thought maybe it was a bit of a middle of the range spectrum spec, you wouldnt bring in a phone to the country that didnt work on the number one carrier would you?

telstra use 3G 2100 also, use doesn't have the same coverage as 3g850(nextg). The 3g850 coverage was built off the Telstra CDMA backbone because it meant they didn't need to replace all the transmit hardware. Most of the rest of the world uses 3g2100 because they still use their 850 spectrum for standard GSM, in the US they are backfilling the areas that use 850(mostly rural) with 1900(almost all city signal was 1900) and 2100. Similar situation in Europe.
So basicly they are providing a phone that works with the major providers around the world except for one in what is relatively speaking a small market.
Or they could have just made the phone more expensive for everybody.
Chances are what will end up happening is they will release a "nextG" edition if Telstra ask for it.
Why did teltra choose 850 for CDMA. My guess is a) they needed the lower frequency for the coverage advantage in rural areas and b)they where doing an overlay build on top of the existing 900GSM network didn't want to hit bandwidth limits on their 900 allocations.
Long and short of it we have NextG because Telstra wanted to save money on their 3g role out.

i will ad a few things tho.
850 was earmarked for rural use around the world long before Telstra rolled it out, as a lot of carriers already "own" the range
Telstra was the first to deploy wcdma850 but now it is fast becoming the go to band once you leave the city areas because of the better coverage at lower frequencies
very little physical equipment was used from the CDMA but the the actual transmision (backhaul) was added to and re used
they may hold out for a Telstra request but i would expect one is already on the way maybe not approved by Telstra yet (they have a tradition of doing that), as you say the Telstra market is small by world standards, but the 850 market around the world is quite large and continuing to grow.

This has been my next phone purchase since the new year. I don't mind waiting because I'm not out of contract until april. I do mind the old version of android though. Hopefully s-e come good and give it a scheduled upgrade to v2 soon after release though.

If Sony Ericsson sticks along the same lines as before, everyone else gets a "X10" and we should get an "X10a" that will support 850 band

X10 mini and mini pro seem to have NextG support specified on the S-E web site but not the vanilla X10. There was reference to it on S-E's web page defining that NAM (== AT&T) and AUS (==Telstra) were the only places getting a hsdpa 850 phone but the page has since gone MIA.

yeah, the version of android they've used doesnt support it - think the original article mentioned that. not an issue for me, never had much use for that - i just want a decent onscreen keyboard

The xperia x10 is getting a massive patch in the next few days that includes an upgrade to the underlying Android OS

I don't have one - considering it though, but i want to see how this update goes. reviews of teh handset have mentioned occasional lag in the UI plus missed characters when typing texts. If those two probs are solved by the update I'll be grabbing one when my current mobile plan expires in february - the same reviews have said aside from those problems, it's an exceptional phone, and the SE custom UI on top of Android is really good.

Im planing to change from optus to Three and Three have a contract where i can have this phone for additional $20 a month with its contract.

Don't worry about it being a touch screen phone. This one has a capactive touch screen (same kind used in iphones) and is extremely responsive and accurate.
Another phone to consider is the HTC Desire free with 24 months $79 cap contract .

Im fairly new to touch phones. To me they seem to rape the battery life and are fragile.
Im a fairly active person in regards im always moving, running , having my phone is my pocket etc. I look for durability than functionality. So is this phone worth getting still?

most smart phones have rugged pouches you can buy for them. should protect it from most of your parkour activities ;P
but i want you to buy it so you can tell me if it's worth getting in feb when i can upgrade :D

Just a lil update. The Xperia X10 series has been finally upgraded to Andriod 2.1. It will take some weeks before some regions and carriers get theres but they will eventually get the update

you can, but dont you lose the software the manufacturer supplied then? (i know nothing of phone rooting) one of the x10's selling points is the new version of the timescape and mediascape stuff.

Well nobody has been able to properly root it cos of security measures. but theres rumors people have been able to do it on the XDA forums but theres a chance you can brick your phone.
Plus stock andriod is deeply modified for the xperia x10 cos SE want to all cool and all.

You can but the whole point of rooting is that you remove the bloatware and apply a custom rom - generally featuring the best or most useful apps and software.
By that line of thinking, you would assume that a rom for the Xperia would have the timescape and mediascape software in it; the point of rooting is not to blank the phone and remove all software.
Basically, a rom would have any useful or decent software in it, especially if it enhances the user experience with the device.
This is true of the HTC Desire, which to date is the only device I have used the rooting process on.

They're all going to do that I reckon. Similar to what they did with Windows Mobile. Basically if you want the new version of the OS, you must buy a new phone.
My theory is that they do this to not only make the noobs buy new phones, but also encourage the modding community. After all, where will they get all their "ideas" from?

Its actually released now.
So far so gooood. Was a bit sluggish at first after the update but a simple reboot fixed that.
The applications list isnt verticle scroll anymore, its basicly set like the home screen.

lots of nice changes - updated mine when i got home after DGA. Tried to do my wife's phone to but it appears hers has Austar Mobile rubbish holding it up.
incidentally, when her handset arrived originally, it had shipped with 1.6. She really liked the curved unlock thing instead of the newer straight line. Any idea if there's any apps out there to reimplement that? (and i dont mean like using the lock pattern)

Yeah i know what you mean about the curved padlock drag. I think it was a triangle shape from memory. anyways Surely their would be some custom gui/themes that can do that.
If you want to update your wife's phone, flash the os to a generic AU os then open up the SE update tool and it should update. btw if you do flash it you will lose apps that are provided by the phone provider (eg; Optus phone loses optus zoo icons, optus customization etc)

so SE struck again - noticed the update request the other day and sure enough, 2.3 is now on the Xperia. Really loving how SE has clearly learnt a lot from their Android offerings. I honestly cannot fault the company at this stage - sure it took a little while, but each update has arrived faster than the previous one, closing the gap with other manufacturers.

I got the update about 2 months ago, it's a lot better than before but I have found some faults with it but only cuz I'm now thinking of upgrading.
One frustrating thing for me is unlike previous firmware updates when you have an app that force shuts programs they stay shut, leave my phone to idle for about 15min and they start opening back up again in the background. Though truth could be something else else happening on my phone to have this happen but then again I'm prollly just looking for excuses to upgrade atm lol.
