What exactly does 'priority' do in processes? I used to use the 'Low' setting if i was compiling maps while at the computer doign stuff, so i take it is relative to the overall system usage. I was wondering how this would effect HL if i started running it in 'High' instead of 'Normal'. Any differences?

Its do with how program threads are treated.
given x amount of available processor 'time', it allocates slices to threads depending on their priority, eg, if all threads are medium priority, they all (in theory) receive equal time, but a low priority thread may have its timeshare reduced to service a high priority thread.
etc.

if a program requests processor time, the higher the priority, the more the cpu will actually GIVE processor time.
For example an IDLE priority process would get 100 percent of CPU if it wasnt doing anything else, but if a "normal" process requests any time at all, even though the IDLE process "COULD" use all the cpu time, the normal process would get it...
its not the size of the timeslice, its how important it is for that program to GET that timeslice.
Putting a game at high probably wont do much at all.
try it though.
