Win XP Pro help (stability/crashing problem)

Hi all,

been having some problems with my laptop which i use for everything, work, gaming etc. anyway, basically in more recent times i have been having problems such as;

- Computer generally running slow
- Photoshop doesn't always load, freezes up
- Random crashes on programs such as dreamweaver, eclipse and homesite+
- Windows Update locks up my machine whenever it runs (it is currently disabled). this is a known issue with M$ and the suggested fixes don't fix it!

I have run adaware and spybot S&D etc on it and it can't find any problems.

I have done a bit of cleaning up of crap on this machine and it seems to be behaving itself at the moment, except for one problem...

When I go to login (XP Pro in a Domain environment) I sometimes have to login in multiple times. eg. I login, it accepts my password etc. and says the sandard "please wait loading your settings" then it says "logging off" and comes back to the login screen. Sometimes it doesn't happen but when it does happen it's not a consisten number of times. Once it did it 5 times before it would let me in.

Any Ideas? I really don't want to have to completely re-install but I am thinking that this might be the solution. :)

Is anyone else having problems connecting to the domain or is the machine your logging into the domain controller? I'd try getting another machine to login using your user/pass, etc just to remove the server being the problem, hopefully.

I can't really see why the domain controller would let you login then kick you out (assuming its the server), any network problems? (assuming your not using the machine with the domain controller). Try checking your cables, etc.

I'll look around a bit but no idea, never heard of XP logging out straight after logging into a domain.

Edit: Oh check log files on the machine running the domain controller, might have an answer as to why? Hell even on your machine if you've got it setup to.

nah no other domain problems, network is fine, both cabled and wireless tested.

on a side not it also does it when I log into the machine at home when the domain controller is not present.

Hmm you could try work backwards to what you last remember worked?
Installed anything new? Drivers? Hardware? etc.

run a memory test overnight.

Just reinstall windows...your logon service is screwed.

had issues similar to you kernal, ended up being dodgy ram, what paladin said, ram test for errors

Do you have MS Office 2003 installed including office updates?

Im going to go with RAM Test.

Sounds like a Microsoft problem. Don't know if all your problems are related, but for the 'computer generally running slow' and 'windows update' problems....

There's been mixed success stories. If the above don't work, try uninstalling office all together. If that works, try reinstalling office without any updates.

I'm confused Neo, the above two links appear to be pointing to the same thing... is that the case or am I still asleep... :)

i ran the test last night and there were no errors. so I would say that the ram is fine! (Can't remember all the stats, didn't think to take note of any)

Log on as admin, rename your profile then logon to the domain again. It'll recreate your profile.

Obviously you'll have to set up your profile specifics again (eg email etc) but it'll be quicker than a rebuild...
