Photo shoot locations in Darwin

I'm doing a fashion shoot with this model soon and I need a location in Darwin. I was thinking somewhere indoors because the sun outside is a bit harsh. I wanted to do it at the convention centre but the open thing finishes today and it'll only be open when there's a conference or something booked in there now. I thought maybe the gun torrents or one of those old houses that are open to the public, or one of those buildings near the bus depot in town that have ochre rocks on the walls, or Lizards bar and grill (I think it's them anyway) that have the wood floors/walls and mini waterfall thing going on. Anyway you guys are probably better at suggesting locations because I know there are lots of places I've never been to in Darwin. I'm open to anything at the moment.

You could try Nightcliff at the cliffs @ sunset... or perhaps ask out the back of Char. There are some nice walls and stuff there... Hmmmm... not really sure other than that. Could try Holmes Jungle if you want to get that jungle-type feel. You could do some cool stuff if your model isn't afraid of mosquitos and leeches.. lol. Although for the last two locations you might need a decent flash unit...

I'm still in the research/price comparison stages for a lighting kit, so I'm trying to think of locations with the right amount of natural light too. I was thinking of doing a shoot after lunch somewhere, and going to the beach for a sunset silhouette shot.

After lunch the light would be incredibly intense. I'd go for early morning or late afternoon where the intensity is not so bad. As for shooting locations it depends what kind of fashion and look you are aiming for. Maybe near parliament house using the pillars to pose, or in that vicinity the ruins of the old post office across from Browns Mart. Also helps if you know what colours shes going to be wearing so you can pick a location where she won't blend and the stuff she's wearing will pop.

I was going for after lunch because I am rarely awake before lunch when I'm not working :P I asked her to wear an above-the-knees black, white or grey dress with black boots. I was thinking of doing a few black and white shots, or maybe putting her against a colourful background. I might get her to bring a few outfits along, I'm not certain yet.

I've postponed this shoot for ages already so I don't want her to wait any longer for equipment to arrive and I like to really think out my buying decisions, especially on technology. Thanks for the link though, it will come in handy for next time.

You've got a few of her pics on that site, but I think to get a better understanding of which locations in Darwin would suit this model for a photoshoot, you should post a few more pics of her.

I see her most recent shoots are for the "Just nudes" Exhibition Ipswich Photography Club April 2008. As these are the most recent, these would probably help best.

All I want is to provide the best possible advice to help this budding young model's career...

She is an experienced model... and I don't have any more photos of her, since I haven't taken them yet. The only person that could post more would be her, and she's already up to her limit on that site. I think she'd be happy with whatever location I suggest.

what about the old oil tank tunnels? =) or under daily street bridge!

Lets see, the Wesleyan church at the botanical gardens, possibly all sorts of places at the gardens acutally, go scope it out. The old town hall ruins. The cliffs at the bottom of Darwin High. Some of those fancy smancy marinas with all the yachts? The old prison buildings at Gunn Point might be good too, but its a bit of a way to go.

Looking at her profile images on her MM profile, shes done a lot of indoors and studio work. It would be nice to put her outside. Specifically where isn't the issue, more so the colours surrounding her because you are probably going to crop tightly and shallow out the depth of field.

There are a lot of buildings in the city built from that ochre/sandstone coloured brick and I think she'd pop out of the picture against a wall of that colour simply because of her tanned skin and the black/white/greys you had in mind for her to wear. For some reason I can't photographically picture her in a natural surrounding unless its high fashion/art or swimwear.

I'm just going off visual memory here but you may want to just scope out places in the city and keep a few in mind and when you see her on the day of shooting you can finalise your choice. Maybe even see if she can suggest what she wants since she is an experienced model?

You can borrow my studio lights if you like. They're pretty easy to use. If you need a lightmetre you can borrow that as well.

actually parliment house has this nice fountain thing overlooking the beach. My friends got married there

Btw I've never heard of or haven't been to a lot of the places people are mentioning, e.g. those in toasthall's post, so if you could describe them that would be great.

As leonami suggested I don't want to go somewhere that has lots of trees and crap. I like the building ideas :) Apparently parliament house is open every day but I don't know if you have to pay for a tour to get in or if you can just walk in by yourself for free.

Thanks for the offer Steve, I might take you up on it if I choose a location that needs some extra lighting. Might need a few pointers on how to use the equipment though - it's unknown territory for me.

They're pretty easy. there's a dial on them, you twist it right for more, twist it left for less. Work out a good 'medium' and you're all set. (test shot). So long as you have a flash sync port, or a flash unit (better to have speedlight then onboard flash, so you can adjust light away if necessary). and it'll sense it.

good photo, i like everything but the expression and the way her hair is sitting.

Yeah her hair was giving her the shits so she ended up putting it over her shoulders or in a bun for most of the photos.

So where are the rest of the photos?
