Star Trek Online: First Look At The New Star Trek MMO World

looks ****ing awesome to me. especially the green planet screenshot. wow.

Post 2

Greater potential than Star Wars in a mmo platform, imo.

Post 3

definately, but i love both universes, and the thought of flying a ship with 10-20 of my friends each doing different jobs together to have space dogfights really does turn me on.

Post 4

there was a preview of it on the star trek season 1 dvd set and thats been out for ages

Post 21

Intel HD Graphics huh? People with shitty laptops everywhere can rejoice :p

Post 22

Yeah I'm not sure that I like the engine it's being developed for/on; Cryptic games never really appealed to me visually.

Time will tell.

Post 23

STO is available for pre-order now on Steam and other digital delivery places. Game goes live Feb 2nd but pre-ordering lets you play the open beta which starts on the 12th and lets you start playing the game proper after the open beta closes, 2 days earlier than it goes on sale.

Some dude is playing the closed beta now and streaming the gameplay. Looks cool: Star Trek Online Closed Beta! on Justin.tv

Post 24

Anyone else getting this? The beta gameplay I'm watching does look pretty good. I just don't like it when he commentates. :P

I'll probably be bored by the end of beta, but may buy it just for that.

Post 25

i preordered my copy on steam aswell as from gamestop :)

you get extras if you buy the box - limmited edition shit yadda yadda :)

Post 26

So, you'll have two accounts? I'll have to reconsider my interest.

Post 27

Not necessarily, rec. Different pre-orders from different outlets both online and bricks and mortar came with different pre-order bonuses. My understanding is you just enter the key provided with the copy of the game to unlock that particular piece of content. I believe the "bonus content key" is distinct from the "serial" for the game itself.

So if you wanted the TOS uniform set that comes when you pre-order from Amazon.com AND the Trill character class you get from Best Buy AND the customised NX- prefix instead of the standard NCC- prefix you get if you buy from D2D then you'd buy it from 3 different places then enter the bonus content keys that came with each to unlock it all on the one account.

At least that's how I think it works, and I've mashed up the outlets and the bonuses a bit. I guess the idea was to make people buy the same game several times, and it seems to have worked. There's nothing stopping you on-selling the game itself after you've used the bonus content key though.

Marketing cynicism aside for a moment though, I am properly excited about the game. At first I was skeptical about their ability to pull off a decent Star Trek MMO since there hasn't been a decent Star Trek game (nevermind MMO) in 18 years, but as I've watched more clips and read more news I've managed to begin looking at STO as a game on it's own merit rather than trying to shoehorn what I see into what my expectations of the game should be.

I've pre-ordered the digital deluxe version from Steam and am waiting for the open beta to unlock sometime in the next few days.

Post 28

Just pre-purchased :)

Post 29

Re: Star Trek Online

*sigh, ok, I'm in.

Post 30

Can't pre-load once pre-purchased? And the beta is meant to be released today, or something? Bah! :)

Post 31

I guess you have to wait until it's the 12th in the US as well, mate. And no, doesn't look like there's a pre-load for it.

Post 32

Bloody yanks, always holding us up. Them and their damned fried chicken.

Post 33

You take that back! I'm vicariously offended by that racist slur!

Post 34

I had a game last night, only got to play about 30 minutes so far what I have seen is looking to be a good game. I made a character Sabuk (random name) of the USS Devron ;P
the controls are very simple and easy to work out in the end. The graphics are awesome so smooth on my system. I'll give it another whirl tonight but chances are i'll be pre ordering it by the end of the week :D :D :D

Post 35

*waits impatiently for Steam beta to unlock

Post 36

Just finished my first play session. After completing the tutorial I hooked up with rec and we did a couple of missions together.

Have to say overall the game is really cool. Graphics are superb and the game runs very smoothly. A little disorienting at first with all the things to learn, but any MMO is like that the first time you play.

Keep an eye out for me - my beta char is a Trill named Shitma Dax of the USS Essessyoo.

Post 37

Yeah the learning curve isn't the gentlest - but I expected that, having never invested any time in a mmorpg before. Enjoying it so far, though.

Star Trek Online: Collector's Edition - PC - EB Games Australia

Post 39

Cryptic have just announced their subscription fees, and it's pretty much what one would expect:

1 month USD"4.99
3 month USD$41.97
6 month USD$77.94

Also though, for a "limited time" (until the game proper launches maybe?) you can get:- A 12 month subscription for USD"19.99 (which is USD$60 cheaper than month-by-month), recurs at the same discounted price and comes with two additional character slots, or

- A Lifetime one-off subscription for USD$239.99 with two additional character slots AND you can create a "liberated" Borg character.
http://www.startrekonline.com/exclusive_specials

It's obviously hard to calculate the value of the lifetime subscription since there's no telling how long it'll keep my interest but I did some quick sums and I've been playing Eve Online on and off since 2004 (mostly off, admittedly) but I'd have subscribed for at least 24 months - which comes to USD$358.80 based on their pricing.

So I'm actually tempted to go for the lifetime sub on STO, moreso from an economy standpoint rather than bonuses. It is a pretty fun game and MMO-wise I tend to play intensely for several months and then put it on the shelf for a few months to a year and then come back to it so it'll be nice knowing I can jump straight back in without have to reorganise my sub.

Of course the thing could tank after 18 months, but even then I'd still have paid $20 less than on the 1-month recurring sub.

Decisions, decisions!

Post 40

I'll just do whatever you do. Don't let me down, Bam.

I think you've got too much love to devote to one game, rec. I'd be surprised if you kept on long after the beta finished anyway. :)

Post 51

Oh so there is a STO thread here, nice.

I got to Lt. 10 last night, but the servers crashed before I could figure out how to get promoted to Lt. Cmdr. 1

I have 47,000 space dollars saved up, in the hopes of being able to try out the various types of ships before the wipe.

I am really enjoying the game, it is very fun.

Have also enjoyed grouping with some of you guys.

Bring on live!

Post 52

Re: Star Trek Online

It's lt11 you need to get lc. You also have to spend your skillpoints to gain rank.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Post 53

Ah, that explains it. Hopefully the servers will be up tonight, and I can have a late night session, what with Aussie day tomorrow and all.

Post 54

you can play it tomorrow too - the wipe time is the 26th US time - and they wont trigger it til sometime into their work day. also, given the amount of server downtime that's happened the last few days, they may extend the beta a day or so to collect the last chunks of data they missed with the downtime (they did this with Champions - extending the beta right to the headstart, mind you one of those downtimes was caused by an intern http://gamers-underground.com/role-playing/31606-champions-newbie-epic-fail.html >< ).

Post 55

Sweet.

I have actually been very impressed with how Cryptic are handling themselves. Yeah there is a fair amount of downtime, but they are prompt with status updates and ETAs.

So many MMOs have had more downtime after they have gone live, and not even bothered with updates.

Post 56

In Oz the beta wrap up time works out to being around 12pm on Wednesday afternoon. The headstart for people who have pre-rdered is due to begin that on the weekend and the game officially launches on Feb 3rd according to Steam.

Post 57

w00t! Finally made it to Lt. Cmdr. last night and got to fly a cruiser for all of 15 mins before I went to bed. I probably won't get another chance to play with it before the wipe but I'm glad I did because it's made me more confident about a decision I have to make soon anyway - what career for my "proper" character. I think tactical + escort is the way to go for me. The cruisers just lack agility. They have more special powers and such, but I think I enjoyed combat more in my smaller beginner ship than I did in the cruiser; banking around, working on certain shields and maneuvering to open the window for that perfect torpedo opportunity. Very satisfying when it call comes together.

Post 58

yeah +1 on the tac escort. flitting between enemy ships is too much fun

Post 59

Protip: Go here and enter the key JIH MUSHA SOH to unlock "Wrath of Khan Admiral's Uniform". It's tied to your account so should survive the beta wipe. Don't know how long it will be valid for. Get cracking!

And in case you were wondering, the head-start begins at 4.30am CST on Saturday.

Post 60

hah awesome, thanks Dan :)

Escorts are good but frustrating at the same time.
Cannons interrupt each other (intended game mechanic) and the only ones worth using have a 45deg firing arc. In the Federation its more of an issue because they generally have lower auxiliary power / agility than Klingon BoP's.
I think you will see a tonne of Engineers too, and very few Tactical Captains. Main reason is that Tactical bonuses are primarily for ground engagement or augmenting ground combat skills :/

Personally I'm going Engineer with Cruisers. I love broadsiding and firing 3 - 4 phaser banks at my enemy :D
Also if you are going to go the Escort route; make sure you get a nice Turret for your aft section, preferably a disruptor.

Post 62

oh, i thought the thing with the escorts was that they had more weapons and speed than the cruisers but had less hull hitpoints - but looks like the cruisers get more weapons in the end too?

Post 63

I think Cruisers technically have more weapon slots; however Escorts have more forward facing slots than any other class; as they arent really designed for broad-siding targets.

They definitely have more maneuverability (holy shit i spelled that word right on my first go) than any other class of ship though.
Im actually pretty torn. I want to fly an Intrepid (science) a Defiant (escort); but also want a massive, hulking hull full of phaser banks (Cruisers) :(

Refer to my amazing comparison image.

I'm probably going same with the Eng+Cruiser route. The other thing is also what looks like to be that only escorts can get some weapons.

Fire it into groups of cruisers (or above) as they are generally slow moving.
I've used it and had some luck firing it into squadrons of fighters, but because they move so fast it's literally hit and miss.

I was playing around with Rapid Fire on my Escort after the latest patch that fixed the ability. My god. 2x Disruptor Cannons and 1x Phaser Cannons with rapid fire and Attack Pattern Alpha = dead enemy in seconds.

Not that I was there, but apparently the end of beta event was a massive invasion of Federation space by the Borg. People were getting creamed by Borg spheres all over the Sol sector, and there was pitched fighting against boarding parties on spacedock. Shame I missed it!

My favourite is the one from Star Trek 6 at 2:50 into that clip. I find myself always using the same delivery when I'm launching a torpedo volley to finish a damaged ship off. Oh, and when I'm boosting my shields I always use Sulu's delivery from the beginning of the same movie "Shields... SHIELDS!"

Yes, talking to myself is one of the things I love to do while I play STO. Jesus Christ, I'm such a geek.

Post 77

Also DVC - i think they did the same thing but with Klingons invading earlier in the day :D

Post 78

Worth waiting for launch to play the joined trill? I have nfi how those stats compare whether they're the equiv of 1/1000th fuckall or actually useful.

Post 79

If you want a joined trill you can just start a throwaway character now to unlock Klingons.

Post 81

found this The Engines Cannae' Take It!
Has some guides to what all those stats and abilities actualy mean.

Post 82

i have to say, his rule of not level-9ing your abilities needs some exemptions - eg: if you're using cannons on an escort you're mad not to level 9 all the cannon related skills - with rapid fire engaged even if the bonus from 8-9 works out to a negligible amount, if you don't 9/9/9 the related skills you're looking at a fairly substantial loss of DPS

Post 83

It depends if the 8 - 9 increase is more or less than investing it in a higher tier ability.

Post 84

It also depends on if its more value than dumping it somewhere else just to make the SP requirement for the next rank.

Post 85

lenko, no it doesnt - the 9/9/9 refers to all three tiers that affect them eg: [energy weapons][cannons][disruptors] - yes you can squeeze more dmg out by cranking the heavy escort skill (boost to .. alpha maneuvers (i think it is)) - but i dont think anything else will give anywhere near the almost consistent sheer dps boost for your cannons than 9/9/9ing them + rapid fire

(lols that i'm making these comments and haven't even hit commander yet)

Cryptic Wants Star Trek Online Players To Explore Their Ships | Kotaku Australia

Post 88

I'm looking forward to the missions on your ship that get triggered after a random planet mission - return to space only to have your crew falling sick so have to find a cure. missions of that ilk should be cool, providing reasons for you to wander your own corridors (no, Lenko, I don't mean like THAT), and lack of resolution should leave your ship operating under capacity until you've addressed it.

State of the Game post on the STO site has mentioned a few things they're working on right now for the game: Star Trek Online

Quote:

Some of the few things on the way:

* Respec
* Death Penalty
* Difficulty Slider
* More open auto-fire
* Replayable missions
* Improving Memory Alpha
* Fixing those Commodity missions

Quote:

New Klingon ships? Oh, my yes. And they look...awesome. Re-specs are also coming, of course. All of Cryptic can't wait to see that particular feature out the door. New PvP maps and Fleet Actions are rather nice, too.

Quote:

* Who are the Undine and what drives them?
* How can we better exploit the Genesis System to create even more compelling content?
* Where can we boldly go next? Where shall we take exploratory missions, as there's so much potential there?
* Which faction should be playable next? Romulan? Cardassian? Pakled? Dominion? Horta? Okay, not so much the Pakleds.

Some nice stuff mentioned there and a lot more in the actual article.
