I ninjaed the release service pack off a torrent a few weeks back and it made a phenomenal difference. That + tweak UAC puts vista pretty much where I want it. My only real complaint now is the vista style start menu sucks but the alternative is the Win98 start menu and that also sucks, I need an XP menu.

agreed, I prefer the way the XP menu popped out when viewing files in folders instead of the crappy way it does it now.

Vista Start menu is awesome. Just did a fresh install and a SP1 patch and the difference in the speed is to what i think is because of the format and not the difference between the hot fixes.

Heres my experience of SP1.
I was one of the many reported people who downloaded SP1 but couldn't install it. For me the reason was some corrupt files that couldn't be overwritten. I had to spend time trawling through forums and KB's to find that basically the issue I had required a full reinstall. "Great (or words to that effect)" I thought, just another reason for everyone to get on my back because I like Vista and now it fails me. I went ahead and put the Vista DVD-ROM into the drive and what happened next has only reinforced why I personally like Vista so much.
SP1 did enough checks on my original system to know that if it started to install it would screw everything up so it didn't, impressive. The reinstall it turns out wasn't required either. I put in the Vista DVD and decided to choose the upgrade option not the full reinstall option. My understanding was that the upgrade option was for users upgrading from XP but it turns out it can also be a repair for a current Vista OS (there is no repair option when you put the DVD in the drive like there is with XP).
Vista reinstalled the entire OS over my current OS keeping the same installed programs, desktop etc whilst replacing the old OS. I've never repaired XP and have it boot into my desktop with every program and setting in the same place before the repair. Once installed/repaired Vista downloaded and installed with minimal user input all the important hotfixes incl SP1 and now the OS is better then before. Like I said, I've done similar "repairs" on XP in the past only to find that settings had been changed, drivers were removed, network and Internet connections gone and the original issue sometimes still remained. I had none of those issues, once again I was impressed.
The fact that I had issues in the first place will give XP users plenty of ammunition against Vista and rightly so, this shouldn't have happened in the first place. The changes that VistaSP1 brings are small and I know most XP users wont change to Vista because SP1 is out, but I guess my point is that I've had Vista for over a year now and unlike XP, OS for OS 1 year into their lives I find Vista is far more stable, reliable and useable then I found XP to be.
If you have Vista don't be taken in by all the scaremongering, install SP1.

that's funny, i installed vista over a year ago and have rebooted maybe 6 times. problems? user error imo.

Once I got over everything being shoved around to different spots I liked a Vista a lot more than XP and so far havent rebooted in like a month. In fact since I installed it the only reboots I had were caused by an overheating GPU thanks to one of the fans failing and not Vista.

Woot downloaded SP1 last night and chose to install it just before bed, glad i did at bed time cause it took like an hour : /
Installed smooth and system runs some what quicker so quite happy. Been using Vista for like 8 months now and can honestly say havnt had many problems, never even had to reboot. Vista > XP imo

Been using vista for about a year never had any problems with it. Once I got used to the new layout etc, and after it had done its indexing thing (took about a week and ran like a dog) Vista was a bunch of awesomeness, unless transferring large files. Thats been fixed noticeably in SP1 and now I don't see much to complain about. It is definitely better than XP was one year into its life, remember when everyone was saying how XP sucked and you would never ever pry 2k off their systems? Same shit different OS.

although i have avoided vista like the plague, i have been waiting for the service pack to be released, as the same thing with all other Microsoft OS, they always have problems with new releases...
the fact i can use more than 4 gigs of ram at once is just pure awesome sauce, and im looking forward to having 2x 1 gig 9800 gtx cards with 5 gigs of ddr2/3 ram...

One of my computers still runs 2K. Apparently some board person has installed Vista with the Win2k Explorer :)

Does anyone know how many times you can install Vista Ultimate 64bit OEM/Retail? Some people claim infinitely as long as you have the same mobo. What if you want to upgrade?
