Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my computer this weekend and I was wondering which pc stores in Darwin actually have high end stuff in stock. I don't want to wait around for parts to arrive as I want to play this weekend :)

Just FYI i'm after dual core stuff and atleast 7800gt preferably 7900gtx :)

Post 2

Good luck.. if you do find one that dosent over charge you post it here

Post 3

not in darwin man lets see there is a few shops around but none stock high end parts the only place i would go in the nt is computers for you as i seen a few 7800 series cards in there the other day you may be lucky there.
but apart from that no idea.

Post 4

Whatever you do, do not give business to Harvey Norman, Darwin.

The computer help people there are terrorists, I must openly declare.

Post 5

yeah, i dont know of any store in darwin that keeps stock and the cost compared to online is just stupid. cut price computers told me for most of the parts i was looking for, they get them wholesale at the same prices i can get them on teh net.

edit; yeah zpc, i applied for a job and they asked my my certificate of course completion for one of the internationally recognised JI training camps. I said i had a swimming certificate but they wouldnt accept that. :(

Post 6

lol high end pc components in darwin retail? i wish...

Post 7

Thought this was the case..

Looks like I'll have to wait a week :( Might go check out Computers for you just incase.

Thanks for all the speedy replies, seems like a touchy subject :)

Post 8

I agree - Harvey Norman are retarded beyond belief.

Was best combination of price and value for money when setting up Velocity.

They did a good deal on shipping for us, though we did spend a few dollars with them...

Service was excellent, knowledgable and professional.

No I am not getting any kickbacks, just stating commercial truth.

Harvey Norman sucked hairy dog balls. I went and saw them in person about four times with specific questions and requests for quotes. I think they got back to me via email once with a question about what monitor I wanted. Service was F**KING awful. Yes I know this is one business commenting on another business and yes there are rules about slander, but what I say is the truth 100%. They can sue my arse. It still won't make their service any better.

Paladin (of this very board) provided brilliant help to me in the form of quotes and presenting the argument to my boss for AMD and his quote from Omega was my personal choice out of about four or five quotes that I received. My boss chose the pentium path, though I had become somewhat convinced of the AMD benefits. This is a real to and fro. What's better? Holden or Ford?

The dude at Cut Price practically spat on me when I asked him for a quote after I told him I had already spoken to Paladin. "Yeah I know who he is," was his response. He wouldn't even do me a quote based on the fact that I DARED to look at online suppliers to source Velocity computers from.

He blustered and moaned about, "local support" and "backup service". The GS116 Netgear switch blew up under warranty. Netgear replaced it, from Sydney, in a week. He made me feel like a criminal for seeking the best financial situation for Velocity.

I have every sympathy for people in a static retail environment competing against online suppliers, I honestly do. Earlwin at Computer Info in Cavenagh Street was just as helpful and informative as Paladin was and so I have to give him Kudos for that. They seem to have stuff in stock there. Leading Edge at the Homemaker Village have been excellent each time I have spoken to them about bits and pieces for both business and personal computer needs.

However, most of Velocity's equpiment was sourced online.

Why would I pay a rude, spiteful local business owner an extra $200.00 for any given piece of equipment when I can get it online cheaper?

Ecconomic reality. Manners and polite protocol go a long way with me, and probably with many other people, but in the end, there is no reward for doing anything except getting the cheapest price for any given piece of equpiment is there?

Oh, just some posible useless information that probably amounts to little more than opinion...

I looked into dual core for Velocity.

Doesn't seem to be widely supported enough yet to make the extra cost worthwhile.

Better off waiting for next gen dual core CPUs and games/software for better value for money.

Do a simple calculation of cost per CPU divided by GHz processing power to get an indication.

As I say, this, like almost anything to do with anything, is just an opinion. Like any decision, get some facts, get away from everything and everyone and take a quiet moment to think, then, go with your gut.

Post 12

Got a dualcore - love it. Go back to the highest end CPU (singlecore) and with the amount of programs I run for work I really notice the slowdown. Dualcore all the way.

Post 13

Exactly what is it OD?

Post 14

Amd X2 4600+

Post 15

Worth it on a cost comparison basis?

cut price was actually a customer of ours also, so yeah i can understand him being a little annoyed, but whatever, it's a cutthroat market. in the long run, although it would have been good for me at the time, it worked out better for you not going through us, on account of omega shutting up shop approximately a month later. further for the record, the quote i provided you was at approximately 27% markup from memory ;)

You did good work man. Shame it didn't work out on many levels.

I know parts are a hell of alot cheaper on the net but I didn't mind paying extra to support a local business. The only problem is no business has really 'won' me with service. I'd like to have a chat with someone (a professional) about what parts to buy and what solution is best for me (not what parts they want to clear from stock).

Anyways until a pc superstore with great support comes along it looks like I'll be net shopping. Oh and I'll probably just head down to Velocity this weekend :D

My Pc is the basis of my income as well as my gaming hobby, so the former made it worthwhile.

Post 20

Also I will post up what parts I'm looking at getting tonight. I could do with a few opinions.

We like that idea. Haven't seen you for a while. I was starting to worry that you might have been led astray by some big bad wolf somewhere...

:D

You are a smart lad. Gather some information for yourself and process it yourself. Most computer information is opinion which is a shameful truth about technology that is meant to be 100% rational and logical!

Just make sure you do avoid the phenomena you mentioned above.... businesses "clearing stock". Well spotted.

i have a 4600+, i got it basically the day they were out, which is to say i paid (wholesale) over a grand for it, and yes, it was worth it :)

Cool. It's good to pump as much as you can into a single personal system.

Setting up ten machines of course means than an extra "00 for any single piece of equipment or component is "000 extra overall!!!

Big concern for setting up Velocity.

Biggest price component was the 256Mb 7800GT cards of course... tad over $600 each...

But when I sit down to 1600x1200 BF2... it somehow seems worthwhile...

Just keep in mind that you will get a lot of opinions.

Still, share the information. The truth is more likely to come out if everyone is making informed choices and comments.

Post 26

Are u interested in a PCI-E leadtech winfast 7800GT extreme edition? A few months old, still under warranty, $450?

Post 28

i found cut price ok. i was looking for a case and ended up getting a quote for my whole comp. the guy then told me why to not get high end ram, cause the difference between branded ram and generic is minimal... and then tried to sell me some generic ram for $200 more than i could get the branded ram for. sure support local business, i'ld get my case from there if they stocked it (cause the shipping cost for those would be massive) but to get my comp locally would add a grand onto the price...no thanks

Post 29

keep in mind, cut price was a stationary store until they figured there was money in them there computer things.

Post 30

Cut Price has always struck me as a little on the clueless side when it came to actual technical knowledge.

Post 31

Could try Computers for you, they seemed to have a reasonable selection of instock vid cards when i was there this week. Not sure on price comparison though, but its got to be beter to go back and see the guy you brought it from in the first place, rather than speaking to a drone interstate on the matter.
As for Cut price Computers..... any store that would not even let a potential buyer open the side of the case to inspect its innards for a specific requirement without a promisary note of purchase for the privellege, wont be getting my recomendation or business.

Post 32

Wow - talk about anally retentive o_0 I wonder if someone should point out that not all case insides are exactly the same.

.... are you serious???

Post 34

IMO i have never found cut price to be cut price...quite the contrary.

Darwin is a town you pretty much buy everything(cars, computers etc) from down south if you want to save money. Good service in Darwin is almost nonexistant, so don't feel bad about going south for your business.

Post 35

I knew a good computer shop once.. FITS :( wehres dazza when you need him

Post 36

Quote from paladin:

27% from Omegas buy price, or 27% from their reseller price list???

Post 37

i reckon i saw a 7800 on the shelf at computers for you in nightcliff today

Post 38

leading edge seemed to have a reasonable range also

Post 39

Quote from jabsy:

from our buy. a little over double what i'd generally quote for resellers.

Post 40

pick up phone book, go to computers ring numbers and ask them what they have. simple, saves time and fuel money.

while your at it can i have my hdd back, i miss it :(

Post 42

Have brought parts of everyone in darwin - Frontline IT was good, but they gone. Bits and bytes were good - but they are also gone......

What is meant to be customer service is mostly lacking in most businesses, but as mentioned earlier Erwin/Earlwin (?? thought it was erwin...) in Computer Info was very helpful when last used.

Would probably buy more stuff of Computers for you, but i have a thing about paying between 50-100$ markup on items( mind you they have to pay for freight, bills and staff somehow) so should probably support them more

As for swamp rat askin if Cut Price used to sell stationary - they used to be called Cut Price Stationary around a year ago ;) (unless i missed the sarcasm)

Brought my case from them and everything else ive got from oline resellers cheaper, exactly what you want (not something that is close), but just means you may have to wait 3 days for overnight freight :-)

Post 43

Yep im all in agreeance of buying locally for warranty and face to face returns etc, but not at the cost of eating for a fortnight to pay for it.

Post 44

When I want something in a hurry (eg my power supply just died and I need a new one now) I see erwin at Computer info or see the guys at Computers for you. Have gotten some very misleading information from leading edge in the past I go there as my last stop before I give up and visit auspcmarket.com.au as they ussaly have stuff in stock.

Post 45

I can only recommend Rex now.

www.pcmaniacs.com.au

Small part from the about page

Why buy from us?

PC MANIACS is owned and operated by Rex "Maniac" Hall in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. Rex is a true computer enthusiast, always playing the latest games and finding ways to make these games look better and run faster. The only way to do this is with the best hardware available (and then overclocking it).

I always get the answers I want and quick service.

Post 46

yeah PC maniacs has some really good prices on the top quality overclocker and enthusiast gear... They used to be called hardly normals before they got in trouble and had to change their name... Another good site is www.nintek.com.au because they have competitive prices, all the good quality gear and often run specials for those that have been OCAU forum members for longer than 90 days (have access to trading forums).
