My LAN card seems to be acting up. The card is a Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC, and 90% of the time it works fine. But sometimes, seemingly completely at random, it decides to cripple itself and I have to reinstall windows (Win 98 second ed). Nothing short of that fixes it, not even reloading the drivers from the Windows CD (It's a default Windows card). I'll give an example; I was at a small LAN over the weekend, and my pings in CS were normal (10-18) and yet it took 10 minutes to copy the CS 1.4->1.5 updater and HL update over the network. Activity at that time was minimal; no-one else was playing anything, except one computer using a net connection through that network, and there were only six computers plugged into a 100mb switch so congestion wasn't the problem. Pings in CS are normal, but in Starcraft (which uses IPX) are horrible (300 odd). Games in Warcraft II (Also using IPX) are fine. Uploading and downloading files over a network are horrible (as I said, ten minutes to copy like tiny files).
What could possibly be wrong? It's like it's got selective hearing or something.
P.S. This card was doing it on my previous computer (different mobo, copy of windows, different EVERYTHING except card) so it must be the card.
Quote from Kitsume: windows (Win 98 second ed). I think I found the problem. Also maybe the cable as said above. Buy an AMD or Intel network card next time.
A friend's got the same card and it does the same thing - every so often it stops working and kick's the sound card off.
we usually have to move it around slots until it's comfortable back in it's own again :shrugs:
advice: 1 remove network card 2 break network card in half 3 buy new network card such as d-link or intel 4 plug in new network card and enjoy LANning 5 burn realtek network card 6 inciner..... er yeah :)
Could also be IRQ. I once had a shared IRQ with my Network card and my Voodoo5 PCI. To cut a long story shot it was really bad. Try re-arranging them. (I accept no responsibility for anything else that buggers up :D )
