To put it in perspective, I pay $70/month for ADSL2 with 10gig/15gig and shaping. Its a little pricey but the customer service is ****ing out of this world so I'm more than happy to lay down the few extra $

If I had been using that equivalent telstra plan, I would have had a $4000 internet bill for last month.

I will honsty call telstra and thank them if I can get adsl2+ on Casuarina exchange, through Internode. If not, they still suck, and ill stay on 8mbit.

Also, are they limiting the upload bandwidth like they did with 8mbit? sooo 20mbit/512 kbit or something stupid?

My wife has been kicking along with the bigpond video hire thing for awhile now - she was loving it, recently they "upgraded" even that service so that now the previously easy to use list interfaces force you to constantly drill down (read- reload overbloated web pages) to confirm exactly which movies you're looking at.

For anyone that whats the check the other prices. The 2nd last adsl2+ plan is "okish" by Australian standards anyway. I currently pay "04 with Internode for an 8mbit plan with 30gb dl limit. Although I guess you don't count uploads and theres a lot of free content and good customer service. Ohh and ya don't have to feel like your supporting some pos corporation.

i pay around "90/mo for 60/60gb limit, static ip, business support etc etc.

a 30gb adsl2 with node is $74.95, just in case you were curious :P

Looks like there's potential for them to HAVE to offer it wholesale.
I'd be interested to see what sort of pricing an ISP like Internode would be able to offer for 2+ on Telstra hardware, in comparison to offering it on their own network. Surely it would have to be more, as their 8 meg plans are currently more expensive than 2+.

Regardless of how it happens, it is still a step in the right direction - no matter how small.

Uploads means forget torrents because your 6 gig torrent? Well lets work it out:

Assuming you get 500kb/sec down and 100kb/sec up That seems to be a good speed for a fast torrent from personal experience.

6Gb = 6291456kb.
At 500kb/second it will take ~12583 seconds or about 3.5 hours.
Uploading at 100kb/second = 1258300kb or about 1.2gig.

So your 6gig download is now a 7.2gig download. Congrats.

it's also likely 'illegal content' so you should stfu and deal with it.

the real crime of the caps is that they're designed to force you to purchase content from telstra instead of the competition (itms for example).

Actually not necessarily illegal. Linux distros, all the freaking WoW patches, Machinima, etc...you should know there is plenty of stuff that you can get of massive size thats perfectly legal.

no kidding on the game demos. at around a gig a pop (at telstras rates of 15c/MB) a game demo costs "50 to download if you're over quota. (they can talk up their mirrors all they want. do they mirror the PSN or XBL?)

I lol'ed hard today. My mother, who is about as computer savvy as the stapler sitting next to me, today rang Telstra to cancel my existing 1.5 megabit liberty plan. When the woman asked why, she simply said because we can get it cheaper somewhere else. Within 15 minutes the woman had rang back with the offer of 20megabit internet, 25 gig download and shaped, meaning no excess charges. I know thats still not too good, but she offered it to me for up to 10 months for 'trial' with no plan on a monthly payment of $79.95, which I actually thought was a decent price.

The fact they have that bargaining power and were willing to offer that shows they are price gouging and nothing more.

after that you decide on which plan to go with which we will go with 25gig a month at $59 a month

On telstra uploads count towards your downloads, nobody else does that. Also on Telstra its "50/gig over your cap (No shaping option) vs $6/gig over with Westnet for example (Has shaping options as well).

In the short term it might seem OK, but I'd go with someone else, in Melbourne Id go with Westnet as their customer support shits all over everyone elses or TPG as they have by far the best plans.

IF you want Telstra then go for:

3mths free 20mbit plan with 25gb plan (shaped to 64k/s) @ $99.95
If you have the phone service already with telstra then you can get a further "0 off your line rental (not to be mistaken with the "0 you already would get with bigpond).
If you have a mobile service single billed then you can turn that into $20 off line rental.
e.g Homeline Plus "9.95 (w/ mobile SBed $9.95, normally $29.95) + 20mbit/25gb $99.95 = "19.90 after the 3 mths has free. You get that "0/20 off line rental the whole life of contract.

24mth plan as Self install, you get modem free ("29 otherwise). you can change plan at any time at no cost (but it will pro rata) and to move the service it's $55.00.

I personally went with another provider and paid "50 a month for a slower speed.
I have Bigpond here at home now and i'm happy with it.

anuy plan above $39.95 you will get that 3mth free offer, if you go over the 60gb limit there are charges as it is a non-shaped plan, only 12gb and 25gb plans are shaped. So to get your money's worth if you went to the 60gb plan for the first 3 months they would be free and you could lower it to the 25gb after those 3 mths, but you'd have to be careful not to go over that 60gb limit.
