Don't buy it if you don't like it... but don't try and convince others not to buy it.
...and seriously, they're giving shit to Steam? I'm sure this decision is a little disappointing after what users were promised with L4D, but Steam are surely 10x better than any other game maker out there with their continual updates on their other games (ie. TF2). Seriously. They usually smash the other developers so surely users can forgive what is perhaps as simple as an oversight, instead of rallying against them?
I think the guy who Kotaku (?) interviewed the other day mentioned that it wasn't practical to update L4D the way they wanted to do. A major oversight perhaps? Perhaps. I still think people are being a bit over the top with a boycott petition...

omfg are they ****ing for real? in my eyes it needs to be a new titled release... extra weapons, dif ammo types, new characters, new special zombies, its a completely new package. I reckon the day light levels look sick.
I'm just hoping they combine the achievements so i dont have to re-earn them :P

doesnt mean im not still looking forward to playing the next incarnation of any of them though...

yeh and they say they are releasing it to early... i assume they've forgotten that its valve making it, so it will be delayed by 6 months to a year :P

L4D has had more replay value alone then most modern games anyway, additionally, it does take quiet some time to complete if you're playing on extreme.
Consider that the game was half the price (or less now) then most games anyway, it's a bargain.

L4D was sold on the (either implicit or explicit, can't remember) promise of much more content. The original game was very replayable, but sorely lacking in content. They've slightly made up for this with recent updates, but still hardly what was originally envisioned.
Having said that I got a fair few hours out of L4D1 and will likely purchase L4D2. Though, I will be looking at it a lot more closely and perhaps won't purchase it straight away as I did with L4D1. When you compare the support TF2 has received to L4D1 and the comparitive prices either TF2 looks like the deal of the century or L4D1 looks like a (little bit) of a rip off. And unfortunately when you become a reputable company like Valve with a track record of making good games, your consumers tend to expect a little more than they do from other companies. So I understand completely where the sentiment behind the petition is coming from.
But as we all know, online petitions are retarded. If you've got your panties that far in a twist from the announcement of a new video game... you're doing it wrong. Vote with your wallet if it's that important.

they've already said they'll continue updating L4D1 despite the looming release of L4D2. they're even going so far as to setup shit to allow custom maps to work on BOTH GAMES. not many game companies have/would allow for that in their titles.
i maintain that the petitioners need a big fat QQ.

And as long they deliver on those promises i'm sure it will address a lot of people's concerns. I have a lot of faith in Valve, they've given me countless hours of entertainment over the years. But surely you can understand why some (admittedly overly whiney) people have reservations about a company seeking to allay concerns about what many view as a broken promise with another promise.

The only problem with comparing L4D and TF2, is TF2 had a massive cult following with rabid fans frothing at the mouth for decades, for the latest installment.
