I was really looking forward to this release but 2Meg camera and no MMS and no Video means no from me. Very dissapointing.
Looks like I'll have to choose the HTC Diamond (or Rapheal if you want a slide out qwery keyboard), the Sony Xperia X1 or maybe the new touchscreen phone announced by Samsung today.

i really, really couldnt' give a shit about video calls. i dont need to see a person to hear what they're saying. and mms.. really the only time i use it is to take pictures of concerts that i'm at to tease knight with.

You cant deny that the iphone is feeding the appetite of the masses in millions of units. People (not everyone) want an all in one solution and despite its failings the iphone is argueable the best of all the 'smartphones'. Other people just want a phone, that's fine too its not like there aren't options for you guys. But for US$200 you can have a fantastic piece of hardware, beating the cost of most smartphones out there.
The iphone is going to make a killing and now that Telstra are on board I'll be getting one. I've been wating for a phone that has push email, GPS, camera (2MP will do but 3.2 or greater is needed), wifi. The 3rd party apps that are going to flood the market for the phone I'm sure will throw up enough to justify the cost up front easily.

iphones have very little do to with practicality. most of the time you get the latest and greatest to show your friends. new phones aren't doing a whole lot that the previous versions couldn't, but as usual apple make it a niche product, give it gimmicks and everyone thinks its great.

I can live with most of the failings but I wasn't aware of the no voice dialing thats a worry as I use that a lot in the car.
Telstras pricing will dictate what I do. The alternative for me is the HTC Diamond but thats on an $80 (non cap) plan or pay $999. iphone should be well cheaper. Time will tell.

My mobile contract expired just recently and I picked up the new iphone yesterday. Maybe I am just used to my old nokia and haven't given the iphone much of a chance but I am a little disappointed.
As an example I wasn't able to transfer over my MP3 ringtones apparently I need an application to make this happen?
The MMS has been talked about to death but yes I also miss this.
On a positive note I like the wifi and being able to check my email at anytime during the day makes it attractive. Also the smooth interaction with Comsec makes trading shares pretty easy.

10 seconds of product research would have let you know about the ringtone drama, but it's not too difficult to get around. on a mac, use garageband. on windows, use Efiko Software: iPhoneRingToneMaker

under what conditions? constantly using 3g services/wireless/gps will drain the battery in about 12 hours.

i cbf charging last night after using it as an ipod most of the day, browsing a few web pages, playing a few games on it and again as an ipod today. made a few calls sent a few messages and its still at around 50% battery.

Much appreciated! Honestly I didn't hear about the mp3 ringtone issue until the clerk at the store told me about it. She did say that a work around was already in play.

Just a quick note, apparently you CAN receive MMS's through an custom app supplied by Telstra (somewhere)... That's what the guy at the Telstra shop told me when I picked up mine ($850, no contract, bought outright). I then proceeded to say, I don't give a shit about mms. I was a little suprised by the lack of voice dial feature, but then, why need it when the only 'real' time you use it is in cars... When you're driving, which is illegal anyway in Australia.
Honestly, it does exactly what I want it to, in a form that's a pleasure to use... Plus I no longer have to carry around an ipod. It works for me. ^_^

Initially I had buyers remorse about getting an iphone but I've had it for a few months now and it's really grown on me. Getting email pushed to my phone, ability to trade shares throughout the day and the gps mapping was gold when I was in Syd recently for a course.
If you really need the video recording you can jail break your phone and gain this feature along with many others.
In my opinion it's a win.

i dont understand why people are getting upset about other people wanting an iPhone?? would you advise against the purchase of the latest BMW because it doesnt have a flappy paddle gearbox, four power sockets in the boot, and a light in the glove box while this hyundai cartwheel has ALL of that for half the price?

I just wonder why everyone thinks the iPhone is so great over other phones with similar functions? It's like those mac vs pc adds they annoy the crap out of me because all apple ever do is act like their products are so revolutionary because they limit the options and "focus" on the "cool" stuff. I think iPhone is a great little product no doubt but I just don't think it holds any sort of vast superiority over say the Samsung Omnia or the Nokia N95. And just because you own one doesn't make you any more tech savy or cool.

Well, the first point of superiority over the omnia, was actually being out before the omnia.
A second (imo) point of superiority is the user interface. Given two phones with the same featureset, user interface wins out.
A third point of superiority is the app store business model - i can write and distribute applications to a potential audience of millions, without having to do any hosting or marketing of my own.
Basically, as i've said before, repeatedly - the thing that makes the iPhone worthwhile to me is that it makes me want to use it, whereas previous phones were things i pretty much carried out of necessity, rather than desire.

i lolled quite hard at OD's pic though I'm inclined to agree with pala.
every time I'm phone shopping I always focus on the specs/functions but I find that once the phone is bought I use very few of them. Iphones are very cool little gadgets, if it had a decent (5mp) camera I'd buy it right now. though I only really use a phone for calls/txt/camera anyway so it would mostly be for the shiney new gadget factor.
