So much I hated and loved...
What I hated:
* The usual shit I normaly hate about soccer - whinging - dis-respect - diving.. If they cut that out, the sport might even have a chance in this country - especially after games like that. Karma.
* The Uruguay coach - i mean - what a **** - he THREW a ball at the head of one of our guys trying to take a throwin.... no class - shoot the guy.
What I loved:
Man - so close and so much passion... We DOMINATED the game. We were getting fouled and taken out all over the place - I counted 3 times where there should've been a corner and there was a goalkick - but we kept with it... and it came down the a shootout. Karma man....
Good on em I say. And to the nay-sayers - support your country or ****off, I don't want to hear from you.

This is our best socceroos team for a long time.
While it took Ferrina years to achieve nothing, it takes our new coach Guus Hiddink a matter of months to qualify us into the World Cup.
Our boys will be ready the coach will make sure.
Now all we need to do is hope for a weak bracket and slaughter all the teams that dont have to qualify through South America :)

3. i know everyone misses chances, but the amount of times we should have scored isnt funny. i've never seen so many badly kicked corners for a long time. and wasnt the Uraguay team a sorry sight.
The game was exciting because it was a qualifier and went down to the wire and we got in thats great, it means they will televise alot more of it compared to if we werent in it, but how many people that watched the game last night actually know the A league exisits? let alone watch it.
What happend last night is good for the game here, maybe we might get some games on TV =)

korea had home advantage and considering the weather that was prevalent during the last world cup that advantage became significant.. to compare australias current circumstances to that is overly hopeful. That weather was significant enough that 3 out of the top 5 favourites to win the whole cup were eliminated in their first groups (france, argentina, portugal).
Good on em for making it. But dont put too much expectations on their shoulders theyve already done great just to make it. But yeah this is the world game the reason why so many people love it is because anything CAN happen so lets just wait and see how far they can take it.
as for the acting.... both sides did it and everyone in soccer does it so get over it. If they dont act the ref wont call the foul the fact that they exagerate the impact doesnt mean it wasnt a fould in the first place.

we have plenty of soccer to watch on pay TV every A-League game is live. Fox show english soccer ESPN have soccer from Italy, spain, USA and the World cup qualifiers where aslo shown.

btw We're GOING TO GERMANY and no amont of ill informed whining posts will change that. The FFA did what ever it took to give the boys a real chance at making it (see charted flight, while U R GAY came here in ecomomy). We booed during their anthem, we booed them when they were warming up, we did everything we could to help.
The boys repaid our support by running their asses of and giving 100% all game. Be proud of the fact that we have finally made it after 32 years to the BIGGEST sporting event in the world. They will do us proud in Germany and WE should/will be greatfull.

How are they over-paid? It's the biggest sport in the world, and the FIFA World Cup is second only to the Olympics when looking at spectator participation and international coverage. There is the financial means to pay their players better, so why not?
Look at it this way; it would be hardly fair if a sport like the AFL became one of the worlds biggest sports, and everyone involved started stumbling across biggest piles of money... except the the financial relief of rising profits weren't passed onto the players.
Big sport = big dollars. It's really as simple as that.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the sport, give me a game of Cricket or Union any day, but the above is just an obvious truth. It's business.

Well, I was done posting in this thread until I read this. Maybe you failed to notice that when evidence was provided to the contrary of what I believed, I rescinded my opinion on their status as a 'National' team.
People like you Redwynne, need to realise that there is precedent for non-natives to play for adopted countries. Cases that readily spring to mind are Kevin Pietersen playing cricket for England, despite being born in South Africa, Kepler Wessels playing cricket for Australia, despite being born in South Africa (indeed, he eventually went back and played for South Africa too) and Tony Greig playing cricket for England, despite being natively South African. So please, get your facts straight before shooting off your gob.
As for my stance on soccer being an "over-paid" sport, I have a personal distaste for people who play a sport for love of the money, rather than love of the team they're playing for, and it seems to me, a very casual outside observer, that soccer players chase money. Maybe that's a bit hokey in this day and age, where the majority of professional players, and up-coming professional players are forgoing any other sorts of qualifications to play a sport for a few years, and hopefully earn enough to last the rest of their lives - but I don't care, I don't have to like it.

Any comment I made thereafter regarding non-natives was based on my above definition, and as a direct rebuttal of your completely ignorant statement, as quoted above. All of the names I quoted in my reply (Kevin Pietersen, Kepler Wessels, Tony Greig), are people who (by my above definition) played sport for a country they were not natives of.
My original position in this thread was based off the assumption that the Australian team contained players that were encouraged to immigrate here because they can play soccer. Apparenly that's wrong, I'm happy to admit a mistake.

Rather than selectively reading my posts and ignoring the qualifications contained therein, perhaps you should address the entire comment. I acknowledged that my issue is not with the pay-level as such, as much as it is the dilution of loyalty. To me, sports ARE about loyalty.
A fairer comparison would be, if I were earning $X at a corporation that I enjoyed working for, and was offered $X + 10% to work for a corporation that I had no particular feelings toward, would I take the offer? The answer is, probably not. As X gets higher, the increase becomes more meaningless.
Can loyalties be bought? absolutely. Can mine? absolutely. Going from a salary of $50k/yr to a 7 figure salary is a big enough incentive for me, but how often do you see professional sportsmen shuffled around between teams with salary increases of around 2000%?
Don't compare apples to oranges.

Tell you what, I'm sure that qualifying game had almost nothing to do with the money for the players. It really is about being proud of Australian soccer, something we've lacked.

And Im just refuting your earlier claim that "we specifically allowed people citizenship so they can play soccer for us" by saying that the socceroos were born here. Maybe I should have added for those clearly more ignorant than I, that even if they arent born here and have made Australia their home (that is grew up here and became an aussie citizen) then they should be allowed to represent their country regardless of whether they are "native" or not.
