I'm thinking of getting a PSP to fill in public transport time with, but don't know too much about them.
Are they still 'current', or is it's popularity (and release of new game titles) in decline?
What makes me ask is that I was in a Dick Smith store the other day, and the 'PSP' shelves were all full of PS2 and other games. I didn't spot a single PSP title anywhere....
I know DS never have the most extensive range of anything, but it made me wonder if the console is on the way out.
With the soon to be released PlayTV for the PS3 you can actually record TV onto the PS3 and transfer the files to the PSP.
My brother had one while he was here for Christmas. I was impressed with the graphics. As for games there are loads.... just not in DSE. Goto EB games etc for PSP titles.
Dick Smith isn't really a recognised gaming store :P
In the last few months, the PSP has had some incredible things happening to it, mainly thanks to integration with the ps3.
Remote play is awesome if you have any sort of media collection, Allowing you to access it on the fly from anywhere you can get wireless internet.
Also the games coming out for the psp are some of the best seen in years, Metal Gear portable ops, Patapon, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Ratchet and Clank: Size matters, Secret Agent Clank and Warhammer 40k Squad Command are all top top quality games. And if your into tactical RPGS you will be spoiled for choice
Also coming this year, for the new slim psp, is the ability to use it as a skype phone, GPS, mobile TV, Camera, and other fancy things.
So yeah, in short the PSP is not in a slump, if anything, it's just about to hit it's stride, even after the failure of UMD movies.
Working in a retail store with a pretty large game section i can say without a doubt, that NO the psp is not on a rise. sales have been falling dramatically for quite a while now and we are no longer stocking umd movies or psp accessories any more. psp games barely take up half a shelf and the psp itself is hardly ever sold.
not just us either, even eb games has a largely diminished psp range.
I think the PSP is now outselling everything else (Perhaps not the wii) in Japan now. So it will at least get Japanese games built for it :P. Meh I have been tempted to get one for patapon but might pass.
the psp by itself, is one great piece of engineering.
the problem is the lack of AAA titles, and titles which utilise its features and portability to its full potential. metal gear portable ops was one of those games that contradictated tho (wi fi searching for soliders = fun). however, when i first heard of the psp, i was waiting for all the great rpg goodness i could have with it. 3 + years later and still no uber rpgs with most being ports of old ps1 games. final fantasy crisis core tho may change that
dont get me wrong. i have a psp and love what i personally can do with it (homebrew, remote play for movies and music, custom firmwares, select games (oooh god of war = sexy) )
so ask yourself. are you just going to buy a psp purely for gaming? is there a title thats a must have for you? if you answered yes for the former and no the latter, then the psp isn't the system for you. you're better off getting a ds.
Quote from mepm;341287: i had 2 when they first came out, mostly due to the homebrew and emulators available. but the actual psp games did not impress me much at all.
so its worth tracking down an old one though with 1.5 firmware if u like that sorta stuff
You can downgrade any psp using the kick battery method now, all you need is some skill.
Want to get a psp soon, so I went to jb hifi today and had a look, and they have a couple different packs.
They have the normal psp slim with nothing extra for $274, then they have the game coloured psps that included the game(the simpsons) for $299 and they also have the psp slim with media manager and 4gb card for $344.
I should be able to get better prices with haggling, but which pack should I get? What about colours? Black or white?
version 3.80 m33-5 hacked firmware + game on memory stick? win. features are awsome, i liked playing my ps1 games of my ps3 while on the can, watching tv, playing games online, etc.
games.... patapon, god of war, locoroco, ridge racer 2, tekken 5.5, castlevania... all good :) only bitch about psp is the size of it, it isnt really good to lug one around just for music, but its a good time waster....
oh the mod is a bitch too
u dont need to track one with 1.5 version anymore, all youll need is to grab urself a new one and do a pandora's battery "battery hack" on your psp, dont worry if you brick it either, u can unbrick it with the battery hack :) happy huntings.
get white, its hot, when i first got my white psp (first in nsw) it was $450 bucks =/
Thanks K_space. Yesterday I bought the media manager pack with the 4gb card, for $344, and its cool. I copied a few songs on it and they played fine. The remote play is trippy as. I was listening to my mp3s from the ps3 on the psp.
I think you've omitted your sarcasm smiley...... :D
A mate is going to Hong Kong soon, where according to the PSP website you can still get the 'value pack' for an RRP equiv to $240, or the slim & lite alone for the equiv of about "80 IIRC.
You may note also if it hasn't already been mentioned, the PSP is region free so you can import games from America and Japan. Just got my copy of Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core from America, and all I can say is that game alone will account for the PSP's current rise.
