I love this ad, it looks great.
I still think the Wii controller is too gimmicky though.
Unless they've made some real leaps and bounds in wireless, 3d positioning technology, this controller will be the downfall of this console.

yeah i'll believe it when i see it but everything i've read/seen from e3 seems to suggest that it works really really well. finally a reason to play fps on console, and goddamn i can't wait for the new zelda :)

Post 3

Seems like an awesome idea, especially during the sword fight.. the idea of being able to swing the sword however you want, hold a gun however you want etc. Hope it works out well for them.

Post 5

glad to see they have gone back to their roots of nes and snes for the non remote controller

Post 6

The sword fighting looks cool, I might actually buy the consol when its out now, Not really as a gaming device but as a toy :)

Post 7

I think thats only one of the controllers. I'm pretty sure the main controller is long and rectangular. The wii is going to bring Nintendo back into the spolight - they did have a bad few years but they raped sony's PSP with the DS now the playstation is going to lose to the wii.

Even the Xbox director says buy nintendo

Post 8

thats because microsoft would rather compete with the wii than the ps3. the ps3 competes on feature and horsepower. the xbox360 and the ps3 are in the same category. the wii is in a branch of its own, no direct competion. and if ppl buy the wii with the xbox360, they sure as hell arn't going to buy the ps3 aswell

Virtual Console: Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

right there thats gonna be awesome :D xbox live arcade sucks this is more like it...

whao that looks pretty ****ing cool. i don't know about this positioning stuff though, could go wrong, lets hope not, but i would think that it would make things pretty hard.

Post 11

i just want to be able to play all the old games. not much point of porting nes controllers to the pc when you have wii

Post 12

i own a PS2, and will ultimately buy a PS3 when prices go down, but will DEFINATELY be buying the Wii first up, assuming the prices are going to be nowhere near that of the newly released PS3.

cmon, zelda, mario and super metroid with that cool remote, hell yeh!

Post 13

Why do I think that those controlers will be used as some sort of sex toy.

cause you a twisted and need help? :p

Post 15

Well it vibrates; it's elongated and has a control switch on the end. What more could you want from a controller if your a women. Or is it just my sick twisted mind playing Nintendo fantasy.

Post 16

nah you're right, going to be some definate spadge rubbing abilities.

Post 17

Meh some of the games in the vid don't look like they will get any benifit from using that controller. The racing game looked like utter shit as did the flying game and i really saw no benifit of using the controller for them. The FPS game didn't look all that great either.

Zelda, the sword game and those party type games looked fun though. But its still as swamp rat said the only reason Microsoft says buy the wii is because they consider the PS3 actual competition.

Also i doupt game developers will bother supporting that controller if it didn't work very well, so i would assume it does its job fine :). That is unless nintendo isn't paying them to make games with a dis-functional control method.

Microsoft is in direct competition with Nintendo, console sales are both around the same percentage.

There has been so much support for the DS functions especially from Japanese producers who ... need I say it? Make the best Innovative & fresh games then any other country.

Nintendo will win because it provides to the growing percentage of female, older and younger gamers as well as dedicated hardcore gamers. Playstation sold the most consoles sure ... but notice how Nintendo has the most games sold? Microsoft and Playstation keep thinking they can focus on dedicated gamers and win well hardcore gamers are more likely to crack the console and download games.

To win nowadays in the console war I believe you need to cater for all walks of life and that's exactly what Nintendo does. I think most of you on these forums don't seem to understand the Sims sold more copies worldwide then any other game.(on PC) Thats hardly a hardcore game. funny a game that everyone says is a chicks game sells more copies then the games targeted for the larger male population...

It is isnt it? I mean, look if someone like Kernal who's an honorary chick buys all the Sims games (which he does), then that artificially inflates the oh bugger i forgot where i was going with this... well.. at least I got to payout Kernal.

Post 22

The sims was one game, is there much difference is 10 different games can make the same sales?. The xbox 360 and PS3 will have "chicks" based games. The reason the DS is the best handheld consol is probably because nintendo manages to just make the better device in that area. But nintendo has always had the won in this area haven't they?. This didn't improve sales of their previous consol did it? So would selling the wii be realated at all if nintendo controls the handheld market.

Sure the DS may have a lot of Japanese developers which may create the most innovative games but who do you think has been and will be making games for the PS1, PS2 and the PS3? Most of the big selling games for those companies were from Japanse companies.

The fact that the movie in the first post of this thread showed a few games which looked like utter crap, both graphically and in gameplay probably shows their won't initially be that many large developers behind the consol. Granted the games which did seem to make good use of the controller looked like they supported it very well.

The wii just doesn't compete with the PS3 and xbox 360. The wii has shows innovation but for a lot of game genra that controller won't really add to the experience.

Also the fact is graphics are a major selling point for games. The PS3 will win in this over time as developers manage to make better tools to build games with. Unless im mistaken and the wii is more powerful.

Also im unsure but can't the xbox 360 and PS3 be used as a home-entertainment center as well? No idea if the wii can.

Now im not saying the wii won't do well. Its obvious it will probably do better then their last consol, But its not going to just kill off the xbo360 (which already has the market) and the PS3 which is considered the most powerful device. Also 3 consols will have games that will force people just to buy the consol for that particular game. They each have their own pro's and cons but it just seems the wii is more of a toy(nothing wrong with that) :)

Post 23

The way I see it, xbox360 and ps3 are in direct competition with the PC. I know who is going to win that one. I mean seriously what games on xbox 360 can't you play on PC. Apart from one or two major titles (halo3 or similar) PC > Xbox360.

To me the Wii is trying to move away from the same old console war crap we've had for years now. The only console I am definately going to buy is a Wii. Nintendo innovation + classic nintendo franchises + new games where developers actually put some effort into designing gameplay as opposed to a pissing competition about which has better graphics = win.

And what "chicks" games do ps3 and 360 have? They'll come up with some half assed crap like the singing game or eye toy games. But they won't have anything on the versatility the Wii will have to create exciting games for all ages. If you want a powerful device stick with your PC cause it will be more powerful than the ps3 in 2 years or less otherwise give the Wii a go. Ps3 and Xbox 360 are the same old games with the same old gameplay just a little prettier.

edit: the only decent reason to buy a ps3 or 360 imo is for a media centre. but that doesn't interest me :)

Post 24

Tachi the wii is going to drill the PS3 like the DS drilled the PSP. Developers will take advantage of the innovative gameplay like they took advantage of the DS. And what handheld flopped? Yep that was the PSP.

And dont even bother talking about the market monopoly. I mean Nintendo had the console market for ages before the PS pushed them off the scene, if Sony had created a GOOD handheld then yea they could have had that market to.

Sony just aren't being flexible enough they are focusing on the shooting, racing gameing genre and well... that's just never going to be as strong as the SIMS

I never buy a game based off graphics, gameplay wins for me everytime. In fact I hear so many reviews on "yea the graphics are pretty but the game sucks 2/10" Counterstrike had more pull & lastibility then Oblivion ever will.

In fact how many people on this forum can say they have the same video game lastability they had two years ago.

Don't forget Sony's going the same route with their motion sensing buzzword too. So the same gameplay will apply to the PS3.

Hey Aegis... there aint nothing wrong with the SIMS *cough* *choke* *die*....

Post 27

Nah sony are just chucking a bandaid solution on because they realise they've been outclassed. It seems like further proof that nintendo is onto a winner and the other companies know it. Besides it's not even close to the Wii's controller, it's a whole class below.

Post 28

The whole concept is just dumb.. they died the big one on PCs years ago.. now they pedal them at the console market... although i suppose those stupid dance mats seem to sell so maybe people WONT get sick of waving their arms around straight off the bat.

Post 29

As uber suggested, you're comparing apples to oranges.

The wii will probably come in at approx US$250(AUS$300+??)
The ps3 when released maybe towards "000.

They will have separate capabilities, the wii is a cheap little toy, that parents will buy their kids because it's CHEAP comparitively. There are alot more struggling middle class families than rich ones. Enthusiasts with different needs will want to buy more powerful boxes like xbox360, ps3.

Marketing will have a huge effect too, but the bottom line is that like the consoles of a few years ago, the wii will be the same, a cheap little box that simply plays games and will be forgotten in the kids cupboard when the next model is released.

Post 30

Why have they gone back to a SNES controller? Damn thing used to give everyone cramps.

Post 31

I still have Street Fighter 2/ Killer Instinct callouses from that controller :)

As to the topic I think Sony have already lost this round.

Better luck for the PS4.

Post 32

That's what people said about Sega when the Genesis came out... "Don't worry, they'll have better luck with their next console"... then they released the Dreamcast.

Seems once you've been knocked down, regardless of prior presence, reputation or size, you're gone for good. The console market is a volatile one, and tends to show no mercy.

Who remebers attempts from NEC and Panasonic to slide in? Hah. How about The Phantom?!

The only company with 9 lives is Nintendo, who arguably haven't actually made any major mistakes bar the Virtual Boy. Regardless of how poorly the Gamecube has done in comparison to the Xbox and PS2, it has still done rather well in the big scheme of things.

Because they are "innovative" :)

And back onto the nintendo owned the psp stuff, how does this compare to the consol fight? Nintendo already owned the handheld market. It had all the developers backing each new device. The psp started from scratch and yeah nintendo beat it, although is the psp still bringing in sony a profit?

I think nintendo is relying on that controller to catch up. The PS3 will do well because people trust sony enough and it will have a lot of graphically nice games that people want to play. In all fairness isn't the PS3's motion thing like some gimmicky thing they added in late that is very limited compared to the wii's system?

Either way because of nintendo's controller the next batch of consol's will probably be very interesting :) With 3 companies competing like this the consumers should be happy. Hopefully all 3 will last and will never go out of business.

But yeah the wii does look like fun, that sword game looked great. So yeah spero im not saying nintendo will fail or anything (heck i hope it does very well) but i just don't think that the controller will allow it to out sale the PS3 and Xbox360. I mean even microsoft says buy the wii. They probably wouldn't say that if they gave two shits about it.

Meh i need to stop typing so much :(

Post 34

this thread's becoming a novella! Next chapter! =)

Post 35

Tachi ... enough about Nintendo owning the handheld market... I mean did you read my post at all?

Anyway your obviously a PS fanboy so we will just wait for the market to see who is right.

Post 36

ok on another note - lets not forget that without nintendo, sony would never have even gotten as far as they have; and they were at one stage partners (anyone remember the original playstations played snes cartridges?)
