They should be spending more time developing ways to speed up the comp, make it run stable, miniaturize it, add new features ect instead of dreaming up ways to sponge more money out of people.

All hail open source. Linux for all. Or at least cheap software that you can allow any number of PC's to use. The people that run Mandrake have the right idea. Allow anyone to have it for nothing, and suggest that to keep it going, people subscribe to a service (a subscription fee each year to get updates and other cheap/free software)

Thats actually what I'm most afraid of. I didn't switch to Linux just to be forced back to Windows.

Of course, it can apparently be disabled, you just can't view protected content (of course, that is not assured, given the ingenuity of computings 'dark side' I'm sure there will be a way).

Palladium will ship with "Longhorn" , the next version of Windows which they plan to ship in 2004 (some predict it may end up being around 2006/07 that it really comes in).

And it looks like their sneaking it into PCs already. I already pointed out the little 'addition' that was made to the EULA of the latest update for Windows Media Player.

They're trying to sneak it in. And so far their succeeding.

Of course, if they do succeed - I'll go buy myself a SPARC, There is no way I'm letting my freedom be taken away.

This has been coming for ages. I have heard that it can be hacked for the average computer nerd. Anyway its simple, the public will not allow crap like this to happen. Everyone will stick with Win2K or WinXP. Others will use Linux or Lindows and some may switch to Mac. If the gaming community switches to Linux then so will the games developers. There is no money in making games for customers that dont run the OS its designed for. Take Warcraft III for example its a DX8 game, but it will run on Mac OS as it is a hybrid CD. Couldnt that be easily converted to Linux?

After reading that article i allmost loughed my liveing head off!

It does sound scary, and it does consurn myself and other computer geeks :). But the true fact is, that people will soon learn about this new technology, and they will turn away from it. Some people may love this new idea of this chip, but i think most will learn about its down side pretty quick.

People are people, no changing that. I know for a fact that i wont buy any computer system that comes with this SPECIAL chip, and i think most will too. Overall, some companys will go with this new technology and some wont. But i can say that the ones that dont will be making a large amount of profits if they do.

Well, if the discussions on the wine-devel mailing list are any indication, then Warcraft 3 will run under Wine, there is an issue playing the opening movie but if you rename the movies folder it isn't played. (The wine developers are also trying to fix the issue - that is a workaround until then)

That still leaves the question as to why they added those extra lines to their Windows Media Player EULA allowing them to install DRM components on your machine unanswered.
