i just been approved for a loan and wanna get a bike im looking into getting a Merida AM800-d for $2500 has anyone got a merida bike or suggest a bike with dual suspension

yeah both im. not too keen on the hybrid bikes i want my bike to be strong
and i want it to go bush bashing once in a while :)

or just go down to the local bicycle store and pick up a decent mountain bike for less than 500 bucks - jeez 2.5k for a bicycle?!!?

ive allway loved bikes i prefer riding then driving i want a good quality bike that not going to break after six months. ive had 600 dollar bikes before and the cranks are the first to go followed by the back sprocket which can cost alot of money

well some people probably think spending $2000 on a computer is extreme when 900 will do well enough ;)

lol @ ppl think 2.5k for a bike is alot, my bro had 2 bikes at one stage, both worth more then 5k...

yeah carbon fibre thats so over kill dont see a reason for something that expensive

Unless you are a professional sports person where a lighter frame means quicker times - poofteenths of a second :P

If you need to get a loan for a pushbike why not just hang out at that velodrome thingy and just steal one when nobody is looking???

Then you can spend the 2500 on important stuff like drugs and alcohol. (or bail)

I think a loan is a little overkill for a bike, but hey. My suggestion is lower your budget slightly to a hardtail. Dual systems are fantastic but to get a good one, you have to budget higher. The problem isn't in the frame so much, but with the gearing that goes with it. It'll be nicer to get a hardtail with nice gearing then a full system with crap gearing. 2K will get you a really nice mountain bike though in hardtail form, even 1.5K will get you something decent. My suggestion is work the people you buy it from. Sometimes you can get real discounts that make a difference. (for me, I managed to score 500 bucks of bonus stuff, including cleats, helmets and boots) along with the bike. There's nothing shameful of asking what the best price is, I do it all the time, and usually get something out of it.

If you want to do casual riding, and the occasional cross country (no hardcore drops or jumps etc, and I'm not talking about curb jumping either, see pic below) then an aluminium frame is probably an excellent choice. They can handle a bit of punishment, plus they don't put strain on you. They can handle usually most of what you can throw at it. Iron frames are more for those who do like to do hardcore stuff (drops) and downhill.

But the reality is, that you should test them first.

I would agree. If you aren't doing crazy downhill then go a hardtail. My bro has just got rid of his duallie fopr a nice hardtail (around 1.2k) I wouldn't personally spend too much more.

I know I picked up a Giant Yukon with disc brakes in Melb for $700. Hybrids are fantastic for someone who is riding around. I saw my other halfs and think its the bomb (for her that is - I tend to wander off road)
