Not exacly what you are after but i just did this
Bought a laptop harddrive and got a external 2.5" hdd enclosure for it.
The enclosure itsself is quite cheap 25-35 bucks maybe and you can pick up a 40gig lappy hdd for around "00.
Great thing is that its usb/firewire and it DOSNT need external power like 3.5" ones do.
Im totally happy with it as i pass it around to my mates and saves buring cd's.
cool!
can you get then any bigger than 40GIG??
any model reccommendations?
Hitachi. and the biggest is 100GB for a couple of hundred. maybe near $300.
ouch.
I'll look at getting the 40GB one soon.
i use one of these....

very handy and are even smaller size than a laptop hdd
40GB model also available.

The biggest is 120Gb 2.5" Momentus from Seagate, but i'd be expecting to pay near $400 retail for it.
Alternatively you could look at an external hdd enclosure and buy an IDE hdd for it...
http://www.pccasegear.com.au/prod2395.htm - $65
And then the IDE HDD:

The upside to this is that later when you no longer have much use for the external HDD you can just chuck it in your system and have it permanently there as storage :)
This is very similar to Knight's idea except its proper normal HDDs :)
This is all you need.

I use this and that way the only limitation is the HDD I've got laying around.
Watch out with the 3.5" cases, some have a limtation of 200GB.
