Australia named ecstasy capital

AUSTRALIANS are the biggest users of ecstasy in the world by a wide margin and the drug is becoming more popular by the day, prompting European syndicates to plan larger smuggling operations.

A series of police intelligence reports obtained by The Australian cite intelligence and UN figures on drug use, showing that ecstasy is becoming mainstream and that supplies of the drug are not being hindered by action to crack down on syndicates importing and manufacturing the dangerous party drug.
The reports indicate the market for the drug is highly lucrative for organised crime with Australians paying more for ecstasy than in traditional markets such as Europe.

They all point to the UN World Drug Report that has named Australians as first in the world for ecstasy use and second for amphetamine use.

Almost twice as many Australians use ecstasy (3.4 per cent) as the next-highest nationality, the British (2.0 per cent).

In an underlined section in a report on synthetic drugs, NSW police admit that the combined efforts of Australian law enforcement agencies have been unable to put a dent in the availability of ecstasy.

"Australia and Oceania may not yet have seen the peak in MDMA (ecstasy) consumption and with the growing supply from the Asian region there appears no problem with availability," the report says.
The NSW Crime Commission says there seem to be no barriers to getting ecstasy in Australia: "European organised crime groups (particularly from Britain, The Netherlands, Belgium and Israel) are targeting Australia for large-scale importations of ecstasy tablets, millions of pills at a time, due to the high profitability of the Australian market."

An AFP report on the syndicates describes them as operating "in a manner similar to that employed by multinational companies". One syndicate did cost-benefit analyses on ecstasy that took into account how foreign exchange rates would affect the smuggling operation.

The NSW Crime Commission and the AFP say the syndicates are increasingly competitive with low-quality locally operations stealing their market share. The reports say they are investing in expensive pill presses so their products cannot be forged, and sending professional chemists to supervise production outposts.

The reports were tabled in federal parliament earlier this month with the committee that oversees the Australian Crime Commission. The committee is examining whether Australia is doing enough to combat the scourge of synthetic illicit drugs.

A report by the Queensland Alcohol and Drug Research and Education Centre criticises police forces for inadequate information sharing, data collection and record keeping.

There have been large seizures of amphetamines and ecstasy in the past year, but the ACC reports that Australia is facing increasing threats from both transnational criminal groups and local manufacturers, which they admit may be producing more ecstasy than police realised.

The ACC has an entire section working on curbing the supply of synthetic illicit drugs, but has found that a third of its other investigations also involve some element of synthetic drug manufacturing or importing.

"Information obtained by the ACC indicates that organised crime elements are involved in ATS (amphetamine-type stimulants) production in NSW and Victoria, while Queensland attracts involvement from smaller and highly diverse criminal groups with serious and organised crime group connections," their report says.

The ACC said local manufacture was relatively easy with many devices needed to produce speed available for purchase on online auction sites.

Police services say that the use of "ice", a stronger and purer amphetamine, is also attracting Asian criminal syndicates, who now prefer the drug to heroin because of its profitability.

NSW police say their intelligence has found most ice enters Australia through New Zealand after being produced in "superlabs" in China, The Philippines, Malaysia and Fiji.

"Some Southeast Asian crime groups, having transferred their interests from heroin to ice, appear to be utilising the routes previously established for heroin supply and funds transfer," the report said.

"They recruit middle-aged couriers to each carry approximately 350 grams of ice, paying them $20,000 to $30,000."

When the AFP looses its monopoly on importation.

You'd also see a steep decline in these artificially inflated prices, if we were to abolish the meddling socialist government of Australia, preferably with violence.

I'd put my standard position that ecstasy should be immediately legalised, but I'm worried that I'll be tarred with the same kook brush as Napoleon's Magical Fruitcake.

If you ask me, one of the worst things about illegal drugs is that they're not sold by law abiding companies. The profits accrue entirely to organised crime. In a free market I could buy shares in Wide Eyed Drugged Out Losers Pty Ltd and help spread the financial love around a bit.

Post 7

el pres, i have never thought of it that way....

i like it!

Post 8

meh, calls for legalisation of drugs have been around forever. prohibition doesn't work. pitty the government is too caught up in the politics of it to do what's best for the country.

Exactly. That is why the welfare state, including healthcare, must be abolished. Lets' see Centerlink offices burning, people! :D

Congratulations and now people like me who can't afford medical bills or medical cover are no longer allowed treatment and staying healthy becomes something that only the rich can do. Good work. I RELY on public healthcare if I break a bone, get very sick, etc.

Example - In early 2004 I got blood poisoning from a golden staph infection that got into my bloodstream. I had to be pumped full of 3 different antibiotics and was on morphine, tramadol, and panadeine forte just so I could function. Without those drugs I would have died. I cannot afford one dosage of any of those, and as such without healthcare systems in place, I would have stayed home and died instead.

Example 2 - Abolish centrelink? OK yes I understand this system has issues and is abused. However what about those families that rely on it because they cant get a job no matter how hard they try. I have a friend who works her arse off every week trying to get a job but can't. So because she just has really bad luck getting a job does that mean she doesnt deserve to be able to survive?

Both those systems are about quality of life for people who cant afford to do anything else. How is abolishing these and making simple health care only something well off families can have going to help this country? How is having millions of people who can't get a job because they cant even afford clothes because centrelink doesnt exist going to help anyone? I know without centrelink for a while there I would have been homeless. You may be some rich prick with plenty of money to go around, but not all of us are, so just **** off with your elitist BS.

Post 13

that was quite a rant there wrath well done.

*claps*
the sense of social justice is what sets Australia apart from alot of places in the world. sure it take up alot of taxes (40% of budget if you combine healthcare and welfare) but hell, we can afford it, it promotes equality and it means that one problem (ie long sickness, unable to find a job for a while) doesnt wreak you for the rest of your life as you are supported until you can get back on your feet. its better than making people beg for moneyor have to work when they really shouldnt ahve to (like 80 year old grandmas).
sure you have sponges like dole bludgers or those who claim work comp becasue of one injury and never go back to work..they cant do their original job but they would still be able to get an office job or something.
a good system with holes is better than a shit system.
see americas poor for example. their welfare/health system is a p.o.s so you have huge numbers of homeless and dirt poor ppl in one of the world's richest countries...screw that shit

Post 15

Without welfare I know I would have ended up one of those homeless at one point in my life and because of the way things would have been there would have been no way out.

Without healthcare I wouldn't be alive right now.

Post 16

i agree without centerlink i wouldnt have been able to even catch a bus to goto an interveiw to get work. healthcare....ummm nah no experience with them, im not accident prone.

Yeah I know, I'm talking about ZPC's comment. I agree with you about people doing that, it comes down to abuse of the system. But ZPC's comment of abolishing it completely as well as centrelink - basically a get a job and make a lot of money or die homeless world - is what was pissing me off. Especially being someone that relies on those systems not through abuse but through genuine need and someone who is only alive because those systems are in place.

Post 20

The welfare situation in Australia is shocking. Read a book called "Australia's Welfare Habit" by Peter Saunders. The system is a joke and needs serious reform.

Post 21

I agree, but abolishing it is not the way to go about it.

Post 22

it doesnt matter what system you put in place you are always going to get people who will exploit it, you will never get a perfect population.

Post 23

Quote from Wrathlon:
I agree, but abolishing it is not the way to go about it.

fo' shizzle. but at the moment it's wasting huge amount of resources, and the government won't start any sort of reform due to the politics of it.

it's safe to say the Australian welfare situation is one of the worst in the developed world. there needs to be provisions for people who are experiencing temporary unemployment, disabilities, full time carers etc. but our system is rediculous.

ps. ignore ZPC and maybe he'll **** off.

Post 24

i dont know about the worst system, the only reason people think that its bad is because of the amount of people being able to live off it, eg. lazy people who smoke drugs all day. when i was on centerlink, after i got out of the airforce, yes there were a few problems, but other than that, they hooked me up with a job agency and all went well i got a job within 1 month and then i moved here, and got a job within 3 weeks, but job hunting of course still relies on the person to make the effort, i just know that centerlink helped me out.

Post 25

Quote from uber tard:
ps. ignore ZPC and maybe he'll **** off.

Yeah I wasn't going to say anything but **** it. I refuse to have someone tell me that the system which literally saved my life should be scrapped and indirectly bad mouth people that use it (me).

Post 26

Nah, that's not it at all. The reason people say that is because there is quantifiable data which suggests that.

Quote:
Forty years ago, only 3 per cent of working age adults depended on income support. Today it is about 17 per cent. There used to be 22 workers to support each person on welfare. Now there are five.

A snippet from the back of the book I mentioned. There are lots of problems with the welfare system. The current level of subsistance (according to the current system) in Australia is around the "2k mark for the individual and around $20k for a couple without kids. Why the hell do people start paying tax at $6k only to have it paid back in welfare? What a beurocratic waste of resources.

Also, with the current system, there are cases where the marginal tax rate for someone going from welfare to employment is almost (or in certain cases over) 100%. That basically means that in many cases there are little to no incentives for long-term unemployed people to work.

Those are two things I can think of off the top of my head. Had to study this very situation very closely last semester for my eco degree.

edit: yup, he sure is a retarded troll wrath :) also how did this thread get onto welfare, rofl. back on topic for me.

Post 27

uber tard - I'm surprised to find someone else who's read Peter Saunders on welfare reform.

That report basically says what we've known for a long time:

1) current prohibition doesn't work

2) the government doesn't actually care about harm minimalisation

3) they probably won't implement effective HM policies as they are caught up in the politics of it.

4) the current policies of trying to control demand by showing misleading, and often downright wrong images of drug use don't work. (i.e. those spastic ads on tv showing someone dying from taking ecstacy)

I like how in the report they show figures from a report showing that alcohol is a "riskier" substance than mdma.

OK **** stick. I earn $250 a week. Out of that I pay "05 a week rent, $50 a week fuel, $50 a week food, $30 a week towards bills. That leaves me with "5 a week. So what the **** have some political bullshit got to do with my situation. This is how much I earn, all I pay is stuff I HAVE to pay to survive. If I get sick or something goes wrong, I am totally screwed. Its not a pharmeceutical company conspiracy cock wipe, its basic math. Shit costs money, I have no money, therefore I can't buy shit. Alright asshole. I work 40 hours a week, often up to 50 or 60. When I go home, I often take work home with me. I work my ****ing arse off, something you wouldn't know about with mummy and daddy paying for everything for you. Want to know how I bought my computer? By saving every spare cent I ever earnt...what is fair about some rich ****er sitting on daddy's inheritance buying whatever he wants and never having done a damn thing for it when I work twice as hard in a week as you little rich bitches having probably worked in a lifetime. Basically your attitude is this "You're not rich so you dont deserve anything". Well **** you, you don't deserve anything until you ****ing work for it. In fact, prissy little mamma's boys like you are the ones that get ebaten up at school for being little stuck up wankers. Wait that's it isnt it, you feel the need to belittle the lower class population to feel better about the fact some lower class girl beat you up every day dont you? Guess what, I AM responsible for myself, I dont ask people for help even when I really need it, often I refuse help when its given to me. So dont you make me out to be some leeching whore simply because I don't earn enough cash in one year to pay one night in hospital. Yes I have a RIGHT to life, I have RIGHT to survive. It's people like you who think that the poor don't deserve to live who should be shot, or better yet, forced to go to spend x amount of years working in a 3rd world country so you can gain a little ****ing respect and common decency.

Quote from Napoleons Magical Bicorne:

Good work ****er. So I have kids, even if I earn enough money to manage through short periods of unemployment. Now I slip and fall and break my back. I am now a cripple and unable to work. I rely on government payments and a nursing home to survive. Does that mean the 15 years of hard work I have put into things is irrelevant and that I deserve to be homeless and simply end up in a gutter somewhere because I am no longer able to work. Think about that for a minute. Circumstances change, nothing is guaranteed. So even in YOUR example, they can end up ****ed over and lose everything because you think only the rich and healthy deserve anything.

Quote from Napoleons Magical Bicorne:
Oh yeah, we also need to abolish the minimum wage.
Of course, why didn't I think of that. Now companies figure "Hey lets exploit all the 15 year old kids as we can now pay them $3 an hour cause they will take anything". Good work, now the poor are guaranteed to never get ahead because they are depserate for every bit of money they can get and companies know there is always someone willing to take the most pathetic insubstantial amount of money to do their work for them. The rich benefit from this, more money for them as wages are now cut by 75%. Seem's your ideal world is where the rich stay rich and the poor get poorer. This is also works on two levels. The middle class people will now get a call fromt heir boss saying "Hey, you are now on $5 an hour instead of the $20 an hour you were on before". So now everything but the very upperclass and their buddies are poor. But hold on a minute here, isnt this thge very thing you have been preaching against. Upperclass groups all in with each other to keep themselves up there and exploit those under them for personal gain? Yeah, ****ing hypocrisy for the win.

Quote from Napoleons Magical Bicorne:
Heard of charity? You have a home, offer her a place to sleep.
Would love to. In fact I would definately say yes I would. But thanx to my lack of a minimum wage I now have to pay for an extra person on "00 less a week. So now I can afford rent and no power/phone/etc if I want to buy food. But we have no way of cooking decent food or having a healthy diet so we get sick. Now we have no money to pay for your medical treatment I dont have a right to so we get to sit at home die. Guess what, eventually you little rich bastards are going to run out of poor desperate people to work for you. Then what?

Quote from Napoleons Magical Bicorne:
You should try a career as a stand-up comedian.

Yeah because human rights is such a joke isn't it.

Quote from Napoleons Magical Bicorne:

If by "freer world" you mean a world where the impoverished get more impoverished and the rich get richer and those of us that can't afford things never geta chance to prove their "worth" as you seem to think.

Quote from Napoleons Magical Bicorne:
The elite instituted the welfare system as part of their war against the poor.
Yeah just what I thought, you DO think all the poor deserve to suffer. Lovely. Right up there with all the other politcal **** heads you so strongly oppose. Wrong arsehole, it's about giving everyone a chance at life. The little poor kid who earns $3 an hour and only survives because of welfare could be the kid who discovers the cure for that cancer you are dying from. But we'll never know will we because they are poor, they don't deserve to have a chance at life, all their job is to serve you rich bastards under near slave conditions. I'm the one promoting and advocating slavery? From the sounds of everything you have said and your whole "Rich stay rich, poor stay poor and work for the rich for minimal everything with no rights at all" arguments it would seem you have more support to slavery than I apparently do.

Well guess what, **** you. I also work, I also pay taxes, I am also paying for it. In fact, I have probably only NOT paid for it myself for maybe 8 months of my entire life I have been elegible to work because I have almost always had a job. I still rely on those benefits however because I don't earn as much as you. But I guess I dont deserve anything. Pay packets are apparently more important than hard work to you. In fact, I'm willing to bet that you have never done hard work before. I did manual labour for 5 years and around 50 hours a week for a pathetic $290 a week. It barely scraped me through, but I managed. And then we got ****ers like you who sit up in your chairs and offices all day earning $500 a week for 38 hours and the hardest work you ever did was lift a ****ing pen. But that's OK, because you have plenty of money and I am slogging my arse off for a minimum amount so you can ensure you keep your elitist lifestyle with a minimum of interruption safely at home knowing poor ****ers like me will do whatever you want so maybe you will show us some pity when we are dying and desperate for some medical attention, because lets face it, we clearly don't deserve it.

$290/50 = $5.80 an hour.

Quote:
I work 40 hours a week, often up to 50 or 60

$250/40 = $6.25 an hour.
$250(?)/50 = $5.00 an hour.
$250(?)/60 = $4.15 an hour.

So Wrathlan has gone from earning $5.80 an hour, to $6.25 an hour, and improvement of .45 cents? He's been working for more than 5 years?

I find this extemely hard to believe.

hard to believe???? but you believe anything!!.....you believe that the world is hollow!! :P

Before I respond in full to Wrathlon's post, I'd like to clarify this issue of wages;

Does this make sense...

$290/50 = $5.80 an hour.

$250/40 = $6.25 an hour.
$250(?)/50 = $5.00 an hour.
$250(?)/60 = $4.15 an hour.

2xDifferent jobs. And find it difficult to believe all you like. Thats how much I get a week. BTW, my pay is a set amount each week. I work 40 hours a week minimum.

So you really do claim to earn $4.15 an hour, 'some weeks'?

What do you do?

Post 50

goddamn. why did he disappear from my ignore list
*adds NMB again*

Post 51

wage laws is like "2/hour isnt it? if thats all your earning then what your boss is doing is illeagal, just saying...

Post 52

thats the wonder of people who work in the service industry that need to sign workplace agreements to get work. I know a handful of people on "part time" contracts earning $300 p/w, and working more than the standard 40 hour week. resturants are especially dubious, even some of the larger chains.

admittedly no one my age, but all are over the age of 18.

Post 53

OK, my first job was part time work although I did more than 40 hours a week quite often. I got $290 a week on average after tax.

My new job in my new city (before he starts carrying on about accepting less) I earn $250 a week after tax. That's whether I work 40 or whatever hours. I do a minimum of 40 hours a week. Why am I working for so little? Cause I need a job, and it's the best I can do for now.

This is not something unusual, the fact you find it hard to believe reinforces my opinion that you are a little rich bitch.

Post 54

Wrathlon, let me explain the lack of responses to your last post.

We are all so dreadfully embarrassed by your foolishness in accepting that wage, that we've been left speechless!

So what do you suggest then smart arse? I refuse that wage and continue being unemployed? Then I'd rely on centrelink completely which according to you I shouldn't. My other alternative is lose my food, shelter, everything and live on the streets with no money, no job and no way of ever getting a job. That way I satisfy both things you seem to think I should do - those being not work for that little (No job) and not use centrelink (no financial support of any kind).

Yeah, sure, except as was said I wont get a job there cause they don't employ people over 16 pretty much. Oh yeah, and I'd get very little hours meaning I'd come home with less at the end of each week. You realise you can't just walk into there and say "Hey I'm working for you guys now".

Also it means Ill be stuck in what is a dead end job all my life. Again, keeping the poor, poor and the rich rich. You are the biggest pile of shit walking the earth currently you know that?

PS - When job hunting you think I didn't apply at all those places? Yeah don't talk shit about stuff you clearly have NFI about.
