Never used any newsgroups before but internode offers free connection the the giganews and astraweb servers. I've downloaded "grabit" to test the waters and all I can say so far is it's painfully slow. I've tried surfing for any sort of index or search engines for them without much luck (I'm more used to bittorrent).
Any kind soul want to push me in the right direction? My torrents do transfer at decent speeds depending on availability and seeders though really, newsgroups seems to go at full speed from start to finish.
Trying to connect to a server then having to download 100MB+ just to view whats hosted is kind of annoying surely there's a better way to find what your after?
v3.newzbin.com <------costs like " a month... but the best Usenet search engine bar none. (Just found out you need a member to invite you... I was, but ain't no more... ask rec).
Use Newsbin to download... You'll find it around the traps.

Binsearch -- Usenet search engine and Ninan as the downloader/par checker/unrar'er
both have never failed me
I normally use binsearch and nzbindex to find what i want NZBIndex.nl - We index, you search
and use sabnzbd do download. This does all the unpacking etc. Im on 1500/256 plan and this downloads at max speed 150-160 kbs until finished as opposed to bittorrent where i get anywhere between 4-135 kbs.
There has been only a handful of files ive had to get from torrents in teh last 5 months.
Once you get it sorted you prolly wont go back to torrents.;)
