my g5 is finally starting to give up so i am looking at getting a new mouse, i think i am ready to let go of wires :D
what should i get?
I play mostly FPS games

If you liked the G5, and didn't notice any negative acceleration, then you can't really go past the G500.
My advice would be to steer clear of Razer range entirely. I've used and reviewed half a dozen of their mice, and not once have I been impressed. If you want something more low-profile than the G5, go the Logitech G9X.
However, for utmost precision, I'd recommend you pick yourself up an MX518. Dirt cheap, no acceleration quirks, same great shape. As far as tracking engine is concerned, it's still better than anything that has been released to date (technically just behind the MX500/510 engine which had a fixed 400dpi, but can't be bought anymore).

Totally, insid. Although the legit Logitech skates are some of the best you can find. I've used some good replacements, but they're never quite the same.
I like the MX518. Am considering a new mouse though. The new Logitech one looks good. G something. *shrugs*
i love my G9 - perfect for sledgehammering the shit out of people :D
Personally I like the MS sidewinder. They have a nice chunky mouse wheel, but they are on the large side and not for everyone.
Don't play heavy FPS anymore so can't comment on responsiveness.
You could always wait for: that new Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T. Mouse :D
I recently purchased the G9x and have no complaints. Great streamlined and well weighted design.
Have a look at gotgames and see what the mob over there use. They are all wannabe fps pro gamers so their bound to give you a decent review about a mouse.

G7 was no good. Could feel the wireless delay. That paired with laser negative acceleration and you had a bloody annoying experience.

Got me a G500, upgraded from my old G5. More than happy with it, looks good, feels good, performs good and has 6 programmable buttons for games :D

There has been a few times ive felt a delay and that was with the back button, but wtf is laser negative acceleration?

Negative acceleration is the opposite of your typical mouse acceleration - and in this case it's a hardware problem. What it means is that the faster you move the mouse, the slower the response is on-screen - this is opposed to the faster you move it the greater distance the cursor travels (with the acceleration most are aware of in the windows/games settings).
In an ideal world you want 1:1 movement. To test this, create a large surface area on your desk, draw two dots as far apart as possible. Put your mouse on 1 dot, and mark your screen where the cursor sits. Then slide your mouse to the second dot and mark the screen. Now move your mouse at back and forth between them, varying the speed of your movement each time. Your cursor should always wind up back on those same screen marks regardless of speed. But that will never happen with any type of acceleration.
They're both awful, and what this ultimately means is that your cursor (or crosshair) is not going to be precisely where you wanted or expected. It's a laser-wide issue, seen in all past and current laser mice - cabled or wireless. But the wireless delay on top of that makes it a throw-away, in my books. For the casual gamer, they might not even notice these issues - so if they're happy with it, that's all that really matters.
Oh, and it's not about being afraid to let go of the cable, it's an outright refusal to let go - simply because wireless is still not as responsive as devices with a cable. Insid's zing stands. ;)

If you aren't a wireless whiner (like rec :p) then I suggest taking a look at THIS. Logitech M950, can be had from MSY for "30, picked one up the other day to replace my MX620 Wireless as it developed the double click issue and couldn't be happier.

Thought I'd revive this after a chat today.
One of the guys I work with is in the number one CS:S team in Australia. He's competed in the world cyber games, etc.
He says he has NEVER met a pro gamer that uses a laser mouse. They're optical all the way.
I think he uses the Razer DeathAdder. It's a Razer mouse at least. Can't recall exactly.

Yeh optical all the way! Razer are damn good gaming mouses that have great feel and response but to me they have questionable build quality, when I was heavily into css I had 3 die on me in the one year and my mate had 2 die, since then I've had a 518 for about 2 years and it hasn't had one problem :D

rec just has something stuck up his arsehole.... I have tried everything from the MX510 518 520 G5 and G7, and as far as I am concerned the Razer DeathAdder is a better feel for me.

Not at all.
Razer rose to popularity thanks to its original Boomslang ball mouse, and was particularly popular with Quakers. It was one of the first mice targetted fiercely at gamers, amidst a niche market of competitors such as the Logitech Wingman.
"THE" mouse during that period for "professional" gamers for many years was the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 and the Logitech MX500, in the face of highly marketed gamer peripherals.
I should probably mention current mouse choices, too. Stvroski from Archaic MSI Esports (one of Australia's best CSS teams) still uses a Microsoft 3.0 - and he's not alone. Spun from Immunity uses a Logitech G1 (same era/tech as MX500). Many other players in top CSS clans still use Microsoft 1.1a's as well, such as Yukizor from Sublime.
The point is that even with Razer being a huge brand now (due only to excellent marketing and massive games industry growth), alternatives remain the best choices. The Steelseries Xai is probably the most used mouse among top-tier CS players at present, locally and around the world. It's shaped almost identically to the modest Microsoft 1.1a and has a laser that actually works with a minimal amount of acceleration (much better than most laser mice). If anyone is going to buy a new laser mouse, that's one that should be strongly considered.
I've actually been thinking about making the switch, finally, from my collection of MX510's to that. And I think this conversation has got me excited enough to actually order an Xai. Review up later.
Actually, won't bother. There's still no real accuracy or tracking benefit over the MX510 with low sensitivities, and the negative acceleration is more pronounced at those low sensitivities with many surfaces. There are extremely few mice that have no positive or negative acceleration (Razer DeathAdder 3G, Logitech MX510/518), and for me that's crucial. I'll continue to stick with old faithful.
Heh - I've been using the Dell mouse that came with my PC 2.5yrs ago :p

i've got a g9x, g500, and a mx518.
i like the g500 due to the texture
the mx518 is good and cheap to buy but slippery plastic
I find that the G500 texture is more slippery, as is that second attachable grip for the G9; a smaller surface contact area means less grip.
The only time I find the 518's surface slippery is if you're sweating (eg. Darwin).
I've really enjoyed the mx518 but I think I'm going back to the deathadder, I ran from razer cause of their early deaths but their feel is so nice

Just got my MSIE3.0 for work and it's still awesome as it was years ago when rec had 'that' haircut.
The buttons have just enough give and resistance, and most importantly the mouse is the right size and shape. At home I still can't go past the mx518. In optical mice I've previously owned a g5 (which is now dead), g500, a few MSIE1.1's, Logitech iFeel Mouseman, more mx500s, an mx revolution and that really really massive original corded MSIE mouse.
With the wonders of a large city, you're able to check out a lot of mice on display in person. I've checked out all the current Razer mice and their build/quality just seems quite poor and shape just all wrong for me. Even the texturing on them you can scrape off with fingernail 'accidentally'.
Manufacturers also seem to be making mice smaller and smaller these days too, which is quite annoying.
And I just noticed that there's a slight curve in the two top main buttons, was that always there? Because that's awesome.
