computer probs

im upgrading my computer after a power spike killed it...:sad:
and i an having the following problems if any one can help that would be nice

the problems are:

on turn on all fans and hdds turn on but no beep at all from the comp and the screen stays black does not show the gfx card boot screen that the company has on the card.
have a new mobo cpu and psu hdd and gfx card work fine in another comp

so, the PSU turns on... and the HDs sais power is good... but the board doesn't like the juice coming from the your PSU?

What board you got?

Does it have diagnostic LEDs?

Are they on? Blinking?

Do you need to reset some sort of spring loaded switch that's supposed to protect your board in case you're using a supply that can toast your board?

wow a bit of puntuation would help with that
even at first is say reseat your cpu.
next i would say try it with no ram and see if it beeps then. if it does the cpu is fine.

unless, you know, there's no speaker. run it up outside the case and have some known good ram to try out.

Have you plugged in the P4 connector from the Power Supply???

i have reseated the cpu and have tried running it with out any ram and there is still no beeps what soever from the mobo and yes the 12v 4 pin conecter is pluged in the the mobo

the mobo i have is a GA-8I848P-G gigabyte
ram is corsair 1 gig ddr400mhz
and the cpu is a 3.0ghz intel p4

is the extra power plugged into the video card?

yep extra power pluged in to gfx card

are the fans connected to the motherboard?

only the cpu fan all my other fans are the normal power plugs

Alrighty so there's power to the motherboard at least. Assuming the CPU fan is going.

But the internal speakers isnt doing anything, are you sure you've got that connected properly? Unless the motherboard is dead the speaker should do its job even with no ram, cpu, etc.

Just get the internal speaker working, i'm fairly certain even if you had just the two power cables to the motherboard + internal speaker + power switch connected it should still beep. Though that said, the motherboard could also be buggered.

If you get it doing that, theres a good start. Then add CPU, then you should get a RAM beep if alls working, if it doesn't then you know you most likely have a problem. Then add RAM, etc.

If I get a problem like this, I like to just rip everything out of the case and start from scratch. Put the motherboard on a table to avoid any shorting problems, disconnect everything from the powersupply and just go with whats needed.

I think that motherboard had a battery, just pop that out for a few seconds and put it back in (with power off) that'll reset the CMOS settings to default. Easier to work with a fresh system.

Also what graphic card you got?

from about the socket a's onwards gigabyte mother boards dont beep if the cpu or mobo is broken
only if the ram or vid card is not present or faulty it will beep
all this i have noticed from experience.

i dont know if this is the case with other brands

i know in older boards if the cpu didnt work it would beep but when i was building skt a, 754, 939, am2, 478 and 775's there was power but no beeps

im not saying the cpu is broken im just saying that it dosnt beep if the cpu is in fact broken.

for interest sake does the cpu fan go flat out or does it start flat out and switch to optimised speeds within a few seconds? if something is wrong it usually stays on flat out.

Yeah I can confirm Gigabytes dont beep at all on a busted board.

bench test the equipment outside the case, if it still doesnt work.

im hoping that the mobo is not falty but im taking it to a friend at by-right tomorrow and he is going to have a look at it there seeing my new psu blew last night when just turning it on at the back of the psu with out anything attached to it

If he has a key he just needs the software which is perfectly legal.

i have a cd and key its just that its a sp1 disk and microsoft cant generate me a new key off a sp1 product key so i have to get a new one

i had to get a new copy for my new gameing comp any way so ill just order two at the same time

Bollocks. If the key is legit then it'll work with any media it's designed for. IE if it's an oem key then it'll work with vanilla or slipstreamed SP1/SP2 media. If it's VLK, then same applies. It only gets hard if you have a tier 1 PC and lose your media. You'll have to get a new CD from your distributor in this case, and considering your upgrade then your OEM licence for your PC would have expired anyway.

The problem is this:

OEM Keys will only install off an OEM Disc.
SP1 Retail keys will only install off SP1 Retail Disks not Service Pack 2 Retail disks. Which is totally retarded considering you can download SP2 anyway as your key is legit.
