no they don't do duty free, but my last ipod mini i bought from duty free and it was $270 (RRP300)...

My friend cracked the screen of my mini with her electric guitar. I was told it would be too expensive to get it repaired, and it would take ages for it to come back, because they would have to send it overseas :(
Are they much cheaper in Japan? And when I got my mini, I didn't get a power adaptor with it. Don't they use the two-prong connection thing?
Yeah, they use two pronged 115v standard.The problem is that Ipods aren't meant to be pulled apart... No screws, no easily accessible open points. That's why fixing them is not really the norm.
They're not THAT much cheaper... I certainly wouldn't worry about the price difference if you can get a 4 gig for 350 or less.
they have a repair center in darwin you take the ipods to and they send them down south, but when this center closes the owner will have to pay to send it :S
by the way i bought my ipod 60 gig $430 discount :)
but i didnt pay the $430 it was given to me for the ipod as a birthday gift.

Well I lashed out and purchased the nano. I purchased it after I heard about the screen scratching so I'm well aware, not to mention at the moment there are no covers for it for sale only the arm bands.
If my screen gets scratched and I can't see the screen I can easily return it on warranty unless its by my own fault of course. But the Nano is pure sex :)
