Been to all the so called best fish and chips places in Melbourne. But they're all tasteless dry thin wafers of cardboard.
Arrghh. Placing plane ticket to go back to Darwin just to get some decent fresh fish in 5...4...3.....
Our regular place is the one in Fannie Bay, not sure how the wharf ones are these days though.

Ha to you all. We had homemade chips and self-caught Golden Snapper for tea last night.
I would say you should have been there, but we gutsed the lot.
You ned to go into the burbs jay where all the wogs and asians do it. they do some pretty good fry ups.

The crap they believe is the pinnacle is pathetic to say the least.
Balentines in Palmo rockz for fish and chips ^_^ Also Lisa's Kitchen in Coconut Grove does awesome chips fresh as. I haven't taste their fish yet though.
Jay I've been trying to find a decent place too! All the shitholes i've been to served fake calamari rings *vomit*.

Rex Hunts (Port Melb)
Bottom of the Harbour (Brighton)
Jim's Fish & Chips (Northcote)
They come with a lot of praise.. would be keen to check them out unless you've heard/experienced otherwise.
balantyne's sure is good... on the few occasions they actually get your order right :(
My cousin has a mate in Melbourne whose folks run a shop in Albert Park. F-knows what it's called but I remember it being ace.
Otta's fish and chip shop do alright in melbourne northern suburns while I was down there. Heading away from the city going up high st when you get to preston it's on your left just after you cross murray rd.
eastern burbs. blackburn & heathmont have some good ones... or eastern side beach pubs in rosebud and portsea are pretty good.
only take away i travel into the city for it pizza from lygon.

omg i thought everyone would have known by now, for decent fish you gotta do it your-self, with all the crap that goes around anyway. Most places only purchase farmed and cheap product, do your self a favour and visit the fish markets near the duck pond and cook some up your self. All of that is caught wild in teh territory, great fish. Trust me ive worked out there, instense stuff, but tastes great :)

I dunno I been there, the fish tastes meh... In fact I have yet to find an actual fish n chips type-o-place with fish I can say is enjoyable, edible yes, but not enjoyable, does nothing for teh taste buds.
Oh and as for chips, chips are all the same most everywhere, if not they are still very close. Cook your own... otherwise Jingili normally to fill my chip requirements.

So while grabbing my weekly supply of canned asian diabetes in a can, we tried the Fish and chips from this place. As well as the one to the left run by an asian couple.
Fish was moist, soft and service was good. Much oil was to be had, so much that it was still dripping from the fish. I was certain I could probably top up the car's supply up while I was at it, while moist it was still tasteless. We had the flake (GGShark) and Snapper. The snapper was a bit better, but that's a given. Batter was quite ordinary and soggy - which is probably related to the oil issues. Chips were good, as far as nice fat chips go.
The asian one a few stores back to the left, nevermind that. :p

If you squint really hard, there's a fish and chips place on this google streetview - might be that one as there aren't too many fish and chips places out there. Most of the populous in that area require candles to go along with their food and for their fish to have been grilled with herbs and wankoff.
It's opposite of Andrew's hamburgers who do really awesome patty and steak burgers. As the guy who's crossing the road to increase his BMI happily enough is testament to their glory.

Babka's - awesome bakery, all freshly baked - if you can ever get there in time to get the hot foods before they disappear. Unfortunately the nature of the place is so far left most of the customers are generally wearing wanky I have a non-conformist hair and glasses, and you'll run out of fingers and toes counting the number of save-the-non-nuclear-free-forest-no-to-killing-refugees stickers on the cars parked just outside.
