I dont know about the rest of you, but i really really miss gaming on a Friday night on the GU server with GU'ers and non GU'ers alike. From what info i have on the situation we will need someone, based in Sydney preferably, who has experience with rack mounted server and hardware and basic knoweledge of Linux, enuff to report accurately what problems would prevent remote access. Prefernce for GU members is there, but we really need someone who is dedicated to the gaming movement of Australia.

If you think you fit the bill, or know someone who is keen to fit the bill, get in contact with me, Daniel, at

with contact details and relevant experience listed

Thanks

Eater

Post 3

Post 4

Long time member, infrequent visitor.

Post 5

what about gunz?

Post 6

Wheres u at GunZ!!

Post 7

I might have someone, whats the suburb the server is in?

Post 8

Its in the City itself.

Post 9

silly idea maybe, but can the server(s) be moved to adelaide?

Post 10

i think we get free hosting in syd for our rack server

Post 11

Yes - true.

Sydney - dan favour - $0
Adelaide - no favour - $300-1000

Post 12

For $300 or so per year for seamless IT/OD support I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to raise the money...

May I open the Save Our Server fund with a pledge of $50? :)

Post 13

If it was per year then yes :)

Unfortunately those figures are per month....

Post 14

Ah. My bad. Quite a bad bad.

Post 15

can we put together a formal proposal to internode for free or heavily discounted hosting.
we could plug their services or something in return.

Post 16

What we're doing would be seen as competition for their own games network - never in our wildest dreams would they offer us hosting at discounted rates, if at all.

Post 17

I have passed on some details to Eater, hopefully my mate can help out.

Post 18

Ill be giving him a call tonight around 6 my time.

Post 19

any updates?

Post 20

The guy that has the 2nd CPU (my mate in canberra who has setup all the other servers in the rack we are using - ie: perfect guy) has been flatout with work and unable to go - BUT has just found out he will be in Sydney in about 2 weeks and will both fix the box AND upgrade it at the same time.

So about 2 weeks from now we'll be back and bigger than ever.

Post 21

Yeah. Finally I can have my friday laugh back.

Post 22

pooooooooooondaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Post 23

isa twitching
B 3-2
B 6-2
GO ! GO ! GO !

Post 24

thankyou boys! i cant wait to have the server again :)

Post 25

So is it happening this week??

Post 26

Week or so yeah - don't want to constantly hassle the guy that will be taking time off his work to do it for free... suffice to say yes it will happen and yes soon.

Post 27

Well you can tell him he will be hailed a hero by thousands of geeks.
Personally I would throw in a 6 pack :D.

Post 28

m3ow!? just checking to see if its online? I wouldnt mind having a big fat TF2 bash next friday with some GUers! That been the 2/5/08! Bring your beer and get your TS mic's ready!

Post 29

Still offline. Any idea when the servers will be back online??

Post 30

The server has been removed from its home in Sydney as it could not be rebooted when tried this week.

Its on its way to OD in Adelaide (if not here already) to fix. Then we have to wait for a few more weeks to send it back to Sydney and get someone to install and boot it back up.

Post 31

any chance we can beg someone in SA to house our server?
internode maybe hehe

Post 32

Not a hope, costs too much. Just found out that the server is still waiting to be couriered. Wont be in Adelaide until next week.

Post 33

I might be heading up to sydney for a day trip in 2 weeks. I can probably fit in an hour or so to plug it in.

Post 34

any news on the server?

Post 35

Look up two posts!

Post 36

instead with all the donations GU gets, if there are some still? can we just pay for a dedicated ADSL2+ line into OD's or recs house?

Post 37

GU does about 50gig traffic a month. And that's JUST the website - throw gameservers into the mix and it's nowhere close to being a doable proposition. I'll be redoing the box from scratch while it's here and have a few other ideas on how to make sure we don't have extended downtimes again - more on that soon.

Post 38

got to remember, most of GU's traffic is outbound. ADSL2+ is not well suited to handling that task.

Post 39

how much does T3 cost?

Post 40

you'd have to move to America for it. australia doesn't do T-x lines. but the equivalent is basically cost prohibitive. the gu hosting is a good deal, and there is more redundancy and remote rescue options planned for the server to hopefully avoid this in the future

Post 41

excellent... and in the future when my brother isnt working in sweden he travells to sydney alot, and has experience in linux and server hardware :)

Post 42

how much is a dedicated 10mbit/10mbit line worth? Surely that would be more then enough for a webserver and a game server

Post 43

If it costs anything more than $0/month, then I'd have to say it's more expensive.

Post 44

ohh, we getting free hosting at the moment?

Post 45

Do us all a favour and read the complete thread before posting.

Ring optus and ask them how much it is for a 10 / 10 mbit optic link

*laughs* you cant afford it

Post 50

I know how much it costs from telstra, optus cant be much different.

I know i cant afford it. Its a joke...the cost....

Post 51

No news on server?

Post 52

It's at my place getting rebuilt as we speak - paladin has sent over some more parts for it to and should get them any day. Redoing the who thing from scratch (take the opportunity to format eh).

Post 53

I'm out of action.

My game is now out of the box.

Might consider paintball, but damn, it's waaaaaaayyyy ugly.

I believe I speak for everyone when I say this: lolwut?

Post 55

well clearly his game is no longer, as they say, "in the box".
Now either he has removed the wrapping, or just opened the box and removed the cd's.
Either way, we're in for a great time here.

Here live with the story as it happens, is Asian reporter Trisha Takinawa.

Post 56

is the server alive.....

Post 57

It's alive - I've just had to move house as the owner wanted to come home :( Moved into a new place a few days ago so will have the server sorted asap.

Post 58

kickass, well done OD :)

Post 59

sweet i haven't played tf2 since the server went down... i refuse to play on node servers....

Post 60

So... whats the G. O. for tonight?

Post 61

I'm assuming nothing then... *cries* no procrastination for me then.

Post 62

The server might be sorted but its 1,400km away from its server rack in Sydney. It will be a few weeks yet before it gets back online.

Post 63

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Post 64

Who hoo, Forums are back up!

Post 65

Post 66

Done as of a few days ago - now just awaiting transport to Sydney and installation in the hosting facility.
