Expect some bad dialogue, expect a cliche plot and even more cliches buried within, expect a strangely sub-par score, expect some shallow, stereotypical character portrayals...
But also expect one of the most amazing cinematic experiences created to date.
I've just gotten back from the cinema, and have ordered a 120Hz LCD and Nvidia 3D glasses in light of it. Seeing a movie like "Up!" in 3D is one thing - seeing a full blown live-action, action sci-fi like this is another matter entirely.
Thought the movie was fantastic! Loved the plot, the story line could of needed a bit of work but overall it was a f***en sweet movie. Going in again today to watch it again.
Loved the fluid CG and facial + body animation. Really felt like you could could reach out your hand and touch the 3D effects in-front of you. Just mind blowing and awsome in every respect.
Avatar was Absolutely the best movie i have ever seen. and the way they have created the 3D effects not to make things jump out at you but to have a full effect of depth perception in film was jawsome. and to think the creator of that movie had the idea to create it 15 years ago but had to wait for technology to advance before he could make his story come to life.
i think also cause with the 3D effect they use, the image is layered making it seem more detailed as apposed to a normal cinema film.
Everything was average to bad except for the technology. Unfortunately, the technology that is now unique to this movie will not distinguish it for very long as others adopt it into the future.
I thought it was pretty damn good. Was annoying that i had to hold my head still and straight on (no slouching and lounging about) to watch it or lose the efect, but overall very good.
Not sure if its ready for every movie just yet, but feature films could look good ;)

I have *never* seen a movie there that hasn't suffered from some technical glitch. in this film's instance almost the entire left channel audio was gone. "experience the difference" ... fuckers.
but yeah, good movie. well told and acted (despite uber green screenage). AND they managed to avoid a friggin salute at the end.
saw it loved it... only bad thing was the whole of thailand decided they wanted to see it on the same day as me and i had to sit at the front. also it had thai subtitles which was fine but when it came to the "alien" language part there werent any english subtitles....
Not sure of it was the glasses, my shortsightedness or a combo of vertigo and alcohol, but if it tilted my head off centre when watching the movie the depth perception element was totally lost.
no its not just you eater, i lost the effect a few times whilst watching the movie. i had to wear the 3d glasses over the top of my reading glasses. without my glasses on everything was just blurry, even though i dont need my glasses to watch normal movies.
Well I just wore the glasses over my reading ones, no real problems at all.
I did find once in a while the depth perception in the corners was off, and my friends who saw it with me who don't have reading glasses found the same thing. But it wasn't really much of an issue, I am unsure whether or not it was the cinema or not.
As for the movie, it was the usual James Cameron stuff... there was no twist or turn in the story and everything you expected happened in the end. This wasn't a bad thing however. I guess this was his 3D titanic, as I reckon any other director/editor might have diced down the film 30 - 45 mins off the total time, I guess when you don't have much going on in the middle it was hard for him to choose any to cut. Maybe they spent to much time rendering it and making it no one wanted their stuff cut :P
On the positive side, this was the most visually appealing CGI movie I have ever seen. In 3D, when they topple the tree and you sit back in your chair and watch it burn on the big screen, my god that looked amazing... and I found the docco style of "personal notes" a nice way to show how the main character was slowly losing himself in a world he never thought of.
But is this the future of movies? I have no idea, I tried to think of a non CGI movie to compare it to and I guess "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" came to mind. This is an old movie where again the story is quite predictable, all the scenery is visually appealing and the movie is quite long. I would rate this movie a high 5 stars. When it comes to Avatar I feel it was missing something and I would only rate it an above average 4 stars.

The ones you get at the cinema are circularly polarised one way on one eye, and one way on the other. There is a "thingy" in front of the cinema camera that flicks the polarisation several times a second to give each eye its specific image.
With the Nvidia glasses, the actual glasses do the flickering for each eye's image.
So the cinema glasses don't work for the PC 3D stuff.
Make sense? I think that's essentially how it works anyway.

Psyave; the Nvidia ones are "shutter glasses". If you put them on and look at a white wall, you'll notice that a strange greenish yellowish tinge, very light, will move from left eye to right eye.
so to play games in 3d do you need the special glasses and a new monitor or will it work with any monitor? is there any chance you can do a write up on these rec... ie. what you like/dont like comfort, game compatibility and all that jazz?!?
