Server Query Word of Warning

Just a little advise.

Tonight I was monitoring my adsl performance and noticed while my friend was playing CS on my small lan that my downloads were going out of control.

Normally CS uses up to 2.5k/s down and up to 2k/s up. Well mine was doing 20k/s down.

So I inspected my machine. Nothing

I inspected other machine nothing really expect Server Query that was running in the sys tray.

So we shut it down and bam, downloading ceased.

So I started it again and yep up the downloads went. After he got it to close automatically after connecting to the game the downloads became normal.

So if you use this program to connect to online games I recommend making it close apon connecting to the game so it doesnt ping servers in the background.

Standard fare for 56K users Raker. You may not have noticed with your FAT JUICEY ADSL but for us poor 56K users we are scraping for every ms we can get so all the extra programs that suck up our meagre portion of bandwidth get the chop. :D

Good spot their Keith never noticed it myself

Thanks Crazy,

It it was a kick in the guts when I saw what was happening.

Reason mainly is my AUP was getting used up heaps and I was only playing games online and normally it doesnt hike up that fast.

Plus it may help for improving pings.

Thanks

It doesnt help improve pings :( been running this way for a while now, and you guys see me on same ping as every other darwin adsl person

Post 11

actually when it refershes it pings other servers in your list...may cause a slight ping increase..sort of like surfing but on a small scale..

It was my using his internet. I run server query and I had latest version, all default settings that was running it up

I have changed settings to quit on connection to server now!

Post 13

Raker,

There is a setting in the config of server query that stops that.

Actually there are 2

The first quits SQ after launching , good for dsl'ers but not so good for 56K'ers when you are trying to get the last spot on the server.

The second clearly says to stop refreshing servers once launched.

The second is default isn't it?? in SQ, wouldn't make any sense otherwise.

Unless you have upgraded SQ to a weird version someone's been playing with your settings buddy.. [Blocked image]
