I want a DVD player for the home TV that will let me play burnt DVD's that are .avi or .mpeg instead of having to transcode movies and only get 1 on the disc.

I know there are some that do it.. but what brand and type? how much?
or if anyone has one they wanna get rid off let me know..

Thanks :-)

have you considered a mediagate type unit? basically a portable harddrive with RCA etc connectors - plays mpeg, avi, et al - plus the firmware is upgradeable to keep up to date with new versions of the codecs (like divx)

My mediagate is one of the best purchases I ever made.
Wish I waited and got the wireless unit though, considering geting another some time!

just buy a wireless access point, stick that near the mediagate, plug in the lan cable between them and go from there =)

and i agree - mediagate rocks!

I would really suggest you research standalone divx/xvid players, the cheaper ones use chipsets that dont fully support xvid. I have a cheap one from DSE, sometimes it doesnt decode the video that well and you get sound skips and the picture degrades.
Also I have found that if you want to watch say a TV series, it wont play it in order unless you go and relabel them 01, 02, 03 so on, at least thats on mine

most things wont play files sequentially unless you do something to make it so - eg relabelling for mediagate type players, or burning them in a the specific order on a DVD

This man speaks the truth, i picked up a $60 one from Wow and it plays everything.

Dont spend $$ on DVD players, get a cheap one and replace it every year.

have to agree with you there - bought a second hand telly from cashies for cheap to tide us over til we could afford a decent one, it's lasted us 2 years (only needed it for a few months), good quality picture, and it's 80cm :D
