Lately my house has been getting alot of calls where we pick up the phone and say hello a few times no one says anything and then they hang up. I was just wondering if this has been happening to anyone else or if theres anyway to find out who the heck is doing it.
if it was just once in a week i wouldnt care but it happened like 3 times yesterday alone.
I got one tonight...maybe some sorta telemarketer system finding new phone numbers...?
if so its ****ing bullshit and telstra should block the cocksuckers

I don't have a phone attached to my phone line, and never have. Problem solved. ;)
call telstra b4 miday tell them what times they have happened if they the same number they should block it.
yeah you will find if you give it about 8 seconds and if you listen hard enough(there is a delay) some indian dude will try and sell you somthing!

im the same
the price of mobiles and with voip software readily available the landline is redundant. only reason i use one is so i can have internet.
Certain providers are now including subsidised line-rental costs in a broadband plan, so technically you're only paying for your broadband (can't make/recieve calls via the landline, no such service is enabled).
Hopefully some of the higher-quality providers start this soon. Ie; Internode. I'd love to ditch my homeline bill and just have one debit for the internet made each month.

Would occur mostly at nights. Thought it was someone scoping to see when we were home, to rob the joint.
I had this happen a few times yesterday
on the third call i let it sit there connected, i went and had breakfast and a shower, came back and it was still connected, 1 hour later :)
I hope it was a long distance call

What the telemarketers do.. they ring numbers in blocks of five. and the first to pick up is the call that they take.

Probably a predictive dialler. These things dial, wait till you answer and then the telemarketer picks up. Sometimes they'll call you and play a message while you wait till their telemarketer is ready to talk to you.....
These overseas dudes usually call via VOIP too so no matter how long you make them wait, they aren't paying stuff-all for the call, and the staff member on their end probably works with a gun in his back for a bowl of rice a day.

I always ask them to wait a sec and then just put the phone down. Couple of times they have still been there after 5-6 mins. Sure it doesn't cost them bugger all but it does waste their time.
i got a telemarket call the other night i asked them for there company name because im on the dont call list and reported, also told the lady i dont call her when shes at home having dinner and to stop ringing my house.
