Credit Card Frauded

For the second time in 8 months, my credit card or credit card details have been swiped and illegal transactions have been placed on it. First time was internet based, when a bookmaker in england ive never had an account with (Coincidental concidering im in the business), made 3 transactions totalling about $700. Took about a month, but i got my money back from the good people from Commonwealth, who did nothing but good work. That was in June/July last year.

And now, for something completely different, someone has actually done a complete copy of my credit card including the magnetic stripe and pin number located inside it, not just the number and CCV. They made two transactions from the smallest place in WA. A place ive never even heard of before. Concidering ive never been there, how my credit card (Which ive never lost or had stolen) got to that location and was used in two cash advances (which are the hardest transactions to fraud according to the bank dude) is beyond me.

The most likely case, is my card was swiped in Singapore in a place i used it (never remember using it in shops, i thought i only used cash, even when i bought my phone for "000, i used cash) and because it was an australian card, sold the details to an australian CC fraud syndicate and then procceeded to steal my money :P

I'm pretty careful with my Transactions and Credit card, but this shit has still happened twice. So if you do have one, make sure you keep it safe and check all transactions. Because this shit can easily happen, these blokes are pretty good. Apparently this type of fraud is extremely difficult to do, and the guy had not heard of anything like this happening in australia, he said it's usually SE Asia.

Its strange because those new chips on the card are supposed to help stop this sort of straight up card copy...

OK traveling to asian countrys get a new credit card(easy to do these days) and cancel it when you get back only way to be safe.

Those fraud guys are incredibly ellaborate.

There are various techniques you should use when doing that sort of thing overseas (cash advance from machine).
Cover the numbers as soon as they come out of the wallet, and as you put it in the machine. Check the slot of the machine to ensure there's no 'tape' or anything that looks like it might be unusual to see there. Tap on the front panel. If it feels flimsy, it's a fake front. And yes, they do exist! Almost all ATM fronts are heavy grade industrial plastic or metal as a theft deterant.

Seriously though - I can't even imagine how the **** they would do that.
Especially since you're so careful with your card after last time :/

i watched a show on tv on how they steal your credit card information,

When your at an atm try and grab the place you put your card, sometimes they put a plastic cover with a card reading device over the top of the normal card holes
(this is something i Always check for)

When using your credit card look at the swipe machine and make sure it doesnt go through two different machines.

Another thing to check for, If they swipe your card through a machine and they say "oh this machines not working lets try another one"

That is very sus and i would report your card stolen the moment you leave the shop.

Wow didn't know about all this. Even after going to China, Hong Kong and Singapore still haven't had this happen to me. Even tried a lot of atm's in China till I found one that worked. Next time I travel will get a new visa and cancel it when I'm back :0

Retailers have been told when a chip card is presented they MUST use the chip and not to swipe the card, so the security features of the chip can be used. Unfortunately the new cards with chips in them (I have two) still have the magnetic strip and can be cloned in the same way as normal and therefore used in ATM's and online transactions.

Heh, my chipped cards have never had them treated as chipped cards, just swipe & sign.

If they have the facility they must use it is my understanding.

I was in a small shop in country South Australia today and even they could use the chip on my card.

i've only see a couple of machines that would even support them, it seems nobody knows how to use them

The only time I had it used extensively was overseas actually... I think it prompted them to insert the chip after swiping for further verification but I'm not actually sure

First point, is singapore is a seriously fastidious country, and they hang you for spitting on the sidewalk, so very little crime is done. i only used cash advances from the Hongkong Shanghai Banking Coporation ATM's, and the only ONE place i used my Credit card was at the Hotel i was staying. All the ATM's in Singapore are seriously high tech, and it would be almost impossible to **** with them without someone noticing (the ones i used anyway)

And also, why the **** would they go to all the trouble of coping the magnetic strip if they will just go and give them to someone in ****ing Dwellingup, Western Australia?

I would say they are most likely going to be court in australia compared to singapore, and even what they could do is go into Malaysia (like going to palmerston) and use a shitty ATM there thats not filmed. It makes little sense to me.

"500 went missing off of my credit card after I returned from Singapore/Malaysia after Christmas. The only thing is, I am almost 100% sure I didn't use it while I was over there, so lord knows how it happened. :S

maybe its a tax deducted automatically when u walk through them metal detector looking gates in customs????
