I spent $800 to play Bioshock

There are many twisted, bitter reviews springing up around the interwebs making claims that the appauling DRM issues and engine flaws have ruined the Bioshock experience for them. That said, those many are only written amidst the many, many more that have given the title shining reviews despite these problems.

I've only been able to get mere minutes into Rapture with my 7950GX2 before artifacts and graphical anomalies splatter my screen, causing my entire machine to lock up. But it was enough to convince me I wanted to keep playing, and as soon as possible. Reading through testimonials of fellow 7950GX2 owners, it was reassuring to know I'm not alone, but that didn't lead to any resolution. I'm sure Nvidia will release some newer drivers and 2K will patch the game, but I have unfortunately already purchased the game via Steam and downloaded my 8GB of data to play, so I kinda would actually like to play.

I could have spat the dummy and joined the "boycott Bioshock" bandwagon, but the end result was a dummy spit that landed me a new Nvidia 8800GTX OC. I justify the cost by telling myself that I was thinking about buying a DX10 card for Crysis anyway, but in reality I was probably never going to spend $800 for a game like Crysis (FarCry was so very, very lame).

In closing; f*ck you 2K. You make a lot of shit games, but this most certainly isn't one of them.

Post 2

should have got xbox version imo.

Post 3

It would have been a cheaper excersise to re-buy a 360 and Bioshock... but with their red-ring rate, I'd rather not. ;)

Post 4

i thought you liked red rings.

Post 5

Only yours, hon.

Post 6

So if Rec had a red ring, he would be experiencing Rapture?

oh my.

.....o.0

well besides the red ring thing...

ive been playing bioshock on my pc with not a damed issue (7950gtx)..... but a mate of mine is experiencing the same issues and hes got a 7900gtx.. must be a driver issuse?

how ever apparently you can play the game if the details are set to medium and that yo have dl the auto update patch...

Post 8

It's only the 7950GX2's that this game has major issues with. Other cards in the 7900/7950 range aren't having the same dilemma.

Post 9

I've been experiencing ALOT of sound issues.
Hasn't stopped me playing though.

Post 10

I finished it on sat night, no issues what so ever....

360 ftw :P

How long did it take you?

Post 13

I saved all the sisters and worst ending ever, wonder if there is a different ending if you kill them all.

Post 14

Looks like I'll be killing them then... :D

How long did it take you?

4 hours friday night, then 11 hours straight on sat.

first game in a long time where I didn't want to stop playing for anything

and I am running through the game again already, and this time, no guns, wrench and plasmids only..... BRING IT ON!!!

Post 16

so would you recommend highly to buy Bioshock for the 360?

Post 17

I'd recommend buying it, whichever platform you want to play it on. Less technical trouble if grabbing it for the 360 though.

Post 18

I just ramed through all the stable driver updates i could.... And played it for 30 seconds on low detail before it crashed. And now after restart cant get it working again. I want my money back!

lol sounds like fun.

Post 20

Sorry to say the ending for killing all of the little sisters isn't so great either :(
But yeah, am kinda doing the same Brain, except pistol as well. you're gonna have fun killing Big Daddy's :P

Post 21

Bugs, flame and my whacking stick, also with the cash you save on ammo, I should never be short on health kits..

I should be all good

Post 22

Good luck killing the big daddys, It would have to be a combo of insect swarm, or frozen or pyro ones to get them down heaps... or find a few rpg turrets etc :p

Post 23

or you know, uber wrench powers :P

I "think" you can stack all the passive wrench abilities, like the frost and lightning one

I hope it will do crazy damage :P

thats the plan anyways

Post 24

how much is it on xbox? and does it take long to get use to controls?

Post 25

i got it for $94 at jb hi fi. controls are easy.

Post 26

If you want the PC version get it from STEAM, I had it ready to play Thursday morning, finished it today, totally awesome.

No root kit, no disks to insert, no worries.

Its games like this that I built my new rig for.

works like a charm :D

ive been doing that since i got the wrench jockey ability except use decoy as well saves your ass allot, ive been playing the game on the hardest mode man its so awesome!!..... but i will say this brain... the big daddy's...and mainly the gun wielding ones... its very difficult to kill them with out dieing 10-20 times in a row....

Post 28

It wouldn't be so bad if the ****ers couldn't AOE Stun you :(

Post 29

Between the stacking and the AoE stun talk you can tell the WoW players from everyone else cant you :p

lol.. the stun is only with the eleets not the gun equipped ones..

hint: when stunned they usually tend to do a shoulder barge.. just hold sides step even when your stunned and they go rushing past :D

Post 31

That'd explain why that one was so fking hard to kill then.

Oh yeah, here's a question too.
Anyone else ever killed a big daddy, then Cleansed a little Sister, then rezoned to find them respawned? I did it three times in one level and got mega amounts of Adam.

Post 32

hold on you mean go to another lvl.. come back (after the 3 year loading time) and shes there next to big dady with no protection....

or they both alive which in most NORMAL cases it would be ok...

btw most lvls have mutable little sisters .. press esc and look at the bottom to find out how many are in your region

Post 33

the easiest way to take down a big daddy (IMHO) is to use electric shotgun shells.

zap zap.

Very cool game though.

I mean you kill Big Daddy, Cleanse/Harvest the Sister.
Go sufficiently far enough away from the area to induce a loading screen, return to the scene of the crime and they've respawned.

Respawn meaning that they are not a new unique spawn.
They are the same one you just killed earlier AND only count as one Sister even if you kill them 40000 times.

.... got atom!!!

i wish that would happen to me... id be swimming in atom, but im a big daddy now...

Post 36

Yeah the only drawback is I don't have enough Ammo to keep killing the Daddy :p

AMD has issued a Bioshock hotfix.

It may or may not resolve some problems :

Quote from TechConnect Magazine:

Although Nvidia went on to release a new ForceWare driver to improve BioShock performance AMD has decided that only a hotfix was needed. Codenamed 737-29041, the update will help out people who experience stuttering with Preload, Missing surfaces and/or display corruption.

The hotfix is available for download here for both Windows XP and Vista. The cards supported are the Radeon HD 2000 series and everything down to the Radeon 9500 series.

Driver Download found here

Post 40

How is 97 meg a hotfix?

Post 42

Post 43

It was a direct copy from TechConnect website - so it must have been their typo :)
