Serial ATA motherboards are now out and it's about time! So far I have only found the Abit IT7-MAX2 and Shuttle AS45 V1.2, but the Asus P4S8X , A7V8X and A7N8X and Soyo SY-P4I-845E boards are not far off either. They are based on the Intel 845E, SiS 648, VIA KT400 and an nVidia thing that should be available around August.
Seagate is supposably releasing a Serial ATA HDD in the Fall (US), so that won't be far off and others should follow soon, yay. 150MB/s Serial ATA (ATA150?) is so much better than the theoretical ATA 133 speed  . The Serial cables are also longer and thinner than Parallel ATA cables.
Also 8xAGP is becoming the standard on many new boards so that's another reason to upgrade (not that I currently use 4x anyway), but I can't get over how motherboard manufactures only supply three dimm slots!

That SOYO board is for the P4 unfortunately, although I found some news about a Tualatin board called the SY-7VEF. They didnt say whether it had Serial ATA or not but its still SOYO :)

3 slots, 3 gig RAM, give me one good reason you want more than that in your desktop?

OK heres an example:

You have 768 MB and u want another 256 MB stick to make 1 GB. You cant cos they were too dumb to put a forth slot :)

Post 5

that's a chain argument. why stop at four. you have 1gb and want to add another 256 to make 1 1/4 gb, but you can't, because they were too dumb to add a fifth slot. (i used to think 4 slot boards were the only i'd ever buy, but i can easily live with 3 slots) upgrading any sort of storage (ram or disk) almost always requires you sacrifice something you already have, oh well.

Post 6

OK then, say you can afford 4 sticks of 256MB but not 2 of 512MB (and yes i know its onlya small difference, but if you really need it and dont have the extra "0-20)

Post 7

buy a 512 and a 256, because there aint much diff between 768 and 1024mb of ram either. oh, and buy a pizza with the change.

Post 8

512Mb sticks are too expensive and not many shops have the specific brands/models you want (eg cas 2 :D ). That's why Rambus is good for being dual channel, either the board has two simms or four. Obviously two is out of the question.
Oh and paladin I won't use multiple ram sizes as they can make your system unstable. I found that out the hard way. I also heard that from many other people and memory companies so it's not a good idea. You said that 768 is all the ram you need, yeah that's what everybody told me a while ago about not needing anything more than 256! It all depends on what you're doing with it.

Hey Martok, the P4 1.6A isn't so bad when it can overclocked to 2.53GHz with only a 0.2v increase and the PCI and AGP busses are still at default using the default HS.

Ive had a 256, 128, 64, 32 mb sdram all on my motherboard at one time. No stability probs here. Actually i use that mashine as a server and it runs all the time :)
