Thought i'd throw up a new thread for the second test.
Same side as the first test so Australia decided to not go with two spinners. Interesting but I have to say I thought the bowling attack from the first test was awesome.
making a game of it would be ballsy. making a draw out of it would be sensible. if the poms set a target tho and the aussies nail it, that'd be a massive psychological blow. good to see gilly put a few runs on the board, would have been nice if he could have tonned up, but at least he looked like the gilly of old toward the end of the innings.
Quote from MetalAttack;288092: australia only have 134 to declare.. or they can bat on.. what will they do?
They can actually declare at anytime now they want. And I reckon they'll bat it out a bit and get a ton of runs quickly, declare, try to bowl England out and go for a win. Failing that, hold out for a draw.
Quote from Xaine;288296: Why, oh why, do they insist on keeping Hayden? Drop the bum and get somebody who can bat!
drop him, move hussey to opener, clarke can stay in and they can get either their precious allrounder watson in, or preferably, give macgill a run as a second spinner.

Who does Phil Jaques have to root to get a shot? Or who DID he root to keep getting left out?

right thats it, you asked for it :P
who do you drop for him? he is an opening bat so you would think he needs to bat 1,2 or 3
langer (82 & 100* in first test) and hayden are not in that bad form and they are the best opening pair australia has ever had
ricky ponting no further comment needed
martyn is under fire, even tho his last hundred was only 3 tests ago, but i dont think by jaques, , i dont think you can swap an opening bat for a number 4 in the australian side. the only way martyn should get another game is if watson is not fit, if watson is fit clarke to replace martyn at 4
a big question is what bowlers do you take into the next test?
clarke vs mcgrath
clarke is in sparkling form and mcgrath is only holding up an end, if watson comes back a bowler will have to go i think
there's no goddamn reason to stick watson in the side. at all. if mcgrath gets dropped i think you'll have a national mutiny - it's hardly fair to say he's "holding up an end" when the first innings of this test match may as well have been played on a friggen runway. if any of the current fast bowlers should feel threatened, it's lee.

besides he bowls fast and bats well, no reason at all :D
would be the hugest call ever to drop ooh ahh, would it ever happen? i say he is holding up an end in the last test, clarke still got 3 top order wickets on the same runway that mcgrath was bowling on mcgrath got 2 for the match and that was 10 and 11 on the last day
even if he didnt take more wickets than mcgrath last test (he did and they were batsmen) could you drop lee for a test at the waca? the fastes bounciest wicket in the world?
that's australias bowling for the test series so far. there's nothing in mcgraths figures there that says 'drop him'. he ran through them in brisbane, had a hard time of it on the adelaide pavement, so what? the simple fact that he's glenn mcgrath is enough to convince me that he's going to roll the english at least once more this series.
that's taking nothing away from clark, the bloke has been a revelation. brett lee tho? so what if he's fast? fast bowlers are supposed to take wickets, something he's not doing. yeah he can bat, and i love it when he makes runs, but he's not doing the job opening the bowling.
Bowling isn't simply about taking wickets. Sure it's what they are all trying to achieve but there is more to it then simply taking a wicket. Applying pressure, supporting the other bowler at the other end and so on. Lee is a strike bowler, yes he's meant to take 1 or 2 top order wickets but he's also there to shake the batsmen up, he does so with speed/swing. McGrath and Clark do it in a different manner, with accuracy and consistancy. Warne is well Warne, ha can do everything heh.
I like the bowling lineup, they seem to fit well together and all are pretty decent with the bat and great in the field. But hey who am I to say :p
i reckon we could name the allan border beach cricket side and still give em a shake, so regardless of the team and structure we will not lose the ashes.
however if the opposition was better and we were to go on a complete side, im not sure whether you name 2 bowlers for one job, mcgrath and clarke are there doing the same job, lee bowls fast mcgrath and clark bowl the line and length and there is room for the both coz watson is out, bring watson back and someone is going to miss out on the overs, so who will it be?
australia is a better side on paper with watson (and m. clarke), you bat deeper and dont lose any bowling depth
except watto is unproven. he averages 20 with the bat and 60 with the ball in tests. remind me again if he's a batting or bowling all rounder?
not to mention that he's likely to slip a disc or something in this third over. the bloke has spent more time out injured than he has in the actual squad.
Theres no way you can drop McGrath, so what if he didn't clean up in the last test. He is still McGrath, and he was still recovering from that bruised heel. IF anyone is to go it should be Lee, tho I still dont see any reason to change the side at all.

Agreed that Hayden or Langer are probably the ones that would have to make way, unless you were to drop Martyn and have Jaques at 3 and Ponting at 4.
My problem with Australian opening batsmen for a number of years is that they seem to be inconsistent, and make a big score at just the right time to keep their spots in the side.
It is nice to be spoilt for choice though isn't it.
EDIT: I also think that team selection should be based more on form at the present time, rather than past form - it's amazing what being dropped to the state side for a couple of games can do for someone's determination to succeed.
What's to say Martyn will not score 200 if Ponting is out for a duck?
the fact that he's a hopeless choker of epic proportions, who habitually fails under pressure.
also, if you think failing to bowl england out on that pitch is a sign of crap bowlers, you're mistaken. 1100 runs for 16 wickets in 4 days, the pitch was a batsmans paradise.

ROFL Hoggard ripped 7 wickets through the Aussies with awesome bowling.
Just because the English batting is getting better we are now claiming batting pitches? This is cricket, good bowlers get wickets.
looks like batting mistakes, luck and the pitch to me. he isnt a great bowler, flintoff is fifty million times better than he is. and so is jones.
you can't tell me that over 4 days you can score 1000 runs against bowlers like mcgrath, warne, flintoff, clarke and more...and say it's not a bad pitch.
and in case you thought english batting was getting better, on day 5, 54 overs were bowled, for SEVENTY RUNS. thats 324 balls, for 70 odd runs, and they lost NINE wickets.
then we go and score 170 at 5 runs an over on the same day.

on days three and four. here's something you may not have known, turf pitches deteriorate over time, generally becoming progressively harder to bat on.
hoggard may have got 7 wickets, but australia STILL managed over five hundred runs.
he bowled well, no doubt, but he's still a pie chucker. one innings doesn't prove you can bowl, just like one innings doesn't prove you can't.
