8800 gt

as some know, NVIDIA has released a new/clone gfx card called the 8800 gt...

this card was obviously released 2 weeks prior to ati's release of there new card release as an attempt to scrape more dollars out of the common user and to keep the user basis .

however... the 8800 gt has some interesting aspects...

its comes with either 256 or 512 ddr3 ram and is packaged with NVIDIA's new 0.65 nm chips which means less power consumption and better overall performance.

its true no dx10.1 support for 8800 gt :(

but dosent mean its not a worthwhile card!!!

it may not be good for future proofing, but the 8800 has one hell of a over clocking availability :D

and decent with water cooling and more voltage available you maybe able to push it to about 1650-1700 (if your cautious and have experience :D)

recently heard that the new ati card gets out preformed by the new 8800 gt... not by much though..

but it does come with dx10 and 4.1 sharers and ddr4 so it has even less power consumption (apparently).... so i guess its about wanting to play the new games or having best performance.....

yeah depends, if i buy a 8800GT what games can't i play. as long as i will be able to play Starcraft 2, WAR and Age of conan i think ill be ok.

lastly, I am running a 4800x2 AMD with 2gb RAM. Is it best to get a new computer with new CPU / RAM or just upgrade the video card?

retail replacement. no refurbished crap like most of the other brands. we sell inno, galaxy, hitech, xpertvision, gigabyte, msi, leadtek and eVGA- inno are my preferred choice of those.

end of life cards.. depends on which state they come from, but you generally get the replacement model.

Seriously there is no difference in the lower end price range and hell even some of the better known brands like Asus even use reference cards. There is NO difference to the physical card in most cases. The increase in price is usually for an overclocked version, better bundling and stuff like that.

Brownie.. get a cpu upgrade in there imo, seriously getting to the point where that'll bottleneck the system more then anything.

Interesting couple months ahead, higher end cards still to come and ATI a couple weeks away.

what jono said too, that cpu WILL bottleneck before an 8800 does. and jono, warranty service varies greatly from one brand to another, it's pretty cool tho that one of the cheaper brands (inno) gives imo the best warranty treatment.

Fair point on warranty, can't really comment there, never had a card die and I plan to keep it that way :p

P35 boards are still a great buy and will take the newer Intel CPUs if wondering. Guess it's up to you whether to go DDR3 or not, which can be done on either chipsets anyway.

IMO buy the card, then see if you want the full upgrade later. It won't cost you any more overall.

You'll be surprised just HOW much more performance the 8800 series card will improve over your 7900 - I was pleasantly surprised.

Of course splash and buy the lot now if you like - I know I would if I had the funds just laying idle.
