Need some info and ideas on a cooling system for a 1.8XP GF4 64MB DDR MX440 Soltek SL-75DRV5 Purple Ray system

Current cpu heatsink and fan is made by Just Cooler
Specks are roughly an 80mm Fan spining at around 3120rpm (Might need to update bios for more accurate reading) on a quite large purple heatsink about 90mm square in diamiter and about 35mm in hight.
The cpu is sitting at around 40-55 deg cel but the ABS II CPU Protection kicks in at around 65-70 and restart the system to save the cpu, now the chip melts at around 75+ as most of you know so you see my problem.

The Temperature Sensor Cable that comes with the board I've places on the back side of the G4 card behind the G4 chipset and it sits at about 25-30 deg cel. The cooling fan on the G4 is simalar to the Termalteck ones in desighn although im certen its only a clone.

Moneys not a problem for the cooling system, But I dont want something to crazy. Any ideas would be helpfull.

If it helps the Box has 2 80mm Fan "Chassie Mounted" that spin at around 3500-4300rpm and an 120m fan that has yet to be placed.

Cheers

It just so happens I'm about to sell my HHC-001 heatsink - here's a link so you can compare figures, but basically this is one kick-ass cooler, and it is one of the easiest HSF's I've ever had to install/remove.

http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm#hhc001

If you're interested, let me know. They retail at $80 - "00, mine's about 4 months old, and I'd like to sell it for $50.

This is the current cooler, just found it in that sight xaine85, thanks for the offer man but ill wait to see what every one ells says first, don't wanna rush into anything. I want to do this once and once only but dont sell your Heatsink and Fan yet I'm interested.

The review on the just cooler 80mm fan on the url you posted was pritty dismal.

If you have a fan in the back then try turning the fan on the heatsink upside down, as it is the fan on the CPU might be fighting with the fan you have exhausting hot air from the back of the case. This happened to my brothers computer and he switched it around and got better airflow over the heatsink and through his case.

Otherwise you could get a Volcano 7, 7+ or 9. I know many ppl with the Volcano 7 and it seems to work really well on XP1900 and 1800 and especially well on my brothers Athlon

Post 5

The fan on my Volcano 6Cu+ is a 7000rpm model, blowing onto the aluminium/copper-cored heatsink. So it doesn't fight with the case fans.

Anyway, with my Athlon XP 2200+, I usually get temps of 10-12 degrees above case temp (which is usually around 34 degrees).

Oh, I'm also using Arctic Silver III.

So, my recommendation is, whatever HSF you get, make sure it blows onto the heatsink, and use Arctic Silver III.

I wouldn't suggest turning the fan around on a HSF other than the way it was facing when you bought it. Mainly because the fan would have been pointing in that direction for a reason, the HSF would have been designed to operate with the fan either blowing onto the HSF, sucking from the HSF, or any other strange and wonderful way.

Post 7

Oh yeah Rent check out PCCaseGear (http://www.pccasegear.com) they've got the HHC-001 and HHC-L61 which is the quiet version I've ordered and should arrive tomorrow. They have a few in detail links to the coolers also.

You don't really need awesome 'I've got 30c temp all the through' type cooling, you just need enough to keep your system relatively cool that is unless you're overclocking where cooling is essential.

Post 8

Just to help explain why shouldn't have your fans on backwards sucking from the Heatsink.

You'll notice when it is blowing that flow of air is specifically directed at the 'hot spot' at where the CPU is located and because of the direction of the blowing air there is a greater amount of airflow over this hotspot.

When sucking from a heatsink where the cooler wasn't designed to have the fan pointing in that direction you'll notice that there is a low-pressure spot where there isn't much airflow. So the cooling is not as effective. The hot air basically isn't getting blown away from the bit that's meant to be cooled. There are coolers that suck from, but they tend to have a different design where the airflow is more directed and causes more turbulence around the hotspot of the CPU.

Actually, I stand with Jay on that one.... Try and BUY a HSF which blows air onto the heatsink, don't go juggling around the fan... When it comes to heatsinks, it's not worth it to bugger around, really.

Jay: Nice diagram

Actually if the case fan in the back is blowing out like it should then yes it will fight for the air as it is basically 2 fans pulling in different directions from the same place. If the fan is fighting for air then you wont get enough air on the heatsink so better to have more air flow over the wrong area than not enough at all

Switch it around so its sucking cool air over the heatsink and out towards the exhaust fan

MARTOK, the case fans pose no problem to the cpu fan as I have a Full tower chassie and Jay I don't care about noise, any one who remembers my 500mhz Athlon can tell by the 2 40mm Globle Win fans, they both spin at around 8000rpm rattled the entire case and kept the old beast at around 30-45 deg under full load.

xaine85 why are you getting rid of your CPU Cooler, I wouldent mind taking it of your hands as I've read there reviews and there one of the best coolers out there due to the low boiling point coolent that transfers heat thew the copper pipes that run threw the heatsink like an exhaust manifold.
[Image: http://www.dansdata.com/images/coolercomp/cmhhc001440.jpg]

All I'm after is a stable system temp who cairs about noise, cooling is everything, even if you don't plan to overclock. Which I don't a 1.8 with a GF4 its a big improvement form a 500 with a GF2.

And what about video cooling I'd like to get better cooling for the Geforce 4 aswell.

What are your views on that?
Steve what cooling did you slam onto your vid card, you had a crazy setup for awhile there, around DGA3-4 if I remeber (so long ago)

Dont realy wanna spend more then around "50 on cooling for the CPU, VIDEO and Motherboard chipset, but will if I have to.

Thats cool just a suggestion as i was not aware of how big your case was :)

Heres some fan/hs combos fairly compact but supposed to be fairly good too (range from $21 to $77)

They also only have one cooler for a gf4 $28
[Image: http://www.below-0.net/images/sm_tt_gf4.jpg]

I personally along with Odyssey have a couple of these on our video cards but they probably wouldnt do enough for a gf4 :)

Rent@kill: selling the cooler because of the tax man. This time of year is upgrade time for me, and I've just splurged on the Thermalright SLK800 (which I've just received - can't wait to get home!) that's going to have an 80mm Sunon 50cfm fan strapped to it (that is, until I get the Thermaltake Smartfan II, @75cfm  in a couple of weeks).

[Edit] - Thanks, Martok - I always get them confused.

Post 14

Thermalright Xaine :)

Thats another suggestion although it is the upper scale its nice and beefy and accomodates multiple size fans :)

Post 15

xaine85 its it a heavy heatsink+fan combo as I don't wanna dammage the core of my cpu whilst travelling to lans and back to darwin when the time comes....
I know its better to have your pc on the side so that your cpu fan is upside down and your hard drives sit sideways so that shock wont dammage the head of the drive or smash teh core on the cpu....
Have you had many problems with it? What cpu is it on now and hows it cope cooling it...

Unless your HDD is damn old then the heads move into a off position (away from the platters) when it powers down and i think he said he just got the heatsink, oh and might be a silly question do u know about shims? cos it wont hurt :)

BTW..The heatsink shouldnt move too much cos it has the wide clip, just unclip the fan when moving it

Post 17

Yeah that may be the case but it is still better for your drive to travle on its side. Ever opend a box of HD? Note that they all travel on there side. Better to be safe then sorry.

I may know a few things but honestly I don't know em all so refresh my mind about shims...

And true, did'nt think about that, but ints gonna be a pain in the as to screw in and unscrew the fan which will drop some copper filings very low risk but Ive seen 1st hand what happens when filings get into electrical gear *sniff sniff*

xaine85
How would you like to go about sending the Heatsink and Fan

A shim is basically a piece of copper about 1-2 mm thick that covers the gap between the heatsink and the CPU so as to prevent the heatsink rolling on the die. And also the fan clips on so no screws, should only take a few seconds on and off :)

Post 19

Ahh Ive seen them, they cover everything but the diod things and the cpu core were would i go about getting one and scroll up I posted a pic of the fan and heatsink with the liquid exhaust type system.
Or are we thinking about Different cooling all togeather?

Post 20

Oh yeah i was talking about the Thermalright cooler that Xaine said about

And shims are probably in every computer store that you could think of (if not then they suck :)). Maximum it would cost is "0, here in Melbourne there about $7. But if you buy stuff online then places like below zero and pccasegear.com will have them

Post 21

Hey Rent,

I finally upgraded to 1900XP on Abit KX7-333R and using Volcano 7+ - adjustable speed ideal for Darwin conditions.

Good to know your still out there mate..

Post 22

Thanks MARTOK just orded one from Below Zero COD.. I wanted to buy everything on the site but err nah dont think the bank would let me

Post 23

lol

Post 24

morbeous ya old basted, how's things treating you
Long time no hear man....

Sounds sweet man. I got a new system of inshurance, cost me $50 so far just orded a shim and plan to get xaine85s Heatsink and Fan.

System Specs are so far:
1800 XP AMD ATHLON
64mb DDR GeForce 4 MX 440
Soltek Purple Ray SL-75DRV5
(Very good revews and gamers I know in the US say there fucken awsome and it has been so far)
256mb DDR RAM
10/100 Surcom Network Adapter
32x12x48x CD Burner
60gig 7200rpm Seagate Baracuda ATA 133 IV

Did a timedemo in Q3A at 1024x768 @ 32bit Everything on pulled 170fps With the lattest Detonator Drivers
And for 50 bucks well

If I can make some extra cash I might be back in the NT for X-MAS
Still worken on the Torana its getten painted Lime Green with GTR (NOT XU-1) Stripes.
Thinking about dumping a 265 Hemmi into it but will see. Got offord 5500 for the worked 202 thats in there atm but I'm Kinda attached to the old clunker. Ill catch up with you on icq Man.
And I've alway been out there, just with limmited net access.

Post 25

Rent - are you in Darwin or Perth? If Perth, just PM me your address, and I can send it straight to you courtesy of work 8) (and I'll also reply with banking details).

I've been to about 4 or 5 LAN's since I got the HHC-001 - never had any problems with it coming loose or anything. I always transported my case on the side, but not out of concern of anything coming loose - just didn't want the case to topple over!

I miss the clip on the HHC-001 already - this SLK800 is not coming off ever now! The good thing about it is that if I want to change fans, the fan simply unclips from the top without having to remove the heatsink - just as well.
