THE US has banned Vegemite, even to the point of searching Australians for jars of the spread when they enter the country.
The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite has been deemed illegal under US food laws.

The great Aussie icon - faithfully carried around the world by travellers from downunder - contains folate, which under a technicality, America allows to be added only to breads and cereals.
Australian expatriates in the US said enforcement of the ban had been gradually stepped up and was now ruining lifelong traditions of Vegemite on toast for breakfast.

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

The US was "a minor market'' for Vegemite, she said.

I am aware that you dislike me, seeing how you tend to follow me from thread to thread for no other purpose than to disparage me.

The question is whether to ignore you until you grow weary of it, or to pay you the attention you so desperately seek, and determine why.

I think I'll choose the former.

no americans like vegimite anyway, it's practically impossible to buy over there. this will make absolutely no difference. i asked a family friend who lives over there what she though about the ban and she said "what's vegimite?"...

"in the early 2000s, the US FDA prevented the import of Vegemite from Australia, citing, as the reason, that the folic acid levels are too high. In 2005 it was impossible for Australian Expatriates to buy Vegemite in jars of larger than 113 grams (4 oz.)."

What's interesting is that since this story became reported in the Australian press someone edited out the above entry from the Wikipedia article

I hate Vegemite. It tastes like arse and smells even worse.

<flamebait> I don't particularly care if Australian's can't get Vegemite in America, it's their fault for livning in America (what did you expect would happen over there... intelligent decisions by the government?). </flamebait>

Post 27

I don't mind the ol' scrape'o'mite on toast. But it's hardly the Auzzie icon any more is it? I mean, we don't even own it any more, do we?

did u forget this :D

Quote:
In October 2006, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported that vaginamite is banned in the USA, with Customs officials going so far as to even search Australians for Vegemite when they enter the country. [1] However, no official statement from the Food and Drug Administration or any other US government agency has been made specifically banning yeast extract products. Some believe that this is a misunderstanding. [2]

lol - because taking information from wikipedia a site that anyone can edit/butcher is really something we can trust

whoever's IP address is "124.177.235.125" stop editing wiki atricles with rude language - tsk tsk tsk

Myth - busted!

So who's stupid - the media for reporting on this in the first place, or everybody who jumped on the bandwagon to say "Dumb yanks".

As the news report says, it would only be banned if folate was added to it, not just because it happens to be present in it.

Oh well, back to some real news, maybe?

Post 30

Hilarious. We're as bad as Fox! :)

Post 31

It was from a reliable source, so of course it's believable.

wouldnt surprise me at all. It is funny how we reacted, but can you blame us :)
